A Matter Of Taste., Charles E. Haskins
A Matter Of Taste., Charles E. Haskins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis paper supports the Master of Fine Arts exhibition at the Slocumb Galleries, East Tennessee State University, from March 14th through March 18th, 2011. The exhibit is composed of nine oil paintings depicting an invented story about two characters who create a soup for a cooking competition. The show A Matter of Taste chronicles an allegory concerning the evaluation of creative works. Through Gaudie and Baudie's "odd" recipe this work illustrates the ways in artists and art audiences interact and determine artistic value. The work is inspired by techniques in distortion and narrative painting. The following expands on the …
Confabulation: Photographs, Memory, And Painting, Erin Cunningham
Confabulation: Photographs, Memory, And Painting, Erin Cunningham
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is in regards to paintings created by Erin Cunningham for the completion of her MFA in Visual Arts at Boise State University in the spring of 2011. She primarily discusses the tenuous connection between photography and memory. Examining ideas developed by Roland Barthes, she set out to prove that while there is a distinct difference between the factual language of photography and the fictive language of memory, that the two have a type of symbiotic relationship. Particularly in regards to familial photography, the paintings she has developed from this concept examine the construction of memoir using images that …

A Meditative Art, Lori White
A Meditative Art, Lori White
All Student Theses and Dissertations
My artwork symbolizes the idea of meditation through the true and organic forms. I paint a space where my mind is at ease. A place where all the chaos of the world around me stops and become beauty. In my artwork, the organic forms that I produce reflect the meditative power of natural forms. My mind sees the environment in a simple abstract appearance that mirrors a sense of peace and harmony. By painting with smooth, organic, and soft lines my artwork helps me get to a point of relaxation. Through the process of letting go of the world that …

Peregrinations, Sallie Clinton Poet
Peregrinations, Sallie Clinton Poet
Theses and Dissertations
This project report explains my MFA show of landscapes presented at the Woodbury Museum in Orem, Utah. Referencing source material from my 2008 trip to the Middle East, Bible narratives and contemporary scholars, I created mixed media paintings around the themes of traveling and migrations (peregrinations) and some significant stopping places in Syria, Jordan and Israel. More importantly, this report also speaks to my personal peregrinations as an artist and relates my painting methods to my subject matter.
The Nature Of Making Sense, Allison Alford
The Nature Of Making Sense, Allison Alford
CGU MFA Theses
My interest is to breed the mystical with the mundane, producing informational systems that coalesce knowledge, ambiguity, logic and fantasy. The species that populate my imagery are totems that could function as heroines, monsters or shapes that elude and inform us. The work functions as a stage upon which, pixels, paint and mystical figures coexist. Each panel acts as a composite of multiple frames of a video: figures combine with paintings, drawings, symbols, and landscape. Though ultimately singular in image, the pictures imply multiplicity. The lineage of the work can be traced to influences such as François Dufrêne, Max Ernst’s …
The Observer Effect, Azadeh Tajpour
The Observer Effect, Azadeh Tajpour
CGU MFA Theses
My work explores the gray area and the shifting border between "us" and "other." It investigates the helplessness and the submissiveness on both sides of this spectrum and one's passivity that makes the "pain of others" inevitable. Moreover, it examines the individual and collective experiences of guilt and complicity in relation to world events. I am interested in the selective and repressed memories of individuals and nations, the reluctance to look and the ability to forget.
Gamespace, Kevin M. Scianni
Gamespace, Kevin M. Scianni
CGU MFA Theses
My work uses gameplay, the experience of interacting with a gaming system, as a strategy to generate paintings. I interact with a set of rules, challenges and goals loosely derived from the structure of early videogames as a method to compose a painting. I am interested in how game strategies can address formal aspects of painting. I am also interested in how gameplay as an indicator of game quality or the desire to continually be challenged will continually advance the paintings.

The City With Rolling Hills, Andrew Ballstaedt
CGU MFA Theses
I use painting as a form of ritual and meditation where I often spend lots of time painting and repeating simple marks over and over again. On occasion, I am able to make quick paintings that are successful but most of the time I am compelled to spend repetitive hours making marks in order to reach my state of personal mediation through the ritual of painting. Élan Vital, Sharon Mealey
Élan Vital, Sharon Mealey
CGU MFA Theses
My art explores the inner qualities of life, focusing on adaptability and resiliency. I am interested in the mysterious vital force philosophers call élan vital that animates human beings. I investigate the transitory nature of life where it intersects with élan vital. My paintings accommodate the ephemeral and the perpetual. Examples of the poems and corresponding Pre-Raphaelite depictions include The Eve of Saint Agnes, La Belle Dame Sans Merci and The Lady of Shalott.
Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender
Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender
Art and Design
My senior project consisted of a large series of paintings on canvas. I created seven large scale paintings (36” x 48” size) which involved minimalism, typography, a “painterly” process, and abstraction. It was a series of explorations in working with my own two (physical) hands, rather than working on a computer as is the standard method of working for graphic designers. These paintings were done in hopes that the series would help me further define my artistic style, accumulate a larger body of work, and possibly discover a new form of painting.

Cannibalism: A Failure To Be Satisfied., Richard Brandon Pruett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis supports the Master of Fine Arts exhibition at the Tipton Gallery, East Tennessee State University, from March 23rd through April 3rd, 2009. To comment on the title of my thesis, it describes an invented process created to re-contextualize failed paintings into works that critically comment on the discipline of painting itself. The paper describes and analyzes the conceptual moves created by a refusal to be satisfied with predictable outcomes in my work. At the end of this tumultuous quest to explore what painting is to me, the most rewarding works were a product of a …

Representaciones De Figuras Feministas En La Muestra Despierta!, Kathryn Lane
Pitzer Senior Theses

Mural, Painting And Art Education Project With African Refugees And The African Community Center Of West Michigan, Carrie Schoenborn, Jill Eggers
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
In starting the project at the African Community Center, we spent time getting to know the center, the people who use it and how it is used. We began by simply being at the center and helping with whatever needed to be done. We answered phones, met people who came and cleaned the donation closet. Yaka, the director, brought us to visit many of the families that use the center and we talked to both the refugees and Yaka about the experiences these individuals had coming to the United States; the difficulties they faced in Africa, on their journey to …
And This, Our Measure: Figurative Realism And Workaday Culture., Perry Walter Johnson
And This, Our Measure: Figurative Realism And Workaday Culture., Perry Walter Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Man has created vast and powerful systems. These systems and their associated protocols, dogmas, and conventions tend to limit rather than liberate. Evaluation based on homogeneity threatens the devaluation of our humanity. This paper and the artwork it supports examine contemporary culture and its failings in the stewardship of the humanist ideal.
My paintings referenced herein are satirical narratives. The story told is one of alienation and evisceration. The visual subject matter is the human figure and environments dominated by architectural geometry. The male figures are conspicuously turned from view, a visual cue to their estrangement. Parallel and subordinate thoughts …

Zelotti's Epic Frescoes At Cataio: The Obizzi Saga, Irma Jaffe
Zelotti's Epic Frescoes At Cataio: The Obizzi Saga, Irma Jaffe
Art & Visual Culture
A prominent writer, a master painter, and a treasure of art that for centuries had been largely neglected are brought brilliantly to life in this first important study of one of the great legacies of Renaissance art. The immense castle at Cataio, about thirty-five miles from Venice, was built between 1570 and 1573. An extraordinary series of frescoes, painted in 1573, covers the walls of six of its palatial halls. Programmed by Giuseppe Betussi, the forty frescoes depict momentous events in the history of the Obizzi family from 1004 to 1422. Executed by Giambattista Zelotti and assistants, the frescoes, plus …
