The Rhode Island Training School becomes a home to juvenile offenders of the law.  Home, in so far as it is a place that they sleep, eat, and spend a lot of time in, as well as the atmosphere in which learning and growth occur during the adolescent phase of their lives.  There is a very high rate of released inmates who return to the facility for things like running away from group homes, not checking in with their parole officers, or other misdemeanors.  It is my belief that this is, at least in part, due to the fact that …

Correspondence; financial and legal papers; genealogy and other material related to the Temple family of Warren County, Kentucky, particularly that of Adalaska L. and Mary Camilla (Miller) Temple and their daughter Ruth Hines Temple. This project addresses previously unexplored areas of Victor D'Amico's career as Director of the Education Department at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) from 1937-69, during which time he developed and implemented his philosophy on creative teaching that developed creativity, innovation and appreciation for modern art through a focus on individual aesthetic experience. Beginning with MoMA's early role and mission and the founding of the Education Project, the education programs as a laboratory for experimental art education are studied, specifically the Museum's television series Through the Enchanted Gate and the Children's Art Carnival as exemplars of D'Amico's experimental programming. This thesis presents a qualitative inquiry into how the graphic design process is being reconfigured within the new digital media landscape. The literature review looks at the historical relationship between graphic design and technology from the invention of the printing press to the personal computer and reviews how this relationship is again affected by the emergence of the computer as a medium for communication. The products of digital design are no longer static and fixed but are dynamic and progressive. This research project examines how transitional multiculturalism, cultural hybridity and transformative-repair are practiced by a professional artist-researcher and novice artists. Transitional multiculturalism and cultural hybridity are examined through a series of artworks by a Vietnamese-born artist-researcher. This series of artwork, which reflects 35 years of creating art in both Vietnamese and Australia, demonstrate a personal engagement with issues of cultural diversity, upbringing, and related aesthetic studies. This thesis describes two lithographic techniques that may be used to introduce black and white lithography to beginning art students. Aluminum plate and paper lithography are two relatively low cost and safe lithographic methods suitable for schools with limited budgets and limited space.

It is recommended that the instructor interested in teaching the two processes described in this thesis have some previous experience in lithography.

This thesis presents the results of a longitudinal study of a painting class for a group of mentally and physically handicapped young adults. The author's observational journal and the students' paintings provided the basis of the thesis.

The author gave maximum freedom to her students and the students fully exercised creativity through their painting activity. This experience brought a new identity to the group. The students evolved from a collection of separate people into a cohesive social unit.

A Language Arts Project Involving The Construction Of A Solar Greenhouse By Navajo Children, Daniel J. Mclaughlin

This paper, in three parts, explains why and how fifth and sixth grade students at a Navajo bilingual elementary school in New Mexico built a solar greenhouse as a language arts project. The first part catalogues the English speaking, reading, and writing needs of the children. It details the rationale behind building a greenhouse to address these needs. The second part is the greenhouse project itself. It contains English lessons which the students used as guidelines for planning and building the greenhouse structure. The third part, found in the Appendix, contains one of the students' workbooks.
