Almost fifty years after the Apollo 11 mission, the moon landing remains one of humankind’s most remarkable technological achievements. On the lunar surface, the Eagle’s flight crew left behind an American flag, mementos honoring those who lost their lives in the quest for such an achievement, and a plaque reading, “Here men from the planet Earth set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” Despite overwhelming proof of this achievement—radio transmissions, photographs, film, rock and soil samples—a sizable minority of Americans continue to view the Apollo 11 moon landing as a hoax. The Living Chain is a body of work built to apply and analyze mythological narrative and traditional printmaking techniques. The work is a collection of prints telling an original narrative that derives much of its visual and thematic style from the works of the Baroque and Medieval periods, as well as significant influence from the prints of Gustave Doré. The purpose of this paper is to explore the ideas, mythologies, histories, and symbols found in and inspiring the work, in order to better understand the work’s purpose and its technical challenges. Taylor considers the role that book arts may play in Craig’s theories of the new theatre, or the Art of the Future. He expands our understanding of Craig’s design work to include print culture, examining his engravings for the monumental editions of Hamlet published by Count Harry Kessler’s Cranach Press in 1929–30. Taylor explores the relationship of Craig’s designs for the 1912 Moscow Art Theatre production of Hamlet to his engravings for the German and English-language Cranach Press editions of the play. José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913) was one of Mexico’s most influential political printmakers and cartoonists. Posada produced an extensive body of imagery, from illustrations for children’s games to sensationalistic news stories. He is best known, however, for his popular and satirical representations of calaveras (skeletons) in lively guises, who have become associated with the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. Posada’s prints shaped generations of Mexican artists including the muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. The artist references images captured by electron microscope photography of Dopamine, DNA, and the process of Mitosis (specifically occurring in the human body). Through the use of photoshop the artist was able to manipulate the images of Dopamine, DNA, and Mitosis to create low polygonal artwork. The artist created 15,000-30,000 individual triangles, piecing them together using photoshop to create the images that they were referencing. The body is an amazing spectacle rarely looked at from within by artists. Many find beauty on the surface of the body, but when explored further, the body has much more to offer. The artist …

Fireworks For The Emperor. A New Hand-Colored Impression Of Sebald Beham’S “Military Display In Honor Of The Visit Of Emperor Charles V To Munich”, Alison Stewart, Nicole Roberts

A little studied Einblattdruck, or single-sheet woodcut, from the sixteenth century shows early incendiary devices used to honor the entry of the Holy Roman Emperor in 1530. The large woodcut displays the military honors given to the emperor: cannons firing on a castle constructed for the occasion and fireworks. Harnessing the potential of powders for both pyrotechnics and color added by hand to prints was among the many cultural developments of the sixteenth century. This article makes known a recently rediscovered impression of the print, unique with hand coloring, which serves as the focus of discussion for several aspects …

Isabella d'Este's activities as an art collector and patron are richly documented and have received a correspondingly large amount of art historical attention in the modern era. Yet Isabella--and the studiolo she had created and decorated in the Mantuan Palazzo Ducale--have gotten mixed reviews in this scholarship; the former has historically emerged as difficult, irrational, and acquisitive rather than discerning, while the paintings done for the latter by Andrea Mantegna, Perugino, Lorenzo Costa, and Correggio between 1497 and 1530 are often treated as curiosities-stilted in style and didactic in subject-within the larger scope of the artists' careers. Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk

Jerry Bywaters – Lone Star Printmaker chronicles the printmaking career of Texas regionalist artist Jerry Bywaters (1906 – 1989). In 1935, Bywaters began recording the prints he made, primarily lithographs, when he noted ‘“Gargantua” First litho made (1935)’ on the first page of his print notebook. This study is based on that notebook and places Bywaters’s printmaking career within the context of art developments in Dallas through the 1940s. It includes a catalogue of his prints, information regarding the history of each print, and reproductions of his known illustrations and ephemera.
