This thesis is an exploration in painting via approximately one hundred small works in acrylic, gouache, and graphite on paper. The written discussion clarifies my approach to this body of work: how it was conceived, the use of materials, as well as its purpose.

More specifically, I look toward the contemporary proliferation of visual media along with the concept of "art for art's sake" as influences. The paintings in this exhibition are an investigation of the dichotomy between rational and intuitive processes. The scope ranges from a purely historical perspective to include personal history as well. The work references ancient mythologies and the ordering systems that humans have created to explain the world around them as an expression of rational processes. The objects and symbols used derive from my interest in archaeology, mythology, astrology, and astronomy of the ancient world. The Drawing series presented in this thesis exhibition deals with the influence of a mother and child relationship. Beginning with pregnancy and following the physical relationship through the first year, these drawings reflect the changes of the interactions between the mother and the child as well as the mother and her environment.

The imagery is an abstract representation of this relationship. The intuitive process that is used to create this series, relies on formal elements of drawing which only suggest the influence of the mother and child relationship. There is probably little doubt that the fissure between "high" and "low" culture is more conspicuous nowadays than it ever was. Clement Greenberg, that dashing arbiter of contemporary art, had already sensed it in 1939 when he wrote the seminal essay quoted above, as Adorno also perceived it decades before him. Their foreboding premonitions, however, could not hinder the relentless success of popular culture and the retreat of so-called high art into the safe harbors of the university campus, the museum, and the private sphere.

In this installation piece, I am creating an environment, a stage if you will, to inform viewers through visual images, shadows and projections, to bear witness to an injustice through the machinations of the state. Philosophically and metaphorically, the piece is a walk through Plato's cave in search of the truth of things formerly perceived as shadows; it is also an allusion to illusions that are both transparent and opaque. This dissertation takes a primarily art historical approach to the murals commissioned from 1934 to 1943 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. This study is confined to the post office murals created for the Commonwealth of Kentucky under the United states Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. Many of these paintings were lost or deliberately destroyed when the program was dismantled. Today most of the remaining murals are dirty and· faded and little noticed. Many of the artists have been forgotten. During the Depression years, however, these paintings contributed to local pride, optimism for the future, stronger patriotism, and a …

My graduate work, culminating in Spira Mirabilis, my final thesis project, has been about a search for simplicity. What I have discovered along the way is complexity. In searching for a fundamental principle that generates a complex form, I discovered an apparently simple form that is, rather, a consequence of complex relationships. This creative project consists of one complete manuscript for a children's book, intended for young readers (ages 5-8), and twelve possible illustrations created in coordination with the text. The manuscript explores the difference between old age and youth, as it is discovered by a child desiring to spend the day with his grandfather. Page numbers and other notes are included to define how the text would come together to fit publishers' guidelines. 105 college students rated digitized facsimiles of works of art depicting the Virgin Mary, which varied in style (Pre-Renaissance versus Renaissance and Post-Renaissance) and content (depictions of events versus devotional images). Viewer reactions were affected strongly by style, content, and their interaction. For example, the newer style was perceived to have greater power and clarity than the older style, and this effect was greater for event depictions than for devotional images. Other findings included differences in reactions between men and women.

The practice of Systemic Art was first introduced under the pretext of Minimal/Conceptual art processes in the 1960s, which incorporated the presentation of empty gridded armatures and self-referential charts, (termed non-relational arrangement) as a means of democratizing esthetic content. Systemic objects stressed industrial fabrication and materials m their manufacture over traditional notions of individualized craft, with the intent to demystify the role of the artist in the creative process. For those reasons, systemic practice has remained highly influential among artists concerned with the public context of aesthetics, although its recent applications have gravitated towards incorporation of disparate materials and …

Combining The Historical And The Personal In Painting, Christopher A. Shotola-Hardt

This thesis project consists of five large scale, abstract paintings executed on Masonite panels. A major component of these paintings is the heavily built-up surface texture. In order to achieve this heavy, sculptural surface, plaster and acrylic media have been applied in an aggressive, spontaneous manner using variously-sized masonry knives. The paintings are largely action-oriented. They are non-neutral, and they bespeak a great deal of intensity on the part of the artist.

The five paintings contain emotional content based upon personal experiences and family history. In some cases, I began a painting with the subject matter clearly in mind. In …
