Books

The lives of the six men depicted in Edgar Degas' Six Friends at Dieppe - as well as Degas himself - are explored. The history of the painting's placement in the RISD Museum's collection is traced back to Degas' relationship with one of the men featured in the painting. The narrative is interspersed with paintings, photographs, and excerpts from various memoirs, autobiographies and correspondences.

The Effect Of Color On Viewers’ Ratings Of Paintings, Donald J. Polzella, Stephanie H. Hammar, Chad W. Hinkle

Sixty college students rated digitized facsimiles of 20 paintings on 12 semantic differential scales. The paintings represented two classes of content, landscape and portrait, and two styles, traditional and modern. Half the participants viewed the paintings in color, half in black and white. Removing color from portraits increased their perceived pleasantness and beauty and reduced tension. In contrast, removing color from landscapes reduced their perceived beauty. It is argued that for landscapes color may provide a critical channel for transmitting increased amounts of information such as depth. For portraits, color can be superfluous or even distracting.

Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection consists of correspondence, photographs, a scrapbook, clippings, and ephemera related to Marion Vest Fors' murals which were painted in the James E. Morrow Library as part of the centennial celebration of Marshall College. The murals were removed for remodeling circa 1966 and remounted in 2005. The scrapbook was created by Fors about her creation of the mural to justify its emergence from storage and reuse in the Morrow Library. Also included in the collection are paintbrushes used in the painting of the murals.

Those familiar with Salvador Dalí's contradictory nature as well as his propensity to mask his own thoughts will not be surprised to learn that, publicly, he despised music, though obviously that was not the case at all. In fact, many witnesses say – Amanda Lear, for one – he was actually quite musical and, time and again, he could be caught off guard singing or humming Catalan folk songs, sardanas, zarzuelas, and cuplés – all folksy, kitschy, and, by most accounts, tacky popular songs. The Corinthian

The emergence of the so-called "primitive" masking its way into the art world of the twentieth century brought with it an alluring mystique which intrigued numerous artists and consequently provoked its appropriation. Specifically, the tribal can be seen in the works of Pablo Picasso as he imbues the geometric facades of Afro- Iberian masks, with shamanistic powers. Upon comparison, the primal found in Picasso's work adds an interesting twist to the work of the female Dadaist Hannah Hoch, who puzzles her audience both aesthetically and intellectually through her use of dense iconography.

The exhibition, The Brotherhood of Free Culture: Recent Art From St. Petersburg, Russia represents a significant moment in the history of exhibitions of Russian nonconformism in painting. Like all Russian nonconformist art, this exhibition and these artists trace their roots back directly to 1863 and to the tradition of "unofficial" art, which, one might say, began with the refusal of those fourteen artists to remain under the yoke of the academy. The bold move of those young artists in the nineteenth century precipitated the formation of a more permanent group of painters into the Brotherhood of Traveling Art Exhibitions, …
