Cor(E) Brand Direction, Jake T. Tokatlian
Graphic Communication
COR(E) is a new record label founded by an artist named Lil Uzi Vert, and for my project I have taken the initial steps to develop their brand identity and create physical products for the label. To achieve this, I made a brand book to help define COR(E) and provide a set of design guidelines, a Spring issue of a quarterly magazine that provides news and behind the scenes of the label’s artists, and a CD design including a cover and tracklist. I believe there is a gap in the market for bringing physical media into the music industry and …
Clue In The Roman Style House: A Twist On The Classic Board Game Featuring A Fusion Of Ancient And Modern Roman Influences, Madelyn Junk
Clue In The Roman Style House: A Twist On The Classic Board Game Featuring A Fusion Of Ancient And Modern Roman Influences, Madelyn Junk
Honors Projects
Throughout time, games have been used to convey how society functions. They hint at societal structure, behavioral patterns, and roles of community members. Specifically, board games are excellent ways to teach players about attention to detail and how to synthesize information.
This unique and functional honors project finds its strength as a detail-oriented game that stresses the importance of critical thinking and deduction as it further rewards those skills through play and friendly competition. It combines art history, education, and graphic design disciplines to result in a creative output alongside a research paper. Its final product is a playable game …
Listening To The Landscape: Designing A Conversational Agent For Native Botanical Literacy, Lucy Periale
Listening To The Landscape: Designing A Conversational Agent For Native Botanical Literacy, Lucy Periale
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This project investigates how physical devices integrated with conversational AI can support botanical literacy and encourage engagement with the natural world, with a particular focus on increasing awareness of California native plants. It asks: how can tangible, voice-interactive devices facilitate place-based learning without disrupting direct outdoor experience? Existing plant identification tools rely on screen-based interaction, which can distance users from their natural surroundings. This research contributes to interaction design and human-computer interaction discourse by exploring embodied learning through devices that prioritize environmental immersion. This project developed multiple design concepts and developed three prototypes namely Buddy Bot, Radio Agent and Plant …
Design For Future Discourse: Creating The Speculative Design-Inspired Exhibition Modulation: Rewiring The Self, Ryan Bridgforth
Design For Future Discourse: Creating The Speculative Design-Inspired Exhibition Modulation: Rewiring The Self, Ryan Bridgforth
Honors College Theses
Humans have long combined speculation and design. Early examples like General Motors’ Futurama at the 1939 World’s Fair introduced Americans to the idea of expressways and invited them to imagine possible futures. While intriguing, this mix of design and future thinking stood to benefit corporations overall, which is where speculative design comes in. Pioneered by design duo Dunne & Raby, speculative design uses design not as a way to engineer solutions to difficult problems, but “as means to explore the cultural and technological potentials of design, effectively blurring material and conceptual boundaries” (Mitrović et al. 2021, 175). Designing objects or …

Strategic Branding: The Critical Role Of Brand Strategy For Successful Branding Initiatives, Sara Virginia Abell
Senior Honors Theses
In the increasingly saturated world of branding, the ability to rise above the noise and establish meaningful connections with an audience is essential. This thesis explores the relationship between brand strategy development and successful branding outcomes. An initial review of relevant literature is conducted, focusing on the importance and creation of strategy. Further consideration is given to the unique challenges associated with rebranding efforts. The practical impact of brand and rebrand strategies is underscored through case studies across varying contexts. Following this, the implementation of strategy is discussed, with an emphasis on the role of design elements and principles in …

Swarlipi: An Exploration In Devanagari Typography, Hindustani Music, And Emotional Expression, Arya Radhika
Swarlipi: An Exploration In Devanagari Typography, Hindustani Music, And Emotional Expression, Arya Radhika
University Honors Theses
Local Indian scripts are slowly fading in favor of Latin and English due to the idolization and convenience of Western culture in post-colonial India. Unique Indic fonts and quality cultural design work are uncommon. To contribute to a small pool of design that deserves to be much larger, I decided to explore a niche topic--the emotional expression of Indian classical music, in particular the concept of time theory, and how Devanagari lettering can represent the emotions evoked by music.
I conducted surveys and several interviews to understand how typography expresses emotion in terms of technical concepts as well as cultural …
Green Weave: A Textile Guide To The Future Of Fashion, Simon Braunschweig
Green Weave: A Textile Guide To The Future Of Fashion, Simon Braunschweig
University Honors Theses
Fashion and technology are inextricably linked. The more advanced our technology becomes, so too does fashion and our understanding of it. Fashion is also one of the top contributors to climate change. However, modern technology has the potential to change the way fashion impacts our planet, working harmoniously with nature instead of against it. This thesis investigates the connection between technology and fashion, resulting in a handbook for fashion designers who want to implement more sustainable practices into their work with the help of modern technology.
Comfort In Contradiction, Yanchen Zhao
Comfort In Contradiction, Yanchen Zhao
Masters Theses
This research explores why modern visual experiences often feel hollow—why suburban McMansions imitate classical architecture and why luxury spaces feel staged. Instead of simply criticizing these aesthetics, I want to understand them: Why do we embrace symbols disconnected from history? What makes them feel familiar and comforting?
Using Jean Baudrillard’s idea of hyperreality and Marshall Berman’s view on modernity, I examine how today’s aesthetics are simulations—designs that no longer refer to a real past but exist as self-repeating symbols. Everyday objects borrow classical decorations without structural purpose, offering a sense of tradition and familiarity without real historical connection. Modernity, while …
Mindful Symbiotic Ecosystems. Designing For Women In Remote Workspaces, Andrea Guevara Araujo
Mindful Symbiotic Ecosystems. Designing For Women In Remote Workspaces, Andrea Guevara Araujo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Women represent 61% of designers in the workforce but hold only 29% of leadership roles. This disparity highlights a critical need for an ecosystem that removes barriers and cultivates mentorship, community, and leadership among women (Bolt, 2020). Even though women have proven their ability to succeed in male-dominated corporate cultures, the real question is not about capability but sustainability. Driven by overwork, competition, and burnout, the workplace does not just push women out; it leads to long-term instability for the entire organization (Krivkovich et al., 2024). In the workplace, a culture of masculinity reinforces harmful, outdated mindsets and glorifies aggressive, …
Designing For Autonomy: Enhancing The Autonomy Of Young Women With Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (Pots) Through Interactive Narrative, Jessica Gobble
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is an autonomic nervous system disorder with multisystem impacts. Classified as a chronic illness and oftentimes triggered by viral infections, incidents of POTS have become increasingly common following the outbreak of COVID-19. Primarily affecting young women ages 18 to 30, POTS disrupts an individual's health during their transition to adulthood. This issue is further complicated by medical gender bias, latent care, and misdiagnosis, which leave this demographic vulnerable within traditional healthcare systems (Shaw et al., 2019). As traditional healthcare systems primarily address acute rather than chronic conditions, interactions with these systems are intermittent. Consequently, individuals …
Public Comment: Using Critique-Like Mediating Artifacts To Democratize Discourse At City Council Meetings, Piper Schuerman
Public Comment: Using Critique-Like Mediating Artifacts To Democratize Discourse At City Council Meetings, Piper Schuerman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Are local governments designed for equitable citizen participation? While civic engagement aims to empower citizens and support representative governance, barriers to participation can hinder those outcomes. City council meetings, key venues for public input, pose specific challenges such as long durations, dense content, and intimidating formalities. These issues disproportionately affect Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012), who frequently report feeling underinformed or having limited time to engage. This thesis explores how city council meetings might use multimodal mediating artifacts, inspired by design critique practices, to make public discourse more accessible for Gen Z adults.
Grounded in activity theory and …

Graphic Design 101: Creating Conceptual Literature To Aid In Art Education Access And How I Learned From My Experience Creating It, Kylie J. Roark Miss
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this thesis, I will attempt to address several issues that individuals, such as students within the upper middle school to freshman high school range, have in accessing art education. These issues include but are not limited to public schools not receiving enough funding for artistic learning material, the loss of artistic learning programs, and the increased demand on students to focus more on curriculum-based learning. Considering this, I wanted to tackle this problem by creating a prototype of an 8th-12th grade level booklet that contains information and interactive lessons about Graphic Design that are also fun and engaging to …

From Digital To Print: Investigating Ink And Paper Combinations In Photographic Printing, Jacquelyn Lily Bostock
From Digital To Print: Investigating Ink And Paper Combinations In Photographic Printing, Jacquelyn Lily Bostock
Graphic Communication
The significance of this project lies in its potential to deepen the understanding of how paper choice influences color reproduction in printed photographic works. As digital photography continues to advance, the demand for high-quality physical prints remains strong, requiring photographers and designers to carefully consider how materials impact the final image. This research provides valuable insights into how different paper substrates—specifically silk text stock and satin text stock—affect color accuracy, vibrancy, and tonal subtleties when printed using a standardized color management workflow.
By highlighting the interaction between printer limitations and paper characteristics, this project helps photographers and print professionals make …

Beyond Color: Design Approaches For Conveying Mood And Music Genre In Album Covers For Color Blind Accessibility, Victoria Erdmann
Senior Honors Theses
In the music industry, album cover design serves as a pivotal visual medium that not only acts as a marketing tool but can also shape a listener’s perception of the music. Designing album covers that are accessible to color blind individuals presents a unique challenge in an industry where color plays a significant role in design choices. This thesis examines how color vision deficiency impacts the perception of album art and defines four approaches that designers can take to ensure inclusive visual communication. By analyzing how contrast, typography, texture, and imagery can effectively convey genre and mood, designers can create …
Breaking The Curse: Rebranding The Sacramento Kings, Colby Sundeen
Breaking The Curse: Rebranding The Sacramento Kings, Colby Sundeen
Graphic Communication
The Sacramento Kings basketball team has a terrible reputation throughout the National Basketball Association (NBA) and has suffered a massive loss in their revenue and audience because of it. Even though they are the oldest team in the NBA and are based in the capital of California, which is the largest market in the world for basketball, they are consistently overshadowed by all of the other teams in California as well as most of the other teams in the NBA. This stems from their brand reputation which has slowly and consistently declined since the early 2000’s. Brand reputation is one …

Recomposing Museums: Designing Rhythmic Experiences For Short Attention Spans In The Digital Age, Yujiang Wu
Recomposing Museums: Designing Rhythmic Experiences For Short Attention Spans In The Digital Age, Yujiang Wu
Masters Theses
Learning, being the primary aspiration of museums, “is a byproduct of attention.”1 A visitor’s ability to focus and sustain attention on the objects, narratives, and messages within the exhibition environment profoundly influences their overall experience and the educational impact of their visit.
In an era of rapid digital evolution, changes in how information is consumed and communicated have led to shorter attention spans. Traditional museums, which are rooted in continuous, linear storytelling, now face a need for adaptation. This thesis advocates for an innovative exhibition design approach tailored to the realities of shorter attention spans, proposing curatorial and design …
Dimensional Dialogues, Farida Abousteit
Dimensional Dialogues, Farida Abousteit
Masters Theses
Dimensional Dialogues, a multi-installation series, offers us a place to interact with language in a way that is whimsical and transcends our need to understand and comprehend language. We remove the tensions of language barriers by finding beauty and personal connection to typography, now scaled up to a human scale and reacting in real time to our movements. A process begins from ancient practices of designing Arabic Calligraphy, to creating Graphic Outputs of that calligraphy, to technologically heavy and new works in creating 3D models of these works that can be projected and respond to human movement. These installations, in …
Dimensional Dialogues, Farida Abousteit
Dimensional Dialogues, Farida Abousteit
Masters Theses
What does it mean to be, hear, interpret and understand language? And does it truly matter if we don't? This work explores linguistic translation and mistranslation, through the exploration of three-dimensional and interactive spaces that to create an opportunity to interact with language as an visual and felt environment; rather than language on a page or the spoken word.
When we stand next to typography, next to language, scaled up to a human-sized presence, do we find an immediate kinship and warmth towards it? Do we find ourselves more captivated and intrigued?
I believe that when we encounter the unfamiliar …

Advertising To Generation Z, Taryn Romaine
Honors College Theses
The goal of this project is to analyze the history and background of those born between 1997 and 2012, also known as Generation Z, and determine its effect on how this Generation receives and reacts to advertising. In addition, through the use of a personally created and conducted poll, I gathered data on a portion of Generation Z individuals and their preferences to certain elements of advertisement design. These elements are text content, layout, color, and relatability/authenticity. My project discusses how advertisers and advertisement designers, such as myself, can implement these preferences in order to effectively advertise to Generation Z. …
