Hiro Postcards, Kira A. Kainz

Research & Creative Achievement Day

For the course entitled Advanced Design Project (ART 375), we were given the assignment to create a design project of our choice. This project was to be created over the course of Fall semester with five different phases that were to be markers for progress. In terms of my own project, I was deeply inspired by the idea that design could connect us. And additionally, I wanted to explore novelty item design. Which is the reason my brand Hiro Postcards it was it is today. In terms of the branding of Hiro Postcards, I decided to name it after my …

Redesigning A Fitness App Interface For Physiological Constrained Users*, Joseph E. Manzanillo

Campus Research Month

As fitness tracking converges with medical monitoring, inclusive design becomes a matter of health equity. This research utilizes a Polar Beat redesign to address exclusionary "sporty" aesthetics that can exclude 300 million colorblind users. Based in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), the study implements WCAG AA standards and color-blind-verified filters to mitigate data loss during Situational Induced Impairment (SIID), when high-intensity exercise compromises cognitive and visual processing. By optimizing user journeys for Paralympic and geriatric archetypes, this work demonstrates that accessibility is the essential bridge transitioning mobile fitness apps into viable, inclusive instruments for clinical medical use.

Visual Aids And Numeracy In Healthcare: Leveraging The Drawing Effect, Zephyr J. Markley Jan 2026

Visual Aids And Numeracy In Healthcare: Leveraging The Drawing Effect, Zephyr J. Markley

Capstone Showcase

Healthcare decisions often require patients to interpret numerical risk information under stress, yet many struggle with low numeracy, which can distort comprehension and undermine informed consent. Well-designed visual aids can improve diagnostic inference, calibrate confidence, and support better choices, especially for patients with limited numeracy, but their impact depends on whether users can actually interpret the format accurately. Drawing may further enhance these tools by adding a tactile, generative layer that engages visual, semantic, and motoric processing while helping patients organize information into concrete models.

Passive visual aids appear useful but limited because they often position patients as observers rather …

The NerveX fidget toy is a modern and stylish alternative to traditional fidget toys, designed especially for adults. Many fidget toys are made for children, which can make them feel out of place in professional or social settings. NerveX solves this problem by offering a discreet and effective way to manage stress, anxiety, and conditions like ADHD and OCD.

One of the key features of NerveX is its smooth, endless spinning motion. This repetitive movement helps people with ADHD stay focused and engaged in tasks. It can also provide comfort for individuals with OCD by giving them a calming action …

Grapholinguistics In Graphic Design, Cameron Schumann

Student Research Symposium

Writing systems function as more than linguistic tools; they serve as powerful cultural and aesthetic symbols that influence branding, fashion, and multimedia design. Through an examination of typographic symbolism, foreign scripts evoke themes of mystery, exoticism, brutalism, constructivism, and authoritarianism, shaping consumer perception and artistic narratives.

Creating An Index To Graduate Theses To Support Their Discoverability, Ellen Petraits Mar 2024

Creating An Index To Graduate Theses To Support Their Discoverability, Ellen Petraits

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

As a Research and Instruction Librarian, one of the most frequent questions I'm asked is how to find past theses on a particular topic or theme. There is an active thesis culture at RISD that goes beyond writing and binding a text. An exhibition is held in the graduate gallery to celebrate a curated selection of theses at the beginning of the academic year. (See Book of Thesis Books) Theses can range in format from an artist book to a loose-leaf portfolio. Many emphasize the visual and are a bridge to the student’s studio work. They may include unusual or …

Iequity: An Augmented Reality Theatre Production, Amy Pan, Kristina Arnold Dr, Alan White, Truth Tran

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Augmented reality is commonly seen being used in game development and design, typically seen through a mobile device such as a phone. However, it has rarely been tested and pushed to its limits in other settings. The main focus of this project was trying to deploy augmented reality in settings that are seen as more traditional. This will be done by taking a play, pre-written and performed by a professor at Western Kentucky University, and building an augmented reality set for the play in the background. The main software that will be used is Unity and Blender. Unity will be …

Imitation Of Life, Tiquasha Hagood Apr 2023

Imitation Of Life, Tiquasha Hagood

Undergraduate Research Competition

"A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" is an iconic painting by French artist Georges Seurat that features a group of elegantly dressed Parisians spending a leisurely Sunday afternoon on the banks of the Seine. While the painting is widely celebrated for its technical brilliance, it is also notable for the way it reflects the social norms and cultural values of 19th-century France. One such norm was the objectification and exploitation of Black women's bodies, exemplified by the tragic story of Sarah Baartman, a South African woman who was paraded across Europe as a spectacle because of …

Designing With Pink: Exploring Gender-Based Price Disparity Within Packaging Design, Kylie Grant Apr 2023

Designing With Pink: Exploring Gender-Based Price Disparity Within Packaging Design, Kylie Grant

Student Research Symposium

'The Pink Tax' broadly refers to the general tendency for products marketed toward female consumers to be more expensive than those marketed toward male consumers. This instance is seen most often in beauty and self care products, including items such as deodorant, body wash, clothing, etc. The name comes from the observation that many of the products marketed to women are pink. The name does not refer to actual tax. This study explores the validity of the claims surrounding the Pink Tax- and specifically focuses of packaging design's role in gender-based price discrimination. This includes the use of color, typography, …

Abakabadaf: Reclamation Of Queer Spaces And The Adoption Of Gayspeak By The Mainstream, Gel Ralfrey Louie O. Romero May 2022

Abakabadaf: Reclamation Of Queer Spaces And The Adoption Of Gayspeak By The Mainstream, Gel Ralfrey Louie O. Romero

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress

Gayspeak is a queer argot that was formed to shield the Filipino LGBT community back when discrimination was rampant in the Philippines. Today, gayspeak can be observed in the vocabulary of people that are not part of the LGBT community which shows progress in tolerance. Despite this, the fight for queer equality has still not been achieved. This paper explores the adaptation of gayspeak by the mainstream by interviewing non-LGBT users of gayspeak and gathering the perceptions of the LGBT community towards them. The research found that non-LGBT people use gayspeak because of its comedic nature, capacity for socialization, and …

Color Schemes In Department Store Brands, Annaleia Faith Altstaetter Apr 2022

Color Schemes In Department Store Brands, Annaleia Faith Altstaetter

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Why are color schemes important and how is it used in graphic design? Every business and brand intentionally uses colors schemes to design their visual identity. The same color can mean a variety of different things in different contexts. For example, national corporate department store chains such as Macy’s, Khol’s, Jcpenny, TjMaxx, and Nordstrom use certain color schemes to express their brand essence. In this industry, is there a consistent color scheme that communicated the essence of the brand? How do people perceptive the brands and the industry through color schemes?

To undertake this research project the following methods will …

To Park, Or Not To Park: Ohio Northern University's Parking Signage, James Joseph Meyers

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Parking is a very necessary accommodation for a good number of students, faculty, and guests on the campus of Ohio Northern University. Is finding parking on campus a challenge for students? If so, does that have anything to do with the signage presented to students?

The university offers an array of parking options for students on campus, but how effective are the signs they use to communicate who can park where? All the parking lots on campus are labeled with small white signs indicating who can park there depending on the pass they have. Colors indicate which lots are for …

For The Cry Of The Roar, Elizabeth M. Dingman Apr 2022

For The Cry Of The Roar, Elizabeth M. Dingman

ONU Student Research Colloquium

“For the Love of the Roar” summarizes Ohio Northern University’s athletics branding and how they present themselves to various audiences. The presence of the athletics branding even on social media platforms must communicate the brand essence of “team-orientation, ambition, pride, determination, integrity, and competitiveness” (ONU athletics Branding Guide).

Even with multiple varsity sports within ONU athletics, there needs to be consistency of how social media branding is used. It is important to communicate brand consistency in all social media platforms as branding is a critical aspect of any organization's identity and helps to distinguish an organization from its competitors.
