Donor Profile: Artful Thinking
DePaul Magazine
The original Andy Warhol artwork sat tucked away in a box in the back of Judy Blumberg's (BUS MS '80, MST '84) closet. Her late husband Avrom Blumberg, a longtime chemistry professor at DePaul, had a deep love of teaching. When his family began thinking about what to do with the Warhol artwork, they knew they wanted it to connect with others. So they turned to the DePaul Art Museum.
Modern Practices For Responsive Web Design And Web Accessibility, Keyaun Washington
Modern Practices For Responsive Web Design And Web Accessibility, Keyaun Washington
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Responsive web design and web accessibility play crucial roles in ensuring an optimal user experience on the web. By designing websites with responsiveness and accessibility in mind, more opportunities are opened up for a wider audience to access and interact with our content. Through modern practices, responsive web design allows websites to reach several different devices ranging from compact smartwatches to expansive television screens. Designing for accessibility provides accommodations for individuals with impairments while also providing benefits for individuals without impairments. However, designing for responsiveness and accessibility can present challenges; a poor attempt at providing accessibility features can worsen a …
Using Video Storytelling To Transform The Consumer Narrative Of Fashion Into One Of Caretaking: A First Step Towards A Sustainable Fashion Industry, Piumi De Alwis
Masters Theses
This study speaks about today’s apparel industry run by the consumption based “consumer narrative” and will introduce a sustainable alternative of “caretaker narrative,” a consumer oriented way of being to combat toxic practices in the apparel industry. Meanwhile on the other hand in today’s day and age video storytelling is getting extremely popular in the media we daily consume. This study examines how to effectively use video storytelling to popularize the sustainable practice of the “caretaker narrative” in society.
Looking To Entangle, Alex Mclaughlin
Looking To Entangle, Alex Mclaughlin
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
What kinds of images stick with you? Are they the ones that are readable, understandable right from the get-go? Surely not. Likely, they’re the ones that challenge you, frustrate you, and entangle you in the process of trying to understand them. This thesis argues that the semantics of looking, and the way in which the art-object is experienced through the process of looking, creates the opportunity for the unique engagement of the viewer as more than a bystander. By frustrating them with a lack of information, or rewarding them for looking harder, the artist can make the viewer aware of …
A Peeling Art, Terry Rim
A Peeling Art, Terry Rim
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
Action is greater than words, interaction is greater than viewing, and experience is greater than theory. So I came up with a way to make my art into an act of criticism toward consumerism. My art resembles colorful Pop Art on the surface but follows the defiant spirit of Dadaism at the core. It reveals the content full of dark humor and cynicism once the viewer “peels off” the appealing surface by interacting with it. The four artworks analyzed in the paper — Hole, The Twelephone and Alarming Alarm, Self-Destructive Ashtray, and Heavenly Cow — are designed …
Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine
Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Augmented reality (AR) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) introduce new considerations for the long-standing debate of what it means for digital art to be “real.” However, the ability to create AR experiences is limited to those who are technically skilled or who can afford to consult someone else. This paper addresses the need for an accessible tool that enables artists of all technical backgrounds to expressively create marks in AR. The solution includes a mobile application called CrayonAR. The system was designed to be modular, minimal, and physically engaging, and was developed in Unity using ARFoundation and Firebase Storage and Realtime …
On The Six-Cornered Snowflake, Jackson Hescock
On The Six-Cornered Snowflake, Jackson Hescock
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
On the Six-Cornered Snowflake, named after Johannes Kepler’s 1611 essay on geometrically covering surfaces, is both the title of both my final thesis work and essay. Beginning with an inquiry into the nature of hand-made object as intrinsically valuable, my earlier sculptural work surrounding quilting is broken down and considered as a form of reverence for the American object. This is partly achieved through a comparison to traditional Japanese packing techniques and how my own assembly mirrors and converses with the graceful and sensitive packing of Japanese hand-made goods. Early 20th-century flight experiments are also hand-made objects of …
Whose Art Museum? Immersive Gaming As Irruption, Jason M. Cox, Lillian Lewis
Whose Art Museum? Immersive Gaming As Irruption, Jason M. Cox, Lillian Lewis
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This paper introduces Mantles in the Museum, an immersive game that helps ameliorate student discomfort in art museums and to support discourse in, through, and around art museums. Within the game the students take on the roles of critics who use one of five interpretive frameworks, often differing from the student’s own, to select works from a real museum to go to an international exhibition. Assuming these roles empowers students to be in the museum and to assess the works, students are given leave to engage in a vigorous critique process and to examine the art-world from a new perspective.
A Meditation On Loneliness And The Mind's Limits: Combining Buddhism And Art To Better Understand Our Relationship To The Unknown, William Masters
A Meditation On Loneliness And The Mind's Limits: Combining Buddhism And Art To Better Understand Our Relationship To The Unknown, William Masters
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
In this essay, I explain how my art practice instigates inquiry into uncomfortable subjects such as loneliness and how our limits of perception and cognition prevent us from understanding and connecting fully with our environments. I begin by illustrating how I make such subjects more approachable by exploiting the inherent capacity of art to be both pleasurable and painful: a work's pleasing aesthetic can make one more receptive to its disquieting content. I then describe how eastern philosophy and western art have influenced my practice. I highlight how Buddhist insights into the relationship between calmness, security and clarity have informed …
To Dig A Hole And Fill It Back Up, Jackson Whetstone
To Dig A Hole And Fill It Back Up, Jackson Whetstone
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
Abstract:
The socioeconomical philosophy of the United States is still very much related to the Marxist Labor Theory of Value which states that “the economic value of a good or service is determined by the amount of socially necessary labor required to produce it” (Das Kapital, Marx 1.) This philosophy has penetrated the way that we think about art and object, and in turn positions art as a means of transaction, thus limiting art to a form of glorified currency. This Essay will chronicle my art practice, that have led up to two thesis pieces, Trench and Dig …
A Loud Volume Landscape, Grace Buyers
A Loud Volume Landscape, Grace Buyers
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
It feels more like sounding it out than constructing it. Choosing and adapting images, concentrating on the auxiliary fragments (out-of-focus elements, the corner of the table, the reflection in the window, the highway median) and the backgrounds (the sky and its clouds, the gravel ground, the movement of the water, the horizons where these meet), I then breathe them together. The final products are primarily collages, and though they are originally constructed from printed media and found objects, their final forms are scanned and rematerialized. The content of these works focuses on the relationships between the chosen fragments and how …

Game Design: Competitive Mobile Games, Kalen Wallin
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This thesis explores the design process for a competitive multiplayer game mode in “baldorf,” a ball-throwing mobile game developed by Mystic Rhoads Productions. The research aims to enhance the overall gaming experience by introducing a competitive mode that challenges players’ skills and facilitates interaction with others. The research methodology included reviewing the popular competitive mobile games: Marvel Snap, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans, which boast high download numbers and chart rankings. This analysis helped identify key features and mechanics that contribute to an engaging multiplayer experience. As a result, several designs were proposed, covering the profile, matchmaking, match, and …
Accompanied Solo: A Singer/Songwriter's Look Into The Music Industry From Design To Debut Album, Vivienne Mccracken
Accompanied Solo: A Singer/Songwriter's Look Into The Music Industry From Design To Debut Album, Vivienne Mccracken
Honors Theses
Vivi McCracken is my self-titled debut Extended Play Record (or EP) that consists of five original songs. This project encompasses all of my creative passions, with the aim of gaining knowledge of the music industry and what it takes to debut an album from concept to completion. I wrote the music, sang the songs for the recordings, and, for my BFA thesis exhibition, I designed all the graphics, merchandise, and collateral.
The cover art is intentionally minimal. I wanted the imagery to be the main focus, so I chose a condensed sans serif typeface that felt playful enough to complement …
Drawing As Process: Expansiveness Through Constraint, Ciel Miao
Drawing As Process: Expansiveness Through Constraint, Ciel Miao
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
This paper explores the concept of drawing as a time-based practice, where the process is the core of the artwork rather than the finished product. I divide my artistic concerns into four chapters, each advancing on the previous one, to discuss my drawing practice, which allows for exploration of time and space across a wide array of media and styles of representation. I embrace impulse and intuition in the mark-making process, letting go of control while prioritizing the form of depicted figures over their image. This paper highlights the importance of my inner contradiction and how the process reflects my …
Melting, Dripping, Becoming: The Operations Of Memory From The Perspective Of Wax, Naomi Yu
Melting, Dripping, Becoming: The Operations Of Memory From The Perspective Of Wax, Naomi Yu
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
In my thesis, I explore how different compositional and material techniques are used to re-create a memory. Looking at artists such as Kiki Smith, Guadalupe Maravilla, and Anselm Keifer, I investigate the ways in which they utilize 2D and 3D materials to re-create feelings of memory.
I argue that the art object can conserve and portray memory through metaphorical acts of preservation. I will be specifically studying the acts of encasing and layering as a means to simulate the feelings of memory. I argue that these metaphorical actions create an artificial sense of time that imbues these objects with created …
The Hospitality Of Doubt, Ian Grieve
The Hospitality Of Doubt, Ian Grieve
Art Theses and Dissertations
This paper discusses the last two years of research toward a Master of Fine Art in Studio Art. I mainly address my painting practice, but while in the program, I have worked in collage, ceramics, intaglio printmaking, and sculpture. My paintings are thick, multilayered, and often contain ambiguous narratives. The pictures develop through engagement, openness, and response within the work. I seek and embrace connection with viewers of the work. The spectator ‘completes’ the art and enhances or alters the artworks meaning by observing it and applying their individual perspectives. I seek to incorporate a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. …
Eco-Interoception: What Plants, Fungi And Protista Have Taught My Body, Sara Riley Dotterer
Eco-Interoception: What Plants, Fungi And Protista Have Taught My Body, Sara Riley Dotterer
Art Theses and Dissertations
To me, ecology is the relational, full-body awareness that I am made up of and deeply connected to everything around me; and for better or worse, this is reciprocal. I form ecotones, an ecological transitional zone between two ecosystems, with the world around me. I use this ecotonal lens to blur binaries and dissolve boundaries between me and the world “outside my body.” During my Masters of Fine Arts at Southern Methodist University, I have continuously explored and represented the lives of various more-than-human species outside of my body, including plants, fungi and protista through an ecotonal lens. Although these …
A New Museum Experience: Survival And Best Practices, Sophia Holmes
A New Museum Experience: Survival And Best Practices, Sophia Holmes
Art 895 Research Papers
This study researches how museums adapt to changing technologies as well as opportunities to retain their audience and visitors while finding new best practices to help in their survival as an institution. It examines how different museums in the United States predict the trajectory of their museum will continue forwards through the different offerings they provide. This study explores how technology and social media, modern exhibitions and initiatives, community outreach and campaigns, and more contribute to the museums’ continuation in the current industry landscape. I examine these ideas through interviewing art museum educators at institutions around the US, examining the …
Cross-Curricular Content: Integrating Standards And Learning Objectives, Kristen Douglas
Cross-Curricular Content: Integrating Standards And Learning Objectives, Kristen Douglas
Art 895 Research Papers
This action research study takes a look at the opportunity art teachers have in utilizing other content standards and lesson objectives in their class, by using eighth grade math standards in an animation project as an example of this perspective. Within the study, we will see how integrating standards from another subject area in one’s own curriculum will effect project outcomes and student understanding in art.

A Case Study In Developing Instruction That Enhances Student Creative Behavior, Hillary Schlecht
Art 895 Research Papers
This case study examines the best practices in developing instruction to enhance student artists creativity. Using a transformative mixed methods approach, this study shows how teacherdirected lessons and choice-based art projects within a learner directed classroom using the practices with the philosophy of Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) can enhance student artist creativity. The goal of this case study is to reflect and evaluate the different strategies I have used over the last five years to develop an art curriculum that enhances student creativity. This case study will reflect the findings from my classroom over the last five years. I …
Heretic Territories: Spells For Fracture, Mia Greenwald
Heretic Territories: Spells For Fracture, Mia Greenwald
Masters Theses, 2020-current
This monograph accompanies the MFA thesis exhibition, Heretic Territories: spells for fracture. The show uses video, weaving, clay, and bacterial/fungal bodies in three main bodies of work: Inter; Lost, remain, fracture; and For, Of Them. The pieces, and the relationship between them, explore themes of magic, the body, and land in contradiction and opposition to colonial and capitalist structures. I approach the artificial hierarchies that subjugate people, non-human creatures, and land while trying not to replicate the mistakes of posthumanist scholarship that bypasses the fact that not all people are afforded full access to the category …

This Memory Is Redacted But Not Gone, Wanda-Marie Rana
Art - All Scholarship
In this paper, This memory is redacted but not gone, I discuss how my artistic practice, my time in graduate school, and my own life experiences have led me to create my thesis project. The paper is split up into chapters describing the work I made while in graduate school along with my themes; memory, family, home, and identity, and methods; archive, collage, and investigation, of working. I then dedicate a chapter specifically to my thesis work before concluding the paper with my plans to continue my practice after graduate school.
The Impact Of Words Save Lives In Leavenworth, Ks, Michaela Bristow Fitzgerald
The Impact Of Words Save Lives In Leavenworth, Ks, Michaela Bristow Fitzgerald
Art 895 Research Papers
This case study explores the impact of Words Save Lives, an event expanded to Leavenworth, Kansas and hosted by LV Arts Inc. in September 2022. Using a mixed methods approach to data collection, this study is guided by four research questions: 1.) How can arts and humanities events, programs, and initiatives be used as a means for arts-based placemaking in Leavenworth? 2.) Do residents of Leavenworth feel a connection to the arts as a result of participating in arts and humanities events, programming, and initiatives and, more specifically, Words Save Lives? 3.) Does the Words Save Lives event in Leavenworth …
Dirt Circus: Queering Sports And Home Through Filth, Hannah Patteson
Dirt Circus: Queering Sports And Home Through Filth, Hannah Patteson
Masters Theses, 2020-current
This monograph accompanies the MFA Thesis Exhibition, “Dirt Circus”. I outline the history of circus and carnival culture and the ways in which queer identities are expressed through these artistic modes. I describe the nonconforming expressions of gender in these arenas through bearded ladies, aerialists, clowns, and the freak show. I then explore various groups from the 70’s to present day, including Bread and Puppet Theater, The Cockettes, and Split Britches, who utilize performance to further their ideologies of gender freedom, anti-capitalism, and sexual liberation. I compare our differing uses of cheap art and public engagement within the realm of …
All Clear: A Workbook For Sexually Active Accutane Users Who Can Become Pregnant, Taylor Petersen
All Clear: A Workbook For Sexually Active Accutane Users Who Can Become Pregnant, Taylor Petersen
Honors Projects
Accutane is a pill-based derivative of Vitamin A used to treat cystic acne. The process to start and continue the medication each month is tedious and full of potential for error. This is especially true for female patients who are able to become pregnant as they have the additional step of monitoring and updating their birth control through an online portal. Patients are treated like numbers and there is little to no customization within Accutane treatment from patient to patient. To make this worse, reliable information about the drug is scarce and many turn to social media platforms or other …
Perils Of The Heroine: The Historic Role Of Woman In Comics, Britain Bray
Perils Of The Heroine: The Historic Role Of Woman In Comics, Britain Bray
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
Now more than ever the comics industry is welcoming diversity in its creators and stories, but with its historically misogynistic past, what legacy are creators inheriting? This essay seeks to explore that history, delving into the various eras of American Comics and how sexism shaped them. From the earliest heroines of the 40s, the ground-breaking feminist indie comics of the 70s, and the rampant female sexualization of the 90s, examples of brilliance and drudgery will be investigated in order to gain a better understanding of how comics became what they are today.
My Kinship With The Trees, C. Daniela Shapiro
My Kinship With The Trees, C. Daniela Shapiro
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This paper explores facets of patriarchy affecting women and the natural world. The paper suggests a cultivation of allyship and relationality between women and nature due to a shared experience of objectification within patriarchy. The separation of women from nature through origin stories, science, religion, language, and advertisement will be discussed. Examples from the graphic memoir Running without Moving are employed to emphasize this philosophy, including first person accounts.
Prosthetic Traveling Companions, Carrie Keasler
Prosthetic Traveling Companions, Carrie Keasler
MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture
This essay explores the potential for narrative art (film, literature, comics) to be a transformative experience in the life of the consumer (viewer, reader) through a sensuous, embodied interaction with that work of narrative art. Drawing from film, narrative and comics theory as well as primary sources, I show that there is potential for consumers to engage in reading and viewing in an embodied way that allows them to take on these experiences as new memories, highlighting the ability of art to engage our senses in a manner that is similar to everyday lived experiences. In contrast with some theories …
