Parallel Design Of A Product And Internet Of Things (Iot) Architecture To Minimize The Cost Of Utilizing Big Data (Bd) For Sustainable Value Creation, Ryan Bradley, Ibrahim S. Jawahir, Niko Murrell, Julie Whitney

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

Information has become today's addictive currency; hence, companies are investing billions in the creation of Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks that gamble on finding trends that reveal sustainability and/or efficiency improvements. This approach to “Big Data” can lead to blind, astronomical costs. Therefore, this paper presents a counter approach aimed at minimizing the cost of utilizing “Big Data” for sustainable value creation. The proposed approach leverages domain/expert knowledge of the system in combination with a machine learning algorithm in order to limit the needed infrastructure and cost. Abstract-Glaze Testing: Methods And Results, Hannah Perry

Undergraduate Research Conference

Floating blue is a glaze that appears to have a blue layer floating over an earthy undertone, giving it the illusion of depth. The base of the glaze floating blue was taken aside while its original colorants (rutile, red iron oxide, and cobalt carbonate) were added in different increments with other ones to get different hues. The main goal was to produce a green version of floating blue, that is, a glaze that has the same textural and visual effect as floating blue that instead has a green hue. This was tested by replacing cobalt carbonate with copper carbonate, while …

Mourning A Menagerie Of Martyrs, Sarah Jentsch

Undergraduate Research Conference

As we enter 2017, animals only face more challenges from climate change and shrinking habitat. The endangerment of these species often puts their entire ecosystem at risk. I wanted to highlight this issue by creating a series of prints focusing on a few species threatened by the habitat loss and climate change that comes with our modern way of life.

How I Came To Dominican, Lisa Wagenhurst

I remember like it was yesterday. It was late on a hot Friday afternoon in mid-
August and the sun was shining with the fierceness that August is notorious for, even in Northern California. Everywhere I looked there were trees and flowers and beautiful lawns. ~excerpt from short story

The Frog Pond, Valerie Silver Apr 2017

The Frog Pond, Valerie Silver

Each January, the frog pond calls to me. I drive across town to the Discovery

The Long Side Of The Tracks, James Metzger

The Tuxedo Archives

In just three short weeks I traveled upwards of 8000 miles of rail, circulating around an antiquated network of industrial savagery, from Oakland CA to Oakland CA, trading stories and cigarettes with other wayward travelers while waiting for more important trains of cattle and produce to take the tracks. ~excerpt from short story

Pieces, Brittany Blake

She still wakes up some nights in cold sweats with a scream rising like bile in her throat, waiting to fling itself out into the world. Sometimes she’s awake enough to hold it back and sometimes she can even fall asleep again. Sometimes, she can’t. ~excerpt from short story

Our love is the strongest.

A foreign land that I was unfamiliar with,

Bayon Temple, Angkor Cambodia, Joseph Meyers

My sandals stomp slowly up the temple stairs.
One foot after the other I walk almost unaware
of the many faces above me carved in stone.
Each one unique and could stand on its own. ~excerpt from poem

Calculations, Elizabeth Pode Apr 2017

Calculations, Elizabeth Pode

The Tuxedo Archives

The fringes of the velvet petals brush up against the timeless bone-white bark. Her slender hand trembles, naked as it is without the gleaming ring she had dreamt of so often. There were two roses. One stark and wilting with its fleeting beauty, covering up the gaping scar. It was left at the graveside. ~excerpt from poem

Down East Maine, Gibb David Apr 2017

Down East Maine, Gibb David

The Tuxedo Archives

It began with the long, silent drive past endless

lobster pounds and fishing towns that litter

the landscape of Down East Maine like seagulls

swarming a freshly pulled pot, like canvas tents

on the small island that was my summer home. ~excerpt from poem
