Mmorpgs And Their Effect On Players, Udit Manocha
ART 108: Introduction to Games Studies
The purpose of this essay is to explore the popularity and effects of video games in the MMORPG genre. Games and play have been a part of human culture for an exceptionally long time, and in the recent decades video games have a become a large medium to continue this. Studying how video games, such as MMORPGs, can be used in order to advance life skills is important to understand the future of human development. By researching other studies done on various topics of related to MMORPG, I developed the idea that this genre of video games could be very …

Making Sense Of Nonsense, Parker Boales
Making Sense Of Nonsense, Parker Boales
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A paradox of simultaneous sincerity and humor, Making Sense of Nonsense attempts to identify deficient systems upon which we rely daily. Systems of logic, text, and visual language are all rife with flaws solely because their source--humankind--is irrevocably bound to error. This is not to say that these systems cannot be improved; on the contrary, a rigorous investigation of these systems allows one insight into their mechanics to the end that one endlessly questions the very foundation of the mode of communication being used. Materials and discarded objects such as vintage tools, automotive parts, spray paint, string, furniture, plastic, S&M …
To The Moon And Back, Michael Tyler Pennekamp
To The Moon And Back, Michael Tyler Pennekamp
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Almost fifty years after the Apollo 11 mission, the moon landing remains one of humankind’s most remarkable technological achievements. On the lunar surface, the Eagle’s flight crew left behind an American flag, mementos honoring those who lost their lives in the quest for such an achievement, and a plaque reading, “Here men from the planet Earth set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” Despite overwhelming proof of this achievement—radio transmissions, photographs, film, rock and soil samples—a sizable minority of Americans continue to view the Apollo 11 moon landing as a hoax. To …
Off The Grid, Matthew Owen Buffington
Off The Grid, Matthew Owen Buffington
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Off the Grid explores the messy relationship between public and private perceptions of our urban spaces, especially the tensions created when lived experience runs up against the physical and conceptual networks of cities: street grids, construction tape, and property lines. Incorporating different modes of spatial representation, from cartographic diagrams to isometric illustrations and Renaissance perspectives, this exhibition examines the role drawing plays in how we conceptualize the divisions and definitions of everyday space. The drawings engage the often overlooked detritus of city life, from layers of old graffiti to overgrown dirt piles and unmoored electrical wiring, that complicate our understanding …
Dinner, Daniel Reuben Baskin
Dinner, Daniel Reuben Baskin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dinner is an interactive exhibition which presents appropriated works of art collected and hung in a clustered salon style, as well as a fully realized recreation based on a 16th century Dutch banquet still-life, which presents guests with meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, breads, and wine to share and imbibe. Dining ware is provided for guests at the entrance to the exhibit, as are suggested topics of conversation, which are presented on slips of paper for guests to carry with them throughout their time in the space. Within the collection of wall-mounted works are references to ancient Greek and Roman marble …
Two-Faced And Vulnerable, Stephanie Wright
Two-Faced And Vulnerable, Stephanie Wright
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
A helpless calf suspended by a balloon. A dog attempting to focus through a set of blinders. Vultures circling over an abandoned bed. The situations in which these animals find themselves might seem, at first glance, quirky or ambiguous. But we can easily empathize with their perceivable state. Through fables, myths, religion, everyday interaction, and animal husbandry, we have made animals and emotions recognizable metaphors for humankind. These animals address broader human experience; certainly the notions of “human nature” and culture are themselves human constructs. We self-consciously work to define our existence through the separation of the concept of “society” …
Viewing Heaven: Rock Crystal, Reliquaries, And Transparency In Fourteenth-Century Aachen, Claire Kilgore
Viewing Heaven: Rock Crystal, Reliquaries, And Transparency In Fourteenth-Century Aachen, Claire Kilgore
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
This thesis examines reliquaries and objects associated with medieval Christian practice in fourteenth-century Aachen. The city's cathedral and treasury contain prestigious relics, reliquaries, and liturgical items, aided by its status as the Holy Roman Empire's coronation church. During the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV (r. 1349-1378), reliquaries, pilgrimage, and architecture reflect late medieval interests in vision, optics, and transparency. Two mid-fourteenth century reliquaries from the Aachen Cathedral Treasury, the Reliquary of Charlemagne and the Three-Steepled Reliquary, display relics through rock crystal windows, in contrast to the obscuring characteristics of earlier reliquaries. Not only do the two reliquaries visually …
The Living Chain: An Applied Exploration Of Mythological Narrative And Traditional Printmaking Techniques, Jordan M. Gillenwater
The Living Chain: An Applied Exploration Of Mythological Narrative And Traditional Printmaking Techniques, Jordan M. Gillenwater
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Living Chain is a body of work built to apply and analyze mythological narrative and traditional printmaking techniques. The work is a collection of prints telling an original narrative that derives much of its visual and thematic style from the works of the Baroque and Medieval periods, as well as significant influence from the prints of Gustave Doré. The purpose of this paper is to explore the ideas, mythologies, histories, and symbols found in and inspiring the work, in order to better understand the work’s purpose and its technical challenges. Additional focus is given to the historical significance and …

Archetypes In Clay, Kaylea N. Williams
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The artist discusses the background, ideas, and work entitled Archetypes in Clay, for the completion of her Bachelor of Arts Degree and undergraduate research for the Fine and Performing Arts Scholar program at East Tennessee State University. The artist used this development of work to explore personality types, and how they can be portrayed through clay vessels. In particular, the artist shows her work, how she created the vessels, the testing involved, and the struggles she faced. Archetypes is the focus behind the concept of this project. Her work includes four ceramic vessels, created with clay and finished with glaze. …
Transcendence Of Familial Expectations In Alison Bechdel’S Graphic Novels, Anna Priore
Transcendence Of Familial Expectations In Alison Bechdel’S Graphic Novels, Anna Priore
Honors Projects
This thesis focuses on the graphic novels "Are You My Mother?" and "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel. I discuss the ways in which Bechdel highlights her own family’s atypical structure and how the ambiguous presentation of familial roles causes readers to see that being in a “queer” family is actually ordinary, just as being in an “ordinary” family is queer.

Constructing Space And Framing The Beholder: Problems And Solutions In Gustave Caillebotte’S Compositions, Araceli Bremauntz Enriquez
Constructing Space And Framing The Beholder: Problems And Solutions In Gustave Caillebotte’S Compositions, Araceli Bremauntz Enriquez
Art and Art History Honors Theses
This project investigates Gustave Caillebotte's techniques of constructing and arranging space. Previous scholarship has examined the artist's works in light of external, social, and historic evidence, therefore, my account will provide a detailed formal analysis of the works considering the role of the intended viewer. In looking closely Young Man Playing the Piano, Man at his Bath, and Pont de l’Europe, I argue that the viewpoint assigned to the beholder projects an irreconcilable vision of modernity. Caillebotte utilizes elements of representational painting--viewpoints, the illusion of time, the arrangement of people within space, and the built structures that describe space--in order …
La Cité That Care Forgot: Public Housing And The Perception Of 'Ordinary Modernism' In Paris And New Orleans, Brooks Cameron Piper
La Cité That Care Forgot: Public Housing And The Perception Of 'Ordinary Modernism' In Paris And New Orleans, Brooks Cameron Piper
Art and Art History Honors Theses
The Lafitte housing complex in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Barre Balzac apartment tower outside Paris typified the ordinary modernism that transformed cities around the world in the mid-twentieth century. I use the term “ordinary modernism” to refer specifically to buildings that exhibit characteristics of modern architecture, but lack the pedigree of iconic buildings designed by famous architects for illustrious clients. Lafitte and Balzac were public housing projects, possessing neither the opulence of a private villa nor the grandeur of a house of parliament. Although contemporary scholars and new residents alike admired the projects for their modernity at their construction, …
Literacy Revolution: How The New Tools Of Communication Change The Stories We Tell, Molly Gamble
Literacy Revolution: How The New Tools Of Communication Change The Stories We Tell, Molly Gamble
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
The transmission of culture depends upon every generation reconsidering what it means to be literate. The way we consider ourselves to be a literate species is changing, which puts us at a unique turning point in human history. Verbal literacy, or the ability to read and write, is slowly being replaced by visual literacy as a primary tool for human communication. As a culture, we tend to underestimate the creative ferment of our increasingly visual world. The linear, structured pathways of traditional literacy are shifting towards a creative and participatory pursuit of unstructured information that emphasize dimensional thinking. The acceleration …
