Since my project is interdisciplinary, I chose to write an artist statement instead of an abstract.

Artist Statement

For my project, I chose to photograph the Hawaiian
Honeycreeper, or ‘I’iwi, in their native habitat in Maui.
They have a remarkable story of evolution and extinction that both intrigues and disturbs me to my core. There were once 56 species that evolved from a single ancestor, but 38 have been driven to extinction by man’s impact on their fragile native habitat.

Victorian Counter-Worlds And The Uncanny: The Fantasy Illustrations Of Walter Crane And Arthur Rackham, Amzie A. Dunekacke

I will prepare an in-depth examination of the different, often opposing ways illustrators Walter Crane and Arthur Rackham portray elements of fantasy in their fairy tale illustrations. Fantasy in fairy tales became very popular during the “Golden Age of Illustration” in Britain, which lasted from the mid nineteenth century until the First World War. Fantasy served as a form of escapism from the rigidity of Victorian society and the increasingly industrialized culture. Artist Bio: James Kao was born and raised in Houston, Texas. After studying philosophy and focusing on the texts of Ludwig Wittgenstein at the University of Chicago, he worked as a bakery buyer for a specialty foods retail chain in Southern California.
