Symbols Of Heaven: An Analysis Of Iconographic Programs In Gothic Western Facades, Gerald Hansen Iii, Dr. Mark Johnson Jan 2014

Symbols Of Heaven: An Analysis Of Iconographic Programs In Gothic Western Facades, Gerald Hansen Iii, Dr. Mark Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Gothic churches are vivid expressions of Catholic doctrine and local culture. Doctrinally churches have a similar basic purpose—to unite members of the community for the teaching of church doctrine and for the celebration of religious sacraments or holidays. However, each church often has additional unique functions based on religious, political, economic, or other factors of the era and region. One of the most important means by which a church illustrates these purposes is through the symbolic art and architecture decorating its interior and exterior. This church iconography is meant to communicate to the community the Catholic plan of salvation and …

Mi Buenos Aires Querido, John Gordon, Linda Sullivan Jan 2014

Mi Buenos Aires Querido, John Gordon, Linda Sullivan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The project Mi Buenos Aires Querido was a wonderful opportunity for me to begin my work on a professional level as a graphic designer and artist. The project explores cross cultural design as well as experiential communication and the marginalization of Latin America. I never intended to exhibit a photo essay, presenting glossy photos glamorizing Buenos Aires. Doing so would make people think the city is beautiful, and while it is the beauty is not superficial. I wanted to communicate the beauty and struggle of everyday life in the neighborhood of La Boca. La Boca was chosen because it once …

Velocity, Collin Bradford, Peter Everett Jan 2014

Velocity, Collin Bradford, Peter Everett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As citizens of contemporary Western culture, we have inherited a set of ideas about the nature of human life. A large part of our understanding of the world is based in the ideas of the Modern era. Though the majority of the populace may be unaware of the influence that the past has on our contemporary lives we cannot escape our modernist heritage. A large part of the worldview that we inherited is the linearity of time. There is an interesting contradiction between modernism’s linear time and the Cartesian idea of God as the master clockmaker. A clock functions based …

A Symbolic Study Of Van Eyck’S Annunciation, David Amott, Dr. Martha Peacock Jan 2014

A Symbolic Study Of Van Eyck’S Annunciation, David Amott, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Northern Renaissance artist who best understood iconography’s potential in painting was Jan van Eyck (1390-1441), whose Annunciation (1434) is a masterpiece of Netherlandish art and one of the most important paintings of the Northern Renaissance. Integrated into this work is symbolism that refers to the Trinity, the Old and New Testament, and events leading up to the birth of Christ. Outside of the painting’s major symbolic cycle, however, are a number of other details that add further meaning to the scene. Among these are the rainbow colored wings of the Archangel Gabriel embellished with peacock feathers. These details are …

Non-Toxic Intaglio Printmaking, Todd Chilton, Gary Barton Jan 2014

Non-Toxic Intaglio Printmaking, Todd Chilton, Gary Barton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Intaglio printmaking is a process that carries with it a tradition of hazardous chemicals and solvents that is not only dangerous for artists and students, but also for the environment. As an artist, I am concerned with the negative effects of working with these substances. In our day of increased health and safety awareness, as well as environmental consciousness, certain traditional methods of printmaking are being replaced with safer, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly processes. Traditional techniques are expensive, and it is difficult to continue working with these processes outside of a university with a well-equipped shop. The dangers and …

Acclimation, Rory Dlugos Jan 2014

Acclimation, Rory Dlugos

Art Journal

In fragmenting the human figure, I hope to express loss of control or the inability to know one’s future. On a daily basis, I am bombarded with this anxiety-ridden dilemma. In my work, this struggle manifests itself in the figures’ expressions and poses. The seamless integration of figures into the background can be seen as their successful ability to merge with their changing environment; in other words, a positive adaptation of self.

At other times, the figure-background dichotomy represents the struggle to adapt to change and maintain a constantly evolving, healthy self. In some works, the figures are rooted in …

60, Casey Cullen Jan 2014

60, Casey Cullen

Art Journal

Through my body of work, 60, I aim to convey my confusion of learning a new style of photography along with the uncertainty of identity. The confusion of what is going on in the photograph coincides with the unfamiliarity of the camera and the more general disorientation of everyday life. My photographs question different methods of photography through the use of an old process while also questioning the term “portrait.” Working with a camera that has been surpassed and forgotten about has allowed me to keep the process alive. A large format camera enables me to have more freedom in …

Memory Tokens, Julia Christ Jan 2014

Memory Tokens, Julia Christ

Art Journal

My work deals with memory and the affliction of forgetfulness. Memories start out vivid and get washed over, dulled. New experiences cover up those of the past, and the authority of our memories is called into question. Like most humans, I collect memories compulsively; like souvenirs in a hoarder’s obsessive sanctuary, those memories start to pile up. They become indistinguishable and forgotten. These collected memory tokens, whether or not they are consciously acknowledged, trigger different emotional responses and forever influence my identity.

When I revisit a place, I am brought back to events that previously occurred there; multitudes of past …

Solitaire, Dominic Channon Jan 2014

Solitaire, Dominic Channon

Art Journal

Commencing with the characteristics of my self as an only child, a distance runner, and an heir to my father's nomadic behavior, I have become interested in developing a further concept of self based on our capability to form our knowledge and interpretation of the world to our being. The experimentation with time and perception through the use of the camera has become my obsession. I want to create balance and repose through my work, challenging the perception of what it is that we know. My challenge is to create work that maintains these consistencies yet renders subject matter in …

Hide And Seek, Tess Wilson Jan 2014

Hide And Seek, Tess Wilson

Art Journal

I see myself as an analyst of my surroundings. I have a predisposition for noticing and appreciating miniscule details in life. Consequently, I take photographs and make digital drawings of found objects that possess textured qualities. Whether walking to class, waiting for the train, even sitting in my kitchen at home, texture is everywhere.

My collages are meant to avoid fixity; but most especially, my collages are meant to confront the notion of abstraction and reality. Through digital imaging, I alter reality by manipulating the color, light and detail of an object at close range. To me, abstraction is a …

Compositing 3d Computer Generated Images And Live Footage, Ryan Jensen, Cameron Earle, Dr. Brent Adams Jan 2014

Compositing 3d Computer Generated Images And Live Footage, Ryan Jensen, Cameron Earle, Dr. Brent Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

3D imagery is used to enhance traditional film footage in all areas of the film and video industry. In order to be prepared for industry, it is necessary for students to be familiar with the process of putting live and computer generated images together in a believable fashion. Because of the recent beginning of the Animation majors at BYU, this technique has not been sufficiently taught to students. We were able to learn and use this technique in our research. We hope to be able to use our findings and experiences to teach others in the animation programs. BYU possesses …

Anthropometrics Of The Hand For Use In Ergonomic Design, Nathaniel Hanson, Dr. Richard Fry Jan 2014

Anthropometrics Of The Hand For Use In Ergonomic Design, Nathaniel Hanson, Dr. Richard Fry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Industrial designers must balance a wide array of factors in their creation of useful products. The most important of these factors include functionality, reliability, and aesthetics, as well as market factors such as cost. Over the course of the last century, designers and design engineers have been increasingly compelled to adapt their designs to the varied physiological characteristics of the consumer. The growth of disabled populations, increased international trade, and greater understanding of human thought processes further necessitate and complicate accurate, representative anthropometric data tabulation and ‘ergonomic’ design in general.

Society And Style: Prints From The Sheldon Museum Of Art, Alison G. Stewart, Paul Royster Jan 2014

Society And Style: Prints From The Sheldon Museum Of Art, Alison G. Stewart, Paul Royster

Zea E-Books Collection

This collection of works explores how Societies and Styles changed over the course of Early Modern Europe (1500-1800) from the time of the advent of printing on paper to the Industrial Revolution and beyond through little-seen printed masterpieces from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection. Today, “print” continues to endure even as new forms of digital publications transform our world in previously unimaginable ways, just as printing did centuries ago.

This exhibition offers a view into the ways printed works of art on paper (mostly woodcuts, engravings, and etchings) showcase society and its various aspects, ranging from one Christian martyrdom …

Central Falls Welcome Sign Project Phase 2, Lindsay Guastefeste, Elyssa Roketenetz, Jorge Saenz, Jake Wheeler, Arnold Robinson Jan 2014

Central Falls Welcome Sign Project Phase 2, Lindsay Guastefeste, Elyssa Roketenetz, Jorge Saenz, Jake Wheeler, Arnold Robinson

Graphic Design

For this design, the intent was to create a completely different identity for the City of Central Falls, as well as create a stronger connection with the state of Rhode Island. The curved shape that is created by the top portion of the design suggests a relationship with the Ocean State and the symbol of the wave that is seen throughout the State and even its license plate. It also creates a more modern approach with its abstract shape as well as creates a new and recognizable destination for tourists and locals. The use of brick for the base suggests …

Advances In Documentation, Digital Curation, Virtual Exhibition, And A Test Of 3d Geometric Morhpometrics: A Case Study Of The Vanderpool Vessels From The Ancestral Caddo Territory, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula, Michael J. O'Brien Jan 2014

O'Brien

CRHR: Archaeology

Three-dimensional (3D) digital scanning of archaeological materials is typically used as a tool for artifact documentation. With the permission of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, 3D documentation of Caddo funerary vessels from the Vanderpool site (41SM77) was conducted with the initial goal of ensuring that these data would be publicly available for future research long after the vessels were repatriated. A digital infrastructure was created to archive and disseminate the resultant 3D datasets, ensuring that they would be accessible by both researchers and the general public (CRHR 2014a). However, 3D imagery can be used for much more than documentation. To …

E-Portfolios In The Design Curriculum: Enhancing The Practical Dimensions Of The Design Studio Class, Órla Keane Jan 2014

E-Portfolios In The Design Curriculum: Enhancing The Practical Dimensions Of The Design Studio Class, Órla Keane

Academic Articles

The Design Studio Environment

The subject of Interior design is a problem-solving methodology, whether it is enhancing the way a building’s space is used, or designing a piece of furniture based on the anthropometrics of the human form. The Technological University Dublin’s BA Interior Design studio class is where these types of problems are generally worked through and solved, with the support of lecturers and peers. The studio class is also where major long-term design projects are designed, created, visualized, and critiqued.

In addition to equipping students with the appropriate skills and ability to develop a creative approach to solving …
