Opportunities For The Sustainable Use Of The Camel In Qatar, Corby Jayne Elford

Theses and Dissertations

In the course of the modernization of Qatar, the need for camels has greatly diminished; herds have reduced in numbers and are now confined to enclosures. Overall, neglect of this valuable resource means that the camel is threatened with extinction. Currently, there is a need to address problems about sustainable development in Qatar by taking actions such as investing in the existing natural heritage to develop the use of indigenous animals like the camel. Through a review of past and present use of the native dromedary, a new type of sustainable agritourism will be developed that will provide a type …

Coworking, Theodora Doulamis Apr 2013

Coworking, Theodora Doulamis

Theses and Dissertations

Coworking spaces have proliferated in the last several years. They reflect a change in how we work, how we learn and how we connect. Coworking is a story of change. There is a large spectrum of types of coworking spaces. Some are minimal offering only an open room with desks and chairs, while others function as mini-cities. Regardless of the size or scope of a coworking facility, what drives the success is the community. This is an exploration on how design creates community. Through my research, I discovered the importance of the 3rd place in supporting the success of a …

Variations On A Porch, Jillian Chapin Apr 2013

Variations On A Porch, Jillian Chapin

Theses and Dissertations

Davida Rochlin said, “Nobody thought much about the front porch when most Americans had them and used them. The great American front porch was just there, open and sociable, an unassigned part of the house that belonged to everyone and no one, a place for family and friends to pass the time.” The landscape in which those porches existed has changed. Our traditional views of housing and neighborhoods (single family homes with a cul-de-sac at the end) really aren’t the norm anymore. In the last 10 years more Americans have moved to, and are living in cities than in the …

Chair And Table, Risd Museum, Tony Cokes, Rosanne Somerson Apr 2013

Chair And Table, Risd Museum, Tony Cokes, Rosanne Somerson

Channel

Richard Artschwager was a scientist and a furniture maker before becoming an artist. Through a witty transformation of material and scale characteristic of Pop Art, his work considers the relationship between art and everyday objects as it explores ideas about both sculpture and furniture. The exaggerated thickness of the chair and table negates their traditional function: the narrow space between the seat and tabletop make it impossible to sit there. Artschwager’s use of Formica® with a simulated wood-grain pattern raises questions about what is real, fake, or a simulation of something else. In the case of his Exclamation Point, Artschwager …

Exploring The Problem We All Live With: The Motivation And Ambition Behind Norman Rockwell’S Civil Rights Depictions, Kelly Richman Apr 2013

Exploring The Problem We All Live With: The Motivation And Ambition Behind Norman Rockwell’S Civil Rights Depictions, Kelly Richman

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Using Norman Rockwell’s The Problem We All Live With (1964) a Civil Rights-era depiction of the integration of black and white students in 1960, I argue that Rockwell chose to portray Civil Rights themes in order to make an altruistic plea for equality. To demonstrate my claim, I have researched academic sources, journal articles that explore Rockwell’s views and painterly approach to race, and documents of important political events of the Civil Rights Movement. Through this research, I use textual evidence to conclude that Norman Rockwell was genuinely committed to promoting Civil Rights in his work.

A Relationship Of Parts, Jacob Francois Apr 2013

A Relationship Of Parts, Jacob Francois

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Through their actions these sculptures allude to our own bodies. The viewer having never seen such an object, its components take on names: lungs, mouth, appendages, or ribs. Our perception of the object shifts to somewhere between what we are and what it is. This shift in perception allows the viewers to project self upon these sculptures. It is not the physical likeness that we identify with, but their actions. Unlike mechanical tools, these objects serve no purpose. If they were accomplishing a task they would only be machines. The function only serves their existence.

The pumps and valves of …

The Art Of Perl: How A Scripting Language (Inter)Activated The World Wide Web, Norberto Gomez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

In 1987, computer programmer and linguist Larry Wall authored the general-purpose, high-level, interpreted, dynamic Unix scripting language, Perl. Borrowing features from C and awk, Perl was originally intended as a scripting language for text-processing. However, with the rising popularity of the Internet and the advent of Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web (Web), in the 1990s, Perl soon became the glue-language for the Internet, due in large part to its relationship to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the Common Gateway Interface (CGI). Perl was the go-to language for on the fly program writing and coding, gaining accolades from the likes …

From Ashes To Architecture: Memorialization At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Sara Elyse Kaplan

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Buchenwald concentration camp, located in Weimar, Germany, was a place of suffering, cruelty and death during World War II and during the first five years of the cold war. As many were tortured and perished there, it has since become a place of remembrance. Being one of the few concentration camps to not be destroyed by the Nazis before they could be liberated, since its final closure in 1950 numerous memorials have been erected to commemorate the events that took place and the people who fell victim to those events. Following several theorists four of the memorials at Buchenwald are …
