Crossing Over Mediums: Experimentation With Watercolor And Printmaking, Alyssa Spjut Aug 2013

Crossing Over Mediums: Experimentation With Watercolor And Printmaking, Alyssa Spjut

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

My interest lies in creating strong compositions that incorporate color, abstract lines, and shapes. Color is my main focus and I am interested in how the colors in my watercolor sketches translate into my printmaking work and vice versa. The comparison of the more spontaneous and organic way of working with watercolor, in contrast to the printmaking process, which involves strategy and planning, could end in some unusual and unexpected results.

My thesis is based on my exploration of merging or translating my watercolor paintings with my printmaking work. By using and combining formal elements such as line, shape, texture, …

Asian American Art Oral History Project

Artist Bio:

Dan S. Wang is a writer, artist, organizer, and printer who was born in the American Midwest in 1968 to immigrant parents. Dan’s constant concerns are the relationships between art + politics, critical reflection + social action, place + history. His research includes inquiries into the postindustrial cultural politics of the Midwest, letterpress printing as an archaeology of obsolescence, race and difference in the theater of crisis capitalism, and the cultural landscape of postsocialist China.

As a print media artist he primarily uses letterpress printing and hand set typography but avails himself of other media as words and …

Painting Connections, Wesley Miller

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Painting Connections consists of five sections. This includes four essays, one of which introduces my work, and three that explore, at greater length, different influences on my work. The Initial Shock explores how South African contemporary artist William Kentridge has influenced my thinking about art and development of imagery. Daydreams: Learning from Gaston Bachelard and Neo Rauch delves deeper into the roles that …

Tethered, Samantha Jean Dixon May 2013

Tethered, Samantha Jean Dixon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tethered addresses the innate fear of forgetting where an individual's family originates, both physically and historically. Not long after discovering that part of my family was almost completely annihilated during the Holocaust, I produced Tethered as visual documentation of the long-term effects of families of survivors. The exhibition is also influenced by my grandmother's experiences as a Mauthausen concentration camp survivor and my own experiences being raised by a survivor.

The knowledge of the imminent loss of memory initiates an instinct to repetitively record and remember personal history. Numerous memories have been forcefully buried in the darkest recesses of the …

Auras, Adele Ball

Scripps Senior Theses

Auras is a series of illustrations of Carlos Fuentes’s novella, Aura, a horror love story about memory, obsession, desire, corporeality and immortality. Defying narrative conventions, the story is told through second person. You are the protagonist, Felipe Montero, and are employed by a 109-year old widow to edit her husband's memoirs. Inside the pitchblack house, you fall in love with her beautiful and bizarre green-eyed niece, Aura. The gradual discovery of the true relationship between the young woman and her aunt propel the story to its extraordinary conclusion.

The story seems to take place within the confines of the …
