Grand Arabesque, Second Time, Risd Museum, Julie Strandberg, Jeff Hesser May 2012

Grand Arabesque, Second Time, Risd Museum, Julie Strandberg, Jeff Hesser

Channel

Transitional poses such as this one were constant themes of Edgar Degas’s numerous sculptural studies made in wax, wire, and plastilene. Collected from his studio following his death, these models became the sources of small editions cast in bronze, including this one of a dancer posed in a grand arabesque. In the classic ballet position, the dancer bends forward while standing on one straight leg, with the opposite arm extended forward and the other arm and leg extended backward. In the 1890s the British artist Walter Sickert visited Degas in his studio and was shown the wax model for this …

The Persistence Of Vengeance From Early Modern England To Postmodern New York, Dominic M. Sevieri May 2012

The Persistence Of Vengeance From Early Modern England To Postmodern New York, Dominic M. Sevieri

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

As a passing glance at the popular texts of any given period reveals, the subject of vengeance is nearly inescapable; on billboards, websites, and year end lists, revenge represents a curious constant even amid disparate media. This study explores the cultural commonalities that align revenge texts of the English Renaissance and exploitation films of late 20th century America. As in-depth inquiry reveals, numerous ideas and narrative tropes popularized during the Early Modern period are pushed to their logical extremes in these films. The central factor that aligns London during the Renaissance and New York at the cusp of the 1990s …

Perceptions Of The Ordinary, Natalie J. Tobacyk May 2012

Perceptions Of The Ordinary, Natalie J. Tobacyk

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This thesis explores the progression of my work through my graduate studies at the University of New Orleans. I examine the central psychological themes of the human experience. Through painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, I investigate various ways of translating personal and universal experiences into open-ended visual allegories. These psychological narratives are intended to function ambiguously- allowing the viewer to develop their own ideas and responses to the work. Using the figure paired with symbols and also using mass-produced common objects to function as the figure; placing them in ambiguous environments, I juxtapose physical and psychological spaces that evoke …

Nebraska Art Today: A Centennial Invitational Exhibition, James B. Schaeffer May 2012

Nebraska Art Today: A Centennial Invitational Exhibition, James B. Schaeffer

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Anniversaries make suitable opportunities for summing up - appraising past progress and looking forward to a better future. Hence, in Nebraska's 100th year as one of the United States of America, it is appropriate that we trace activity in the arts during pioneer days and the period of expansion, pausing perhaps to offer congratulations for past accomplishments or to wish that achievement had been higher.

Middle Western culture is a transplant and a product of the times. The newly-opened territory offered opportunities for material advancement, and settlers either brought with them an acquaintance with genteel living or a desire for …

Bikeurious: A Transportation Reorientation, Aerienne Russell May 2012

Bikeurious: A Transportation Reorientation, Aerienne Russell

Pomona Senior Theses

Since a young age, I have been interested in bicycling as a form of fun and fanciful recreation, but it wasn’t until the summer of 2011 that a serious shift occurred in my understanding of the bike as more than a mere machine. A spontaneous 700-mile journey redefined my relationship with travel, transcended my notions of transportation, and enabled me to better mediate myself within my environment. In writing about these experiences, I hope to offer some insight into how American culture currently frames transportation and how I hope the construction of a bike positive culture can instill social, environmental, …

Women And Video Games: Pigeonholing The Past, Allison Perry May 2012

Women And Video Games: Pigeonholing The Past, Allison Perry

Scripps Senior Theses

Academic work dealing with the overlap between video games and female representation is limited in both volume and proper research. Most texts agree on three supposed flaws with video games: they alienate female participants, there are no games for female players, and female players cannot relate to female characters. This thesis sheds light on these points, not only citing specific counter-examples, but also showing how many of these issues reflect on a larger societal problems.

A Scenographic Transposition From The Stage To The Screen: An Excavation Of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Jordan Randall May 2012

A Scenographic Transposition From The Stage To The Screen: An Excavation Of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, Jordan Randall

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the distinction between the scenic design of A Streetcar Named Desire’s original Broadway production and 1951 film. Using Streetcar as a case study, I evaluated the differences in the choices made in the scenography of the two mediums as a way to evaluate whether there are inherent differences between theatre and film. I examined the scripts of both mediums and analyzed how the story was transposed and how that transposition affected the choices made by the director and designer in the making of the film.

(Un)Veiled: An Examination Of Conscience, April Dauscha May 2012

(Un)Veiled: An Examination Of Conscience, April Dauscha

Theses and Dissertations

I use the body to investigate the ideas of morality, mourning and mortification. I look towards costume history, traditional Catholic rituals and themes in 19th century literature to feed my obsession with transformation, reconciliation and communication through dress. My making focuses on feminine objects and materials. Lace, veils, undergarments and hair adornment speak not only of womanhood, but also of the duality of human nature. Lace speaks of purity and sexuality, it reveals and conceals, it is humble, yet gluttonous in its ornamental overindulgence; lace is the ultimate dichotomy. I use it as a potent symbol to represent the duality …

I Am Who Am, Ali M. Scattergood May 2012

I Am Who Am, Ali M. Scattergood

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This body of work includes both black and white photographs and a film. In each work, I put my collaborators in an environment consisting of a simple black curtain, to neutralize the space, and a 2 foot by 2 foot glowing orb of light. I asked my subjects to interact with the glowing orb in any way they felt most comfortable. I adjusted my collaborators only to keep them from leaving the frame of my camera. The positions and movements these people produced are both intimate and authentic to themselves. As such, each experience with the orb, captured on film, …

ASAS is open to all public and private high school students and promotes the visual arts as a vital part …

Evocation Of Memory And Place, Colleen Pendry May 2012

Evocation Of Memory And Place, Colleen Pendry

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

My work investigates the inseparability of memory and emotion. Guided by what remain of my mother’s tattered memoirs, I have investigated a place from her past that suggests an intense search which filters through her writings and in tandem with my own visual remembrance. Through the manipulation of materials, technique and space, my work reveals a simple yet complex connectedness to memory and place.

Art From The Outpost, Field Notes, New Territory, And The Invisible Hamster, Dymphna De Wild May 2012

Art From The Outpost, Field Notes, New Territory, And The Invisible Hamster, Dymphna De Wild

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The outpost installations I create reveal my choice to be inventive with mostly found materials that I discover on my walks. Calling myself an artist-archeologist, I write down field notes as I collect my art-bound specimens and make a descriptive inventory for each of the works. I often surprise my viewers (and myself) by creating something fabulously strange and compelling with things that were cast aside. I hope to increase my viewers’ abilities to find beauty in these forgotten and trashed items and to generate an innovative dialogue and an outside-of-the-box way of thinking.

Self / Center, Jason J. Anderson May 2012

Self / Center, Jason J. Anderson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The act of photographing myself has had a profound effect on my personal healing after surviving a suicide attempt in the winter of 2008. Coming to the end of my rope after years of trying ex-gay therapy and countless bullying in the workplace and from others left me with a fragmented self that was collapsing. It was through the reawakening and rebuilding of myself that I began to photograph myself as a means of therapy and closure. My work has consistently dealt with the elements of faith and sexuality and the problems that one goes through in attempting to reconcile …

Domestic Bliss, Carrie D. Spencer May 2012

Domestic Bliss, Carrie D. Spencer

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Domestic Bliss is my ceramic sculpture and mixed media MFA thesis exhibition with supporting written monograph. Through the combination of these works I investigate influences in my life, which ultimately affect the choices I make regarding my role in domestic space. I critically examine illusions of domestic bliss, specifically myths about female domestic roles, emphasizing the impact my grandmother and her hand-made dollhouse have had on my life.

You Are Some Other Thing, Victoria Hoyt May 2012

You Are Some Other Thing, Victoria Hoyt

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

There is only one book I reread on a regular basis. Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson, published in 1980, is a story about drifting and loss and longing, of women existing in the world in an uneasy, awkward way. The idea of living in a house is foreign to the transient Aunt Sylvie and when she suddenly has to take care of her nieces, she manages to bring all her homeless habits indoors. She eats in the dark and sleeps on top of her covers and throws rocks at the neighbors’ dogs. My favorite is her collection of tin cans and …

Convergence, Megan R. Mitchell May 2012

Convergence, Megan R. Mitchell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Fences, doors and windows indicate a point of intersection between inside and outside, public and private. These porous boundaries provide enclosure while also allowing access to an outside world. I am drawn to these divisions in space both as aesthetic and metaphorical objects. They are the point of departure for an exploration of the intersection between real and imagined worlds.

I am fascinated by the ways that my brain filters and interprets the outside world, which then takes root in dreams and the imagination. Certain structures and landscapes hold a specific symbolic power; while completely inanimate, they seem to mirror …

Maidens, Matrons, And Magicians : Women And Personal Ritual Power In Late Antique Egypt., Meghan Paalz Mcginnis May 2012

Maidens, Matrons, And Magicians : Women And Personal Ritual Power In Late Antique Egypt., Meghan Paalz Mcginnis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to a variety of material, textual, and literary evidence, the aim of this thesis is to shed light on the realities – rather than stereotypes -- of an important aspect of late ancient women’s experience: the use of ritual power. Patterns of gender differentiation in late antique Egyptian magic are investigated and shown to be connected to the particular aims to which numinous powers were employed, aims which were in turn bound up with the social roles expected of each sex. The majority of this study consists of a series of case studies of different types …

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell May 2012

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis project was motivated by the premise that a drawing could take on architectural meaning beyond its initial performance as a re-presentation of an architectural idea. Initially, there existed the goal to create a drawing that was architecture. In the creation of a process wherein the drawing is the research, however, there comes an understanding that a drawing may never be literal architecture; although, the means by which the drawing is created might be architectural, or at the very least, speak to ideals which are fundamental to the creation, to the process, of architecture itself.

Designing An "Information-Experience" Using Creativity Science Theory And Tools, Stephanie Belhomme May 2012

Designing An "Information-Experience" Using Creativity Science Theory And Tools, Stephanie Belhomme

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

An “information-experience” encapsulated by a technological/digital audio-visual tool presents data and potentially meaningful information to prompt actionable knowledge concerning: “unspoken creative process elements;” their profound impacts on both how well our “physiology of creativity” functions; but also on how well foundational creative thinking and behavioral prerequisites (energy, motivation, imagination, and ownership) are leveraged.

The product: 1) introduces the user to one component of the CPS (Creative Problem Solving) Facilitation Process - Exploring the Challenge; 2) features a content specific component which prompts exploration of the many correlations between societal, organizational / community, human physiological / behavioral data, and the direct …

"Threads Of Belief", Erum S. Javed May 2012

"Threads Of Belief", Erum S. Javed

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

As the needle pierces the fabric, the thread finds its way. As the needle lays its rhythmic path, the thread follows the needle, creating a specific sound and pattern. The needle and the thread together create something new or mend something old. As an artist I have found my direction, and sensitivity, the same as the thread that finds its way by filling and tying the spaces between other threads in the fabric. As I draw the point through every stitch, I am drawing a thought, a moment, an expression from past and present. I seek a thread, a theme, …
