Schmucker Art Catalogs
In Ronald Gonzalez’s latest series of sculptures, old leather satchels, small antiquated appliances, dulled tools, bicycle handles, shoes, a fencing mask, an accordion, a bicycle seat, a toaster and helmets, among other various found parts and outdated detritus are combined to evoke the heads and torsos of human-like forms. The viewer identifies the components at once as what the objects literally are as well as the specific body parts they figuratively describe. As such, his art calls for an exercise in perceptual shifts that allow for more than one visual interpretation. While some objects are manipulated, others are left intact, …

Lisa Blas: Meet Me At The Mason Dixon, Shannon Egan, Miguel De Baca
Schmucker Art Catalogs
The Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College is extremely pleased to mount the remarkable series of paintings, photographs, and mixed-media installation by contemporary artist Lisa Blas entitled Meet Me at the Mason Dixon. This exhibition is an official part of Gettysburg area’s 150th Commemoration of the American Civil War as well as Gettysburg College’s Kick-Off event for this significant anniversary. Gettysburg provides an especially appropriate backdrop for the exhibition, as the artist took the history of this “hallowed ground” and its current resonances as the subject of her work. Blas traveled the Gettysburg National Military Park, as well as to …

Exhibit Catalogues
This exhibition and catalog have had the close cooperation of the artist, Jim Starrett, to whom must go the first thanks. His professional experience and dedication as an artist and teacher has helped shape this exhibition. Brian Mains' design of the catalog and his essay contribute valuable perspectives for our audience. Starting with "Impersonations: Scott Greiger" in 2007, then "Bobby Ross: Drawings" in 2010, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art began a tradition of presenting ideas and objects that stimulate discussion, challenge the audience, encourage open-mindedness and expand perspectives.

Taking Sides, But Who’S Counting? The Decagonal Tomb Tower At Maragha
Taking Sides, But Who’S Counting? The Decagonal Tomb Tower At Maragha
Textile Research Works
Lu and Steinhardt introduced the term “girih tiles” to describe the set of equilateral polygons that structures a colorful two-dimensional decagonal tiling on the Darb-e Imam in Isfahan, Iran (1453 CE) with distant roots in the five-fold symmetries articulated in brick on the Gonbad-e Qabud, a tomb tower dated to the late 12th century CE located at Maragha in western Iran. Their work seeks to establish the early existence of quasi-crystalline tilings long before such means of covering the plane were understood mathematically in the West. Questions remained unanswered as to whether those who constructed these monuments were aware of …

In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde
In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde
Undergraduate Review
Strong design solutions are rarely arrived at by chance and are often inconceivable without an evolutionary process of ideation. Carefully crafted messages that take into account how a reader interprets an image demand the skills of a designer who is in a sense a translator, visualizing abstract concepts in concrete form. My inquiry revolves around the process of representing a salt shaker through a series of visual studies using diverse methods of expression such abstraction, reduction, and stylization. The intention was to investigate the question; What are the limits and possibilities of visual expression in the representation of a simple …

Stealing Horses And Hostile Conflict: 1833-1834 Drawings Of Mato-Tope And Sih-Chida, Kimberly Minor
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
The first documented Native American art on paper includes the following drawings at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska: In the Winter, 1833-1834 (two versions) by Sih-Chida (Yellow Feather) and Mato-Tope Battling a Cheyenne Chief with a Hatchet (1834) by Mato-Tope (Four Bears) as well as an untitled drawing not previously attributed to the latter. These images were produced and collected during the winter of 1833-1834 when the German Prince Maximilian of Wied and artist Karl Bodmer resided at Fort Clark in North Dakota. These drawings remained with Prince Maximilian’s estate until they were placed on long term loan …

An American Taste: The Rohman Collection
An American Taste: The Rohman Collection
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
The Rohman name has been synonymous with the artistic an cultural life of Lincoln and greater Nebraska for decades. It can be seen on buildings and projects throughout the city and state, from Opera Omaha and the University of Nebraska- Lincoln opera program to the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney and Lincoln's own Meadowlark Music Festival. In summer 2005, the Rohman's were the first family to be honored with a named gallery at the Sheldon Museum of Art. But the Rohman's have also enriched the region's cultural heritage in less visible ways too numerous to count. An American Taste: …

Decisive Line Drawings By Dan Howard, Christin J. Mamiya
Decisive Line Drawings By Dan Howard, Christin J. Mamiya
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
In mathematics, a line is the geometric figure formed by a point moving along a fixed direction, and its major property is that it is one-dimensional. In art, however, line has much more than a single dimension. Lines are mutable and chameleon-like in character-they can be soft and seductively flowing, agitated and emotionally loud, or passively descriptive. Line also serves as the fundamental element of most drawings. In this exhibition, Dan Howard reveals his continuing fascination with, and mastery of, line. Composed not only of charcoal, graphite, and pen-and-ink drawings, but also of oil paintings, this array of works showcases …

Messaging: Text And Visual Art, Sarah Feit, Jorge Daniel Veneciano
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Messaging: Text and Visual Art explores the use of language in art. Text in art mirrors the language of our daily lives, drawing on newspapers, advertisements, and personal stories. This exhibition focuses on how artists since the 1960s have used text in their work The term "messaging" in the title evokes changes in communications that have occurred in recent years. The technological advances that have been underway since the 1990s not only brought about unprecedented changes in the fields of science and industry, but they are also transforming our language.
"Messaging" has become synonymous with technology-a term used to describe …

New Material World: Rethreading Technology, Sharon L. Kennedy
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
New Material World: Rethreading Technology highlights ten contemporary textile artists from Canada, Denmark, Japan, South Korea, and the United States, who engage modern technology either by employing or studiously resisting it in their work. The exhibition explores ways in which some artists utilize technology as a tool to expand their design capabilities and others use it to further their cultural, political, scientific, or social interests. Technology aids in planning and implementing artwork, allowing artists more time to explore new creative ventures. Modern exchanges of information facilitate collaborations between artists and industry. Although technology has benefited many textile artists, others find …

Better Half, Better Twelfth: Women In The Arts Collection- Part Ii
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
This reinstallation of the permanent collection galleries continues Sheldon's focus on American women artists, The fact of women's historical exclusion from the art world provides a basis for our exploration, In a 1971 essay, art historian Linda Nochlin famously asked, "Why have there been no great women artists)" She detailed various exclusions women suffered-from working with male nude models, hence from apprenticeships, then art professions and academies, to which we add commercial gallery exhibitions, art criticism, and art history. Over the centuries, this vicious cycle has shaped the current phenomenon: the predominance of male artists in museum collections.
The expression …

The Effects Of Seductive Details In An Inflatable Planetarium, Sean Gillette
The Effects Of Seductive Details In An Inflatable Planetarium, Sean Gillette
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Astronomy is becoming a forgotten science, which is evident by its relatively low enrollment figures compared to biology, chemistry, and physics. A portable inflatable planetarium brings relevance back to astronomy and offers support to students and educators by simulating realistic astronomical environments. This study sought to determine if learning is improved in an inflatable planetarium by adhering to the design principles of the cognitive theory of multimedia learning (CTML), specifically the coherence principle, in an authentic classroom. Two groups of 5th grade students of similar ability were purposefully assigned using a 1-teacher-to-many-students format with mean lesson lengths of 34 minutes. …
