Using Inexpensive And Simple, Yet Versatile, 3d Software In The Construction Of Complex Geometries In Art And Design., Tim Nøhr Elkær
Nordes Conference Series
Artist and designers are currently overwhelmed with all the different brands of 3D software, and several of the most promissing new approaches to parametric design expects the artist/designer to get deeply involved with scripting, or a kind of visual programming, to actually benefit from the new paradigms in the design process. Having participated in this workshop dealing with 3D, curves and surfaces “first-hands”, the participants will achieve an indepth understanding of some of the design methods the simple 3D computer software has to offer, and fully appreciate the exquisite work of Gaudi/Burry.
Developing Knowledge For Design By Operationalizing Materials, Anna Vallgårda, Cecilie Bendixen
Developing Knowledge For Design By Operationalizing Materials, Anna Vallgårda, Cecilie Bendixen
Nordes Conference Series
There is a material side of design that we cannot address through the studies of use and social practice—the properties and potentials of materials, forms, and structures must be explored through another kind of studies. Based on two cases of experimental design research we analyze of what such studies could consist—how we can operationalize material objects by engaging them in situations that give us access to their properties and enable us to explore their potential.
Social Navimation: Engaging Interfaces In Social Media, Jon Olav Eikenes
Social Navimation: Engaging Interfaces In Social Media, Jon Olav Eikenes
Nordes Conference Series
Social media are now an integrated part of culture and digitally mediated social activities. Screen-based devices now employ sophisticated graphics including visual movement on a variety of platforms. This article explores how visually dynamic interfaces can enhance social media applications. A socio-cultural view on communication and interaction design is combined with a practice-based research approach incorporating design production with textual analysis. The term social navimation is introduced and applied in the analysis of multimodal interfaces. A set of semiotic resources are identified that should be of interest for the practice and theory of dynamic interfaces and interaction design.
The Discursive Agency Of Productive Ambiguity, Lisa Grocott
The Discursive Agency Of Productive Ambiguity, Lisa Grocott
Nordes Conference Series
This poster is an attempt to visually communicate the findings of a practice-led research study — a study that came to recognize the value of critical discussion provoked by the ambiguous readings of artifacts. Interested in considering how practitioners’ share the outcomes of research, the study was motivated to see the sharing of design research as less about wrapping up and more an invitation for ongoing critical reflection between the designer and audience. Within this context the poster works as a dissemination artifact that asks carefully crafted questions as opposed to presenting closed, definitive findings. This move seeks to engage …
Enacting Design: Understanding Co-Design As Embodied Practice, Kirsikka Vaajakallio
Enacting Design: Understanding Co-Design As Embodied Practice, Kirsikka Vaajakallio
Nordes Conference Series
A growing number of researchers and designers share the ambition to involve diverse groups of actors in design activities. While new approaches arise continuously, there is a need for studies to explore in detail what happens among the participants during collaborative design sessions. The article presents an account of interaction between two participants in a specific co-design session in order to better understand how co- design emerges through the embodied practice evolving between the participants. The analytical perspective chosen, employing interaction analysis of the video-recorded interactions and the re-drawing of bodily gestures, focused the analysis on how the design evolved …

The article seeks to demonstrate how the project contributes to Superflex' profile as contemporary avant-garde artists and how their work has contributed to the field of design. More specifically the article seeks to demonstrate how the FREE BEER project succeeds in establishing a context of meaning that involves a political as well as a business dimension, and which …
Visualizations As Tools For Research: Service Designers On Visualizations, Fabian Segelström, Stefan Holmlid
Visualizations As Tools For Research: Service Designers On Visualizations, Fabian Segelström, Stefan Holmlid
Nordes Conference Series
Service design is a relatively new design field not explored in research as extensively as other design disciplines. One of the distinguishing practices is the extensive use of visualization techniques in early stages of the design process. This article explores what service designers say about how and when visualizations are used in the user research phase of service design projects. Data was collected through 14 interviews with practicing service designers. It was found that all of the interviewees use visualization techniques in their work process, and that these are used extensively in the research phase of service design projects. Visualizations …
Peepholes As Means Of Engagement In Interaction Design, Christian Dindler, Peter Dalsgaard
Peepholes As Means Of Engagement In Interaction Design, Christian Dindler, Peter Dalsgaard
Nordes Conference Series
We present and discuss the concept of peepholes as a means for creating engaging interactions. By peepholes, we refer to aspects of interactive artifacts and environments that utilize the tension between what is hidden and what is revealed to foster engagement. As a foundation for discussing the qualities of peepholes, we outline a pragmatist perspective on engagement, emphasising the reciprocal relation between people, technology, and environment. We articulate peepholes as an example of a concrete means of engagement. Through a range of examples and two design cases, we explore peepholes as a means of engagement and discuss the pragmatist conception …
Design In The Expanded Field: Rethinking Contemporary Design, Malene Leerberg
Design In The Expanded Field: Rethinking Contemporary Design, Malene Leerberg
Nordes Conference Series
The article explores the contemporary condition of design, proposing a parallel reading between a diagnosis of modernist sculpture of the 1960s by art historian Rosalind Krauss and the state of present-day design. Two competing notions of design will be presented and discussed; a broad notion represented by Herbert Simon and the expanded notion of design, and a guarded notion represented by Bruce Archer. Using a structuralist mapping of the field of design, the objective is to rethink contemporary design and dislocate our attention from what design is to how design works.

Designing For Engaging Experiences, David Browning, Mads Bødker, Marlyn Van Erp, Nicola Bidwell, Truna Turner
Nordes Conference Series
This full day workshop explores how insights from artefacts, created during data collecting and analysis, are translated into prototypes. It is particularly concerned with getting closer to people’s experience of shaping a design space. The workshop draws inspiration from data-products resulting from interactions in specific places with the intention of supporting both those who work with integrating understandings of such experiences into design and those interested in the way material provokes ideas and inspiration for design.
Facilitating Teamwork In The Design Process: Repertory Grid As An Approach To Exploratory Inquiry, Anne Louise Bang, Kirsten Nissen
Facilitating Teamwork In The Design Process: Repertory Grid As An Approach To Exploratory Inquiry, Anne Louise Bang, Kirsten Nissen
Nordes Conference Series
By approaching the Repertory Grid as an exploratory design game and drawing on insight in diagrammatic reasoning we argue that this approach is useful in supporting team work in the design process. In this article we draw on two courses inviting textile design students to contribute to the development of the Repertory Grid – originated in psychology as a one-to-one interview technique – into a tool for articulation and dialogue. Especially the concept of eliciting bipolar constructs using the triadic difference – asking how two elements are alike but different from a third one – proves to support in-depth investigations, …
Critical Artefact Methods: Using Provocative Conceptual Designs Within Participatory Human-Centred Design, Simon John Bowen, Peter Wright
Critical Artefact Methods: Using Provocative Conceptual Designs Within Participatory Human-Centred Design, Simon John Bowen, Peter Wright
Nordes Conference Series
In this workshop participants will have hands-on experience of ‘critical artefact methods’. Through practical experience of these design methods and discussion of their underlying methodology, we intend to generate debate about the use of ‘critical artefacts’ (the products of critical design and related practices) within human-centred and participatory design processes, and enable designers to explore how they could utilise similar techniques in their own practice.
Sharks With Arms: Exploring The Transformation From Natural Phenomenon To Innovation Object Via Applied Bionics, Harald Skulberg
Sharks With Arms: Exploring The Transformation From Natural Phenomenon To Innovation Object Via Applied Bionics, Harald Skulberg
Nordes Conference Series
Today, many researchers see nature as an immense resource of inspiration for creativity, enabling engineers and designers to transform knowledge gained from observations -combined with conceptual intentions – into innovation objects. The transfer of technology between natural life forms and synthetic constructs seem increasingly attractive. But what kind of methodology do designers and engineers rely on when transforming a natural phenomenon into an innovation object, using “bionic” principles? This design case investigates some of these design methods.
Hacking A Car: Re-Embodying The Design Classroom, Ilpo Koskinen
Hacking A Car: Re-Embodying The Design Classroom, Ilpo Koskinen
Nordes Conference Series
Traditionally, design has been an embodied practice. However, with recent changes, design has become an intellectualist discipline dependent on analytic and representational techniques borrowed from other fields of learning. This article describes a design class in which industrial design students created and prototyped a concept for an embedded system. In pedagogical terms, the class adamantly pushed the students to use their bodies to understand insights from user research, to develop and understand design concepts, and to construct functioning prototypes.
The Ambivalence Of Engaging Technology: Artifacts As Products And Processes, Cristiano Storni
The Ambivalence Of Engaging Technology: Artifacts As Products And Processes, Cristiano Storni
Nordes Conference Series
In this article, I will discuss several cases in order to explore how technological artifacts engage and are engaged in larger sociotechnical arrangements. I will show how they inscribe a certain relationship between users and designers and a certain level of engagement. At the same time, I intend to show how these relationship and levels of engagement are not intrinsic characters of artifacts per se but rather they are effects that are produced and reproduced within socio-technical assemblages. In this sense, different artifacts entangled within different socio-technical assemblages afford different levels of engagement and different instances of a user/designer relationship. …
What Video Styles Can Do For User Research, Daniela Blauhut, Jacob Buur
What Video Styles Can Do For User Research, Daniela Blauhut, Jacob Buur
Nordes Conference Series
Documentary video is regularly used to support user research in user-centred design, and many researchers are familiar with this medium. There is strong research evidence that video can contribute substantially to human-computer interaction and interaction design. But the question what role the video camera actually plays in studying people and establishing design collaboration still exists.
Engaging Design Materials, Formats And Framings In Specific, Situated Co-Designing: A Micro-Material Perspective, Mette Agger Eriksen
Engaging Design Materials, Formats And Framings In Specific, Situated Co-Designing: A Micro-Material Perspective, Mette Agger Eriksen
Nordes Conference Series
Engaging co-designers in specific situations of co- designing often also means engaging tangible working materials. However, it can be challenging, so rather than seeing it as applying design methods, the article propose applying what I call a micro-material perspective. The practical concept captures both paying attention to the physical design materials, the formats of their exploration and the framings of focus when understanding and planning such specific co-design situations. To exemplify applying the perspective, the article describes and discusses six specific examples of “co-design situations” clustered in three quite well- known types of co-design situations framed for; Exploring Current Use(r) …

Artifactual Relations In Ucd, Mads Bødker
Artifactual Relations In Ucd, Mads Bødker
Nordes Conference Series
This explorative article presents theoretical and methodological implications of User Centered Design (UCD) from a perspective of socio material-relations and a theory of performative artifacts. The process of “asking users” is rarely treated as a design artifact that can be interrogated in and of itself. The article introduces a perspective on UCD as a “material-relational activity”. Thus, through the lens of a failed workshop, the article takes a closer look at the shaping properties artifacts, and how artifacts interact and produce results.

Design At Play: Immaterial Forms Of Consumption, Adriana Ionascu
Design At Play: Immaterial Forms Of Consumption, Adriana Ionascu
Nordes Conference Series
Objects serve mundane needs in many capacities in everyday life: “This is what gives them their ‘soul’...” (Baudrillard, J. 1986). The contexts in which objects are used give many insights on how people live. This article considers a theory of play to comment on user interaction with types of objects that cannot be ‘consumed’. It looks at a ‘problematic of use’, questioning the notion of production.
Are We The Tool?, Rosie Hornbuckle, Tracy Sutton, Clare Qualmann
Are We The Tool?, Rosie Hornbuckle, Tracy Sutton, Clare Qualmann
Nordes Conference Series
In sustainable design, the search for ‘the right tool’ is an obvious starting point, something to tell us – and those we serve – how to do it. Yet a tool, we have discovered, is what it is; useless without prior understanding of the system it is supposed to fix or the outcome it aims to achieve. An engagement with sustainability issues, debates and values are essential if tools are to be used and sustainable design to be attempted.

Body, World And Affordance: Towards Engaging Technological Artefacts For Older Individuals, John Vines
Body, World And Affordance: Towards Engaging Technological Artefacts For Older Individuals, John Vines
Nordes Conference Series
This article addresses the problems older individuals have been observed to encounter when engaging with technological artefacts and how such difficulties may relate to the designers understanding of the normal cognitive ageing process of human beings. This article suggests that these problems may not be the result of limited cognitive abilities of certain older individuals but rather the manner in which designers understand the complex relationship between the mind and actions in the world. The article speculates that an alternative perspective on interactions as affordances that occur between the embodied individual and their ecology may benefit design methodologies deployed in …
A Philosophical Approach To Design: The Design Of Philosophy, Maria De Fatima Teixeira Pombo
A Philosophical Approach To Design: The Design Of Philosophy, Maria De Fatima Teixeira Pombo
Nordes Conference Series
This article is based on my interest of approaching Design from a philosophical perspective, namely from phenomenology and hermeneutics. Considering my contribution in the frame of an exploratory article, I mainly can arise questions and ‘intuitions’ rather than propose answers or solutions. Moreover, my research about this topic is a on going work and the way seems very long and very demanding. By developing such an approach to Design, I believe that it will be also possible to develop a new argument: that what I mean by the Design of Philosophy. Hopefully, this and other concepts will be clarified during …
Haptic Hedonism: Designing Pleasure For The Flesh, Ståle Stenslie
Haptic Hedonism: Designing Pleasure For The Flesh, Ståle Stenslie
Nordes Conference Series
Haptic hedonism is about producing sensual enjoyment through corporal stimulation. Haptic here referes to the sense of touch in all its forms, including proprioception and kinaesthesia, but in particular the cutaneous sensations of tactile pressure (mechanoreceptors) (Paterson 2007: ix). The context of art, design and technology frames this investigation on how corporal pleasures can become an integral part of interactive experiences. The focus on the design of haptic bodysuits relates to questions such as: How can corporal pleasure constitute the user experience? How can the sensations of the body be understood as an artistic and design specific ‘material’? And, can …
