Taking In
This book is our fourth edition of Taking In:...a collection, a celebration really, of the best photography created by the students of The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Students came together in the class, taught by Gretjen Hargesheimer, and dedicated themselves to all facets of this yearly publishing event...including design, fund raising, jury selection, editing, layout, and print production. Taking In: is truly a collaboration of the images, ideas, and talents from all departments at AIB. The concept has always been a simple one...to showcase the artistic diversity and vision of students who incorporate photography in heir …

The Ends And Means Of Public Art Making: A Case Study Of "Public Art" And "Art In Public" In The Portland, Oregon Metropolitan Region, Svetlana Gennadyevna Karasyova
Dissertations and Theses
The subject of public art has been prolifically but narrowly discussed in conjunction with controversies over particular public artworks. To investigate more broadly the complex aesthetic, institutional, social and political dimensions of public art, I examine a pluralistic landscape comprising nine arts organizations in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan region. A neo-Marxist framework defined by David Harvey organizes the case findings into four topics: material practices or public art outcomes; beliefs, values and desires; institutions and their rituals; and power and social relations.
I capture the differences among the arts organizations by portraying them as metaphorically inhabiting unique spaces in the …

Cézanne Among The Artists, Robert Jensen
Cézanne Among The Artists, Robert Jensen
Art and Visual Studies Presentations
Paul Cézanne's association with the dealer Ambroise Vollard made Vollard's fortune and contributed to making the artist famous. How much the dealer was responsible for Cézanne's fame (and the market it generated), however, is open for debate. There is no doubt that three Cézanne shows at Vollard's Paris gallery, beginning with the first, held in November-December 1895, coincided with the sharp escalation in the artist's prices. Other factors, however, also assisted Cézanne's market fortunes-including such landmarks as the purchase of a Cézanne landscape in 1897 by Berlin's Nationalgalerie. Artists, too, contributed at least as much to forging Cézanne's market as …

Librarian Publications
William “Bill” Anthony (1926-1989) was arguably one of the most influential bookbinders and conservators in the US. His impact cannot be measured by his work alone but also by his legacy as demonstrated by all those he trained, many of whom are now leaders in the field in their own right. Lawrence Yerkes’ forward and Helen Ryan’s introduction to the catalog describe not only Anthony’s life and work, but also the emotional bond they had with him and his spirit that touched so many.

Muffin was a newsletter produced in the early aughts by RISD’s Queer Student Union as a student guide to queer culture. The January 2006 issue is the first since the February-March issue from 2004. It was revived by the Straight and Gay Alliance and features a "gay timeline," articles on freshman lesbians, female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary "Mark" Read, lesbians who look straight, why straight people are needed in RISD's Straight and Gay Alliance, a Jewish student's struggle to reconcile his homosexuality with his faith, and cheap and corny date ideas, along with a book review of "Women's Barracks" …

Software-based rules are not automatically normative in virtual worlds. The feature-bug ambiguity always means that the social meaning of the "rules" is subject to negotiation and to political dispute. I illustrate this claim with an analysis of exploits.

For the past decade, Providence, RI, has been the site of a radical underground art scene, giving rise to a multi-faceted, unbridled aesthetic that is as distinct as it is influential. As a celebration of the movement, The Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design is presenting the exhibition Wunderground. The companion publication, Wunderground- Providence, 1995 to the Present features a foreword by celebrated artist and designer Gary Panter, 128 pages of full color illustrations and 4 fold-out gatefolds. Islamic Art: An Exploration Of Pattern, Carol Bier
Textile Research Works
As an historian of Islamic art in the Department of Art History at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I am continually learning as I endeavor to teach my students about pattern. Teaching about pattern in Islamic art has facilitated my own exploration of geometry in ways that also benefits my students. This visual presentation explores the results of a single assignment that pertains to coloring a linear plate reproduced in Bourgoin’s classic work [6], Arabic Geometrical Pattern and Design.

Use Of General Preservation Assessments: Outputs, Karen E.K. Brown
Use Of General Preservation Assessments: Outputs, Karen E.K. Brown
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
This study describes the extent to which institutions implement preservation recommendations resulting from a general needs assessment, including the time to implementation and the extent of program development. Most recommendations are preventive, with less emphasis on repair or reformatting activities. Data indicate that the majority of institutions accomplish recommended preservation actions with no neglected subject areas. Institutions with the highest rates of success spent more staff time preparing for the site visit, and had a longer site visit, compared to the population as a whole. Preparation of a preservation plan does not correlate to an enhanced capacity to implement preservation …
