Heading Out, Bridget Noel Short
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
I consider myself a conceptual artist. My paintings and sculptures revolve around the contours of time - its movement, construction, and meaning. Awestruck by the fleeting feel of disaster and beauty my work maintains a sexy feel that never embodies rigidity, but rather emulates feminine elements. Intrigued by the same psychoanalysis that has grasped the attention of so many artists since the 20th century it is through symbolism and metaphors that my ideas are reached. Seeking the deeper meaning in things my paintings and sculptures try to express the aggregate of what I view as "time." The components and processes …

Journey From Home, Benjamin P. Varela
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
My art Is built on a foundation of personal experiences: First, as a child In New York City and Puerto Rico, and second, as a man learning his craft in universities and workshops in Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas, and Mexico. I categorize this deductive process as the emergence of the personal "Me,” because most artists develop a visual language of signs and symbols that has been shaped by the artist’s family, education, and personal experiences. It is also a deductive process that has shaped the personal “Me” through an analysis of my movement away from pernicious generalities, characterized by living under …

Taking In
This book is the third edition in the Taking In: series. As was the case in Taking In: I and II, the work, dedication, detail, and graphic design is extraordinary and impressive. The work submitted by our students, and selected by our distinguished judges, reflects the eclectic vision, visual intelligence, perception, and promise of a talented student body. During this first year as a class, Taking In: worked through twice as many submissions than the previous years in half the amount of time. The stable class structure allowed a dependable process to support creativity and enabled the students, as artists, …
Fractured Identities: Siblings And Doubles In Video Games, Laurie N. Taylor
Fractured Identities: Siblings And Doubles In Video Games, Laurie N. Taylor
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
In her essay on “Fractured Identities: Siblings and Doubles in Video Games” Laurie Taylor explores how certain norms of video game design – originally derived from technological constraints of code space and processing speed – continue as the narrative parameters of many if not most contemporary video games. Synthesizing approaches from literary studies and narratology, Taylor offers an innovative angle on the fractured identities of doubles and siblings as the narrative correspondence to now largely obsolete technological constraints. Game-play, related to but nevertheless distinct from the literary type of narrative, as Taylor insists, is a key factor in determining what …

Art Of The Astrolabe, Heather Suzanne Campbell
Art Of The Astrolabe, Heather Suzanne Campbell
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The astrolabe is a well known scientific instrument, commonly found in Islamic art collections. Despite its placement in art museums, it does not receive the same examination or discussion as other metalwork. This leads to errors in dating and place of origin when an instrument that lacks a dedication inscription or a signature.
This study places the astrolabe in an art historical context and not a scientific one.
Much literature has been written on this instrument concentrating on the scientific nature of the instrument or as part of a collection of scientific instruments. Its history, function, place in society and …

Symposium on Worship Archive
A brochure for the Space and Spirit exhibit in association with the 2005 Calvin Symposium on Worship.
What constitutes a sacred space or a sacred place? Furthermore, if by definition sacred space is where one meets God, then many other questions beg to be asked. Does God designate this place or do we? Do we set the criteria for sacred place or is it revealed to us? If God is everywhere, are all spaced sacred? How does one move into or experience sacred place?
This exhibition represents a range of responses to such questions by artists throughout the United States, …

One of the highlights of every New Music festival which we attend is the banter that goes on between artists and audiences about what we have experienced together. The Inaugural Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference was a way to formalize these discussions for the 7th Totally Huge New Music Festival of 2005, and it was a privilege to have been able to attend a conference about New Music in the midst of it actually happening. The Conference was opened by the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Communications and Creative Industries, Edith Cowan University, Professor Robyn Quin, and it …

Feeling Flat, Mindy Herman
Feeling Flat, Mindy Herman
Capstone Research Projects
I have chosen to express myself using basic aspects of design; predominantly color, on a two-dimensional surface. The form and movement are also essential in conveying the mood or "feeling" of each piece. Each piece is simple in composition and execution. At their root feelings are raw and basic to everyone. Everyone experiences moods and emotions that are universal to everyone. They may react to them differently, but the feelings are the same.
This, my visceral reaction to color, is what I have tried to capture here. I keep the feelings at their basic, primal meaning by keeping the picture …
