Masculine Women, Feminine Men, And Androgyny: Gender Expression In Ancient Rome, Samuel Cash Apr 2023

Masculine Women, Feminine Men, And Androgyny: Gender Expression In Ancient Rome, Samuel Cash

Student Research Symposium

Transgender individuals are erased from the historical narrative due to little definitive evidence of their existence in language, literature, or the archaeological record. Items like clothing, textiles, and wigs, which distinguished them from cisgender people, are largely lost to time. However, one way that we can view gender nonconformity is through art. Recently, historians recognized that homosexuality in antiquity was common. It took several centuries to come to the consensus that queer individuals existed. Gender identity and the complexity of gender expression in the ancient world is still debated among historians. While historians tend to negate the existence of transgender …

Victorian Architecture In Modern Day Living, Sarah Haslam

The Victorian era was a period between 1820 and 1914 around the time of Queen Victoria’s reign. It was a time when the population and economy were growing, and Britain was the most powerful empire in the world. During this period, Britain was the cultural capital of the English-speaking world. The culture and art during this time were picturesque, rich, and dramatic. Much of Victorian design consisted of decorative details and rich color combinations.Society has shifted to more modern design with clean lines, neutral color schemes, and minimalistic details. Through design senior living facilities can encourage connection, hobbies, and good quality of life. By using research regarding the proper use of natural light, color, and design we can create atmospheres worthy of anyone's beloved family members.

Elementary Education In Ethiopia, Sarah Wiscomb Apr 2023

Elementary Education In Ethiopia, Sarah Wiscomb

Student Research Symposium

In developing and developed countries alike, children do not have access to basic education because of inequalities that originate in sex, health and cultural identity (ethnic origin, language, religion). These children find themselves on the margins of the education system and do not benefit from learning that is vital to their intellectual and social development. Factors linked to poverty such as unemployment, illness and the illiteracy of parents, multiply the risk of non-schooling and the drop-out rate of a child by 2. Undeniably, many children from disadvantaged backgrounds are forced to abandon their education due to health problems related to …

The Body Is Only A Vessel, Victoria Johnson Apr 2023

The Body Is Only A Vessel, Victoria Johnson

Student Research Symposium

The body is only a vessel treats funeral homes less as venues for the exhibition of embalmed bodies and more like vessels constructed to fulfill whatever needs of those left behind, documenting how funeral practices aren’t so much a dance with death but a shuffle around it. By exploring the mundanity of death and the implied tension between the present life and the afterlife, the project visualizes quiet emblems of loss through texture, light, and space. Doors and windows serve as allegories to “the other side,” as impressions of light and shadow demonstrate the delicate balance between life and death. …

When researching the best way to design for a retirement community living center (RCLC) there were a couple specifics I wanted to focus on. The second is how lighting and color of light can effect the health and safety of the seniors living in the RCLC.

Sweet Nothing, Austin Riddle May 2022

Sweet Nothing, Austin Riddle

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

These pots were made as companions for you and your home. A vase for your table, full of freshly picked flowers as you and your partner eat breakfast and plan your day's activities. Large platters and compartment trays to present home-cooked meals with friends on a warm summer evening. Whiskey sippers that nestle in warm hands, topped off as needed from a half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels.

As a maker, I play these moments on repeat in my mind. As a designer, these scenarios direct the formal elements I develop for each piece. Pushing out an exaggerated belly on a …

Visions Of Science: An Art Historical Exploration Of Medieval Scientific Manuscripts, Olivia Brock May 2022

Visions Of Science: An Art Historical Exploration Of Medieval Scientific Manuscripts, Olivia Brock

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The late 16th century saw a new movement in the world of science to push scientific ideas and practice out of academia and into the hands of the layman. No longer were scholars the sole proprietors of science –everyday laborers, craftsman, and artists now had practical scientific principles at their fingertips that they could incorporate into their professions. This new spread of science was facilitated in several ways, including the publication of books incorporating detailed, explanatory images, new utilitarian instruments, and public lectures. Though science was disseminated through a variety of means, I have been particularly interested in the ways …

Personality Based Career Exposure: A Poster Series, Abigail Evans Apr 2022

Personality Based Career Exposure: A Poster Series, Abigail Evans

Student Research Symposium

The idea behind this project is to create a poster series that challenges students to begin thinking and exploring their future in a low pressure way. If the educational system begins introducing ideas of different career paths earlier on, will the transition from late-high school to higher level education and real life be more empowering for students? While this may seem simple, many curriculums deflect different ideas of career decisions until students reach approximately 17-18 years of age or older. This issue could be resolved by posters included in this series passively hanging on a wall for students to contemplate. …

Memento Mori Photography Exhibition, Hailey Larson Apr 2022

Memento Mori Photography Exhibition, Hailey Larson

Student Research Symposium

Artists Statement: I am an artist because art and photography allow me to escape the reality of life and imagine something new. It allows me to see past my own life and into someone else's, whether it be past, present, or future. As a deaf person, I grew up only experiencing half of the world's sound, forcing me to rely heavily on my vision and piece together life around me through visual storytelling. It’s why I think photography piqued my curiosity from such a young age. Because to take a picture is to capture a piece of reality. As I …

Historic Buildings: The Impact On Sustainability And Design, Sierra Stuart Apr 2022

Historic Buildings: The Impact On Sustainability And Design, Sierra Stuart

Student Research Symposium

Historic districts or buildings are commonly found in many cities or towns and are often associated with a charming feel, but there is so much more. They hold hidden values and stories that play a role in each space. Historic buildings greatly impact sustainability by reducing material consumption and energy that could have been used to tear down a building and build a new one. Creating a sustainable space may look like restoring windows, adding insulation, and specifying durable furniture and furnishings with the space. When historic buildings are designed with a careful and knowledgeable mind, they can add to …

For The Love Of The Game: A Deeper Look Into The Rise Of Women's Hockey, Kylie Larsen Apr 2022

For The Love Of The Game: A Deeper Look Into The Rise Of Women's Hockey, Kylie Larsen

Student Research Symposium

In my research, I wanted to look into the history, culture, and stereotypes surrounding women's hockey and push the boundaries of this information by exploring a new aesthetic and design for the sport. I considered personal experiences female players have had with misogyny in a male dominated sport, bias' in designs for uniforms/locker rooms/equipment/fan apparel/etc, and historical moments like the 'pay deal' agreement'. All of these different things played a part in the designs of my deliverables in one way or another. This new research based aesthetic approach better represents women's hockey history and its growing, hopeful future.

Mid-Century Modern: Revitalized And Thriving, Wyatt Koyle Apr 2022

Mid-Century Modern: Revitalized And Thriving, Wyatt Koyle

Student Research Symposium

The Mid-Century Modern style of furnishings and design originated in the 1940's and was short lived as other trends quickly took its place. Nowadays however, we are seeing this style resurface and return in force. It no longer applies only to furniture, but has spilled over into other areas of interior design as well. After personally observing this in both educational and professional projects that I contributed to, my interest in the style and its future has grown. The main questions that can be asked are: 1) Is the Mid-Century Modern style that we see today the same as the …
