An Exploration In The Use Of Plastics And Ceramics For The Creation Of Combined Media Sculptures: An Abstract Of A Thesis, Peter J. Deneen
An Exploration In The Use Of Plastics And Ceramics For The Creation Of Combined Media Sculptures: An Abstract Of A Thesis, Peter J. Deneen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis is a result of the creation of sculptures combining the media of clay and polyester resin. The malleable and earthly qualities of clay, juxtaposed with the controlled and polished forms of the cast plastic was my major interest. Light reflecting and refracting through the plastic is complemented by the light-absorbing qualities of fired, unglazed clay.
Casting In Sterling Silver Using Models Made From Expanded Polystyrene, Ardith J. Hoff
Casting In Sterling Silver Using Models Made From Expanded Polystyrene, Ardith J. Hoff
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this thesis was to explore some of the possibilities and limitations of casting items in sterling silver using models made of various types of expanded polystyrene. The text includes historical and background information. Uses made of similar material by sculptors and in industry was discussed. The traditional lost-wax process which was adapted for use with the expanded polystyrene models was explained. It was not the intent of this study to show that expanded polystyrene should replace wax as a model making material nor that it is in any way a superior material to work with. On the …

The purpose of this study was the design, development, and evaluation of a coordinated software-hardware system designed to provide instruction in the basic skills and knowledge required to successfully operate the IBM Selectric Composer. More specifically, the purpose was to develop a software packet designed around the LearningActivity Package concept, and to place these materials in a study carrel with all the necessary equipment including the IBM Composer. The study carrel (hardware), the Learning Activity Packages (software), and the IBM Composer (three dimensional activities) were coordinated into a total instructional system. An instructional system of this nature was desired because …
Exploration Of Ceramic Sculpture, Ronald Lewis Hahlen
Exploration Of Ceramic Sculpture, Ronald Lewis Hahlen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The problem was the creation of ceramic sculpture. This was an area I had not explored very much. When I did explore the sculptural range of clay it was difficult to express myself. Slab construction was the first method of exploration into clay sculpture. With this method I could not acquire the shapes necessary in my sculptures. But this slab construction lead me into casting of objects. Airplane models were the final objects to be cast. Slabs of clay were pressed into these airplane casts. These airplane shapes were then assembled and fired in a kiln. To complete the sculpture …

Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait
Three Illustrators: William Blake, George Cruikshank And Maurice Sendak, Patricia Twait
Graduate Research Papers
Children's books have been a source of delight to them; they have evoked both tears and laughter from young audiences. The illustrator has come to be a partner in the creation of hooks for children. The term children's literature now includes the efforts of both illustrators and authors. It was not always so. For many years children read adult books because there was no such thing as a storybook for children. When they came, the books for children were dull fare. They were moralizing with few, if any, illustrations.
Gradually illustrators began illustrating books specifically for children. The literary content …
Desolation Row: Paintings And Collages, Robert Keith Courtney
Desolation Row: Paintings And Collages, Robert Keith Courtney
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The thesis consists of three paintings, ten collages, and an accompanying paper. The collages illustrate the ten verses of the song "Desolation Row" by Bob Dylan (from the album Highway 61 Revisited, Columbia Record Company Cl2389, 1965.) The paintings, Self Portrait, Studio, and Window, attempt to illustrate or describe, without direct reference to the song itself, the state of mind of the singer of "Desolation Row," The paper briefly discusses the personal importance of the song to me, and describes some of my working methods.

Experiences In Scale Of Sculpture For Architectural Sites, Maurice Lee Anderson
Experiences In Scale Of Sculpture For Architectural Sites, Maurice Lee Anderson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
My recent interest in the use of cubic forms and rectangular solids led to the use of shapes that have a dynamic emphasis through the horizontal and vertical stresses of movement which interact in terms of structural and spatial dynamics. I have organized these shapes around an imaginary vertical axis which tends to produce a stasis or symmetrical equilibrium. Through the medium of photomontage I have created a series of sculptural juxtapositions or interactions between my work and several local environments. An important outgrowth of my creative work has been the mobility in scale that a piece appears to have …
The Wood And Metal Lamination Process In Jewelry Making, Joseph Dean Bolender
The Wood And Metal Lamination Process In Jewelry Making, Joseph Dean Bolender
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The problem under investigation was to combine wood and metal using a lamination process. Research was limited to the area of jewelry making. No previous references describing this process could be found. The technical considerations found necessary to successfully use the lamination technique were as follows: 1) Epoxy glue, a resin and a catalyst, is required; 2) the metal surfaces must be roughed up with emery paper to allow for a stronger wood to metal bond; 3) a backing of metal or wood is necessary on large pieces to provide adequate strength; 4) wood and metal parts must be clamped …

Photographs of these three works are given for visual consideration by the reader. The original works are …
Eight Cone Six Glazes For The Electric Kiln, John D. Coiner
Eight Cone Six Glazes For The Electric Kiln, John D. Coiner
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis is concerned with the development of eight, cone 6 (2232° F) ceramic glazes to be used in an electric kiln. These glazes were developed from a scientific approach in which the basic formula was calculated on paper. From these base formulas a trial and error approach was taken in which the basic chemicals were then adjusted until the desired esthetic quality and necessary firing dependability were achieved. The eight glazes presented in the thesis provide a wide range of characteristics which make them versatile for use by the craftsman, and also provide base glazes for further investigation by …
Seven Paintings: A Personal Search For An Ethical Consciousness, Dennis Myron Dake
Seven Paintings: A Personal Search For An Ethical Consciousness, Dennis Myron Dake
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Success as an artist is dependent on the development of an ethical consciousness. The seven paintings which make up the thesis may reflect this awareness or ethical consciousness. The written comments are included to supplement and amplify the information communicated by the seven paintings of the thesis. The values that make up an ethical consciousness are not absolute, they are constantly being sought. This writing deals with that continuing search. Ethical consciousness is described here as consisting of three basic elements; appropriate attitude development, predisposition to accept the adventure of exploring the unknown, and sensitivity in dealing with all aspects …
A Personal Solution To The Problem Of Color In Painting: Minimal Or Absent, Charles A. Frelund
A Personal Solution To The Problem Of Color In Painting: Minimal Or Absent, Charles A. Frelund
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this thesis is to describe verbally a series of personal involvements in painting. These involvements have taken place over a period of nine years and are concerned with seeking solutions to problems which have become apparent by direct and personal experiences. Two major questions which evolved over this period of years form the body of the thesis. The first question was, am I working with a medium which can best reflect my personal aims? The second, could I solve the problems of color within the medium of painting to my own satisfaction? While searching for the answers …

An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham
An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The ancient art of filigree jewelry has almost become a lost art. Today, some of the jeweler-artist-craftsmen believe that much of the filigree being done lacks the originality that could make it a creative art expression. Because traditional filigree designs have been handed down from generation to generation they have become copies of what has been done before. Filigree design, by the definition of being any thread-like decoration, is a linear approach to jewelry. A linear approach suggests delicate work with a lightness and femininity. I have tried to maintain a light airy quality in my filigree jewelry, and for …
A Report On A Creative Thesis Project Concerning The Making Of A Film As A Personal Analogy Of Pottery And Natural Environment, Edwin H. Harris
A Report On A Creative Thesis Project Concerning The Making Of A Film As A Personal Analogy Of Pottery And Natural Environment, Edwin H. Harris
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As long as I can remember, I have thought in mental images rather than in abstract ideas. My mind seems to translate sensations to visual mental images that are seen as either vague, colored shapes or as clearly defined forms related visually to a particular sight, sound, feeling, smell, or taste. When stimulated by the senses, the images appear in rapid succession, sometimes without apparent logical order; they may come and go with varying intensity or may present themselves singly or in groups. These images are always present while I am concious [sic]; they are unlike my dreams which move …
Three Hypotheses Concerning Art Nouveau, Ralph H. Gaede
Three Hypotheses Concerning Art Nouveau, Ralph H. Gaede
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A style of art, known to us today as Art Nouveau, developed throughout the countries of western Europe during the 1890's. As a style, Art Nouveau had its effect in varying degrees upon most of the art forms: architecture, the applied arts and decorative design, painting, sculpture, illustration, bookbinding, printmaking, ceramics, jewelry-making, and other minor art forms. Then, after encompassing this wide variety of creative activity, the forms of Art Nouveau faded and died out just prior to the First World War (1910-1915).
