Larry Bell- Major Works In Glass, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1983

Larry Bell- Major Works In Glass, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

For years, the elusive qualities of Larry Bell's work have been challenging the descriptive abilities of critical writers. Here, for example, is Janet Kutner, writing in ARTS in January, 1976, about Bell's largest work, The Iceberg and Its Shadow:

The zigzag configuration of flat and peaked tips related visually to an iceberg's form and, additionally, lines and planes converged at unexpected points to create strange "apparitions" like the tips of icebergs ....

And this is Christopher Knight, writing in the June 14, 1981 Los Angeles Herald Examiner:

The translucent portions of the glass yield the sense of an …

The Influence Of Mordant On The Lightfastness Of Yellow Natural Dyes, Patricia Cox Crews Jan 1982

The Influence Of Mordant On The Lightfastness Of Yellow Natural Dyes, Patricia Cox Crews

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Wool specimens were premordanted with alum, chrome, copper, iron, or tin mordants and dyed with 18 yellow natural dyes. The dyed specimens were then exposed to a xenon-arc lamp for 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 AATCC Fading Units. The color changes were evaluated instrumentally with a color difference meter and visually by trained observers. Color differences in CIE L*a*b* units, gray scale classifications, and lightfastness ratings were reported. Turmeric, fustic, and marigold dyes faded significantly more than any of the other yellow dyes. However, dyes applied with tin and alum mordants faded significantly more than dyes mordanted with chrome, …

Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli May 1981

Influences On Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing In Lincoln, Nebraska, Madeleine F. Panarelli

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Housing publications of the Bungalow era (1900 to 1930) containing over 1200 illustrated Bungalows and derivations, were compared with 717 photographed representatives in Lincoln, Nebraska. These samples were categorized by 10 types first described by writer Henry Saylor (1911). Interpretations of the style by local builders and architects in Lincoln, Nebraska, were traced to house pattern books, national and local publications, and state and city records, to determine how the style evolved locally. The search led to regional design features of the Bungalow, nearly square forms, and composite types.

Georgia O'Keeffe- An Exhibition Of Oils, Watercolors And Drawings, Norman Geske Jan 1980

Georgia O'Keeffe- An Exhibition Of Oils, Watercolors And Drawings, Norman Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Georgia O'Keeffe has been honored with five retrospective exhibitions in her lifetime: in Chicago in 1943, New York in 1946, Worcester in 1960, Fort Worth in 1966, and New York in 1970. The present exhibition cannot claim the comprehensive representation of her work embodied in those shows, not can it even claim the inclusion of more than a few of her best known paintings. It is, in effect, an exhibition of a somewhat different kind. With a considerably smaller compass it shows what can be considered only a random sampling of her thematic concerns. It shows her most fully in …

The Work Of Al-Hasan B. Muhammad, Die Engraver At Isbahan And Al-Muhammadiyya, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Four Buyid coins in the collection of t he American Numismatic Society, struck between 358-68 H. /A.D. 968-79 at two mints in Jibal province, illustrate a phenomenon unique in the history of Islamic coinage. They concern the status of a die engraver named al-Hasan b. Muhammad. A silver dirham bearing his signature was first noted by George C. Miles and published in 1938. It was at that time the only Islamic coin known to bear the signature of a die engraver. More recently, four additional coins have been located which shed more light upon the career of this artisan. His …

Aaron Pyle (1909-1972), Roy A. Young, Norman A. Geske, Jon Nelson, Jane Anderson

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

INTRODUCTION

In the 1930's when Regionalism was the dominate style in American art, Aaron Pyle studied with one of its leading exponents, Thomas Hart Benton. From Benton he learned a method, a philosophy and a style. Aaron Pyle began each of his paintings with a series of sketches, preliminary drawings and grisaille studies. The first ideas were drawn in small thumbnail sketches less than two inches square. Second, were larger outline drawings on a grid for enlarging. Third, were tracings which were transferred to illustration board in preparation for a monochrome painting, which was the fourth step in the evolution …

The Bryas Palace Of Theophilus, Carol Bier Jan 1976

The Bryas Palace Of Theophilus, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

According to the Continuation of the chronicles of Theophanes the Bryas palace of Theophilus (829-842) was built in imitation of an Arab palace. The present inquiry into its Islamic source offers a new interpretation of the Bryas palace within the context of Middle Byzantine secular architecture and the development of court ceremonial. ::?revious studies have concentrated upon locating Bryas in efforts to determine the extent of Islamic impact on the architecture of Byzantium. The most recent attempt, put forth by Dr. Semavi Eyice, tentatively links the unexcavated ruins at KUyUkyal!, a suburb of Istanbul, with the literary description of Bryas …

Things Seen, Norman A. Geske Jan 1974

Things Seen, Norman A. Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The present exhibition has been organized to focus attention on one of the most flourishing aspects of contemporary American painting, the revival of representational art in the traditional formats of the landscape, the figure and the still life. For the past ten years it has become evident that more and more artists are having second thoughts about the abstract style which had come to dominate the artistic scene within the several previous decades. There are instances of renunciation, a sudden yet deliberate turning away from abstraction toward some form of traditional representation. There are also numerous instances of artists beginning …

Excavations At Korucutepe, Turkey. Part Ii: The Fortification Wall, Carol Bier Oct 1973

Excavations At Korucutepe, Turkey. Part Ii: The Fortification Wall, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Excavations at Korucutepe have brought to light a fortification wall of a type common in Anatolia during the second millennium B.c. The wall had been exposed in places by bulldozing operations for a government farm. Excavation revealed a plan consisting of a curtain wall with a double stone foundation (see fig. 7). Square towers project at intervals where the direction of the wall changes. Adjacent to two of the towers is a passageway, one on the south side of the mound, one on the northeast, leading out from the city. There is no indication of any cross walls, or casemates, …

The Nebraska Art Association, Fred N. Wells

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

In this history of the Nebraska Art Association emphasis has been placed on the development of policies which governed the formation of the collections, the close relationship between the Association and the University, and especially the family interests which have made possible many generous gifts.

It all began with Sarah Wool Moore, as dedicated a disciple of the visual arts as ever wielded a crayon or a camel's hair brush. Miss Moore had come to Nebraska University in 1884 as a teacher of drawing and painting. She had been a pupil of August Eisenmenger, rector of the Vienna Academy of …

American Sculpture, Norman A. Geske Jan 1970

American Sculpture, Norman A. Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The occasion for the present exhibition, the dedication of the Sheldon Sculpture Garden, marks the completion of one of the most important gifts ever made to the University of Nebraska and to the people of the state. The importance of the gift lies not only in the fact of the distinguished building and the art objects which it houses, but also in the fact of their presence as a potential, a place and a situation where the creative spirit, traditional and activist, may find a laboratory, a workshop and an audience.

The garden is first of all a physical enlargement …

Richard Diebenkorn: The" 41 Etchings Drypoints" Portfolio, George W. Neubert

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Throughout his career, Richard Diebenkorn has employed both abstract and figurative compositional techniques. During the period between the 1963 retrospective exhibition of his figurative paintings at the M. H. de Young Museum in San Francisco and 1965, when he began work on his widely acclaimed and ongoing Ocean Park series, he produced a series of over one hundred figurative etchings, among them, domestic interiors, portraits of his wife, table-top still lifes, nudes, and San Francisco Bay Area landscapes. In 1965, forty-one of these prints were selected by the artist and published by Crown Point Press, Berkeley. Entitled 41 Etchings Drypoints …

Paintings And Sculpture From The Collection Of Phillip Johnson, Norman Geske Jan 1967

Paintings And Sculpture From The Collection Of Phillip Johnson, Norman Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

It is altogether pertinent that we exhibit works from the p'rivate collection of Philip Johnson at the Sheldon Gallery, for it was his demonstrated awareness of the arts of painting and sculpture that influenced, at least in part, his selection as the architect for the building. Such an awareness is rare in the profession, particularly an awareness of these arts in their most independent, even their most anti-architectural moods. To be sure Mr. Johnson's collection has, by now, its contingent of contemporary classics in works by Baziotes, Kline, Rothko, and Hartigan, but it should be remembered that they were acquired …

The Art Of Printmaking: Part 1. The Tools And Techniques Of The Printmaker, Norman Geske Jan 1966

The Art Of Printmaking: Part 1. The Tools And Techniques Of The Printmaker, Norman Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

There are four major techniques for making original prints. A brief descriptlon of each of these -- relief processes, incised processes, planographic processes, and stencil processes -- is found in the following paragraphs.

Most art museums today seek the means of reaching a wider public than is actually counted through the turnstile and, as a result, art objects have come to be a commonplace in public places of all kinds, civic and commercial. Art has even taken to the road in circulating exhibitions, art-mobiles and the like. The present series of exhibitions has been organized as an effort in this …

The Irretrievable Opportunity Of Serving The Young, Clifford M. Hardin

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, dedicated on May 16, 1963, is more than another beautiful building given to a university by beneficent donors. It is a contribution to a total cultural development which is taking place in America and one especially discernible in the midland of our nation.

One of the outstanding architectural masterpieces of the Midwest, the Sheldon Gallery is a part of the University of Nebraska's newer emphasis on cultural opportunities for its students and staff and an influence on the cultural appreciation of our region. It gives strong evidence that artistic contributions come from an irrepressible spirit …

The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, University Of Nebraska- Lincoln, Norman A. Geske, Henry Russell Hitchcock

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

A number of years ago I had an opportunity to express myself in anticipation of the completion of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Planning was largely completed at that time and construction was well under way. My thoughts had adjusted themselves to the compromises which are inevitable in such a situation and I was encouraged to believe that all was well with the job at hand. Lest I be guilty of creating the impression that the story has another ending, let me say that the completed building has surpassed our expectations.

In the months of the first year following the …
