Juan Hamilton: Selected Works, George W. Neubert, Barbara Rose Jan 1987

Juan Hamilton: Selected Works, George W. Neubert, Barbara Rose

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

It seems particularly appropriate that the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presents the exhibition Juan Hamilton: Selected Works 1972-1991. It is apparent that Hamilton's encounter with the reductive form of Princess X, 1916 by the 20th Century master sculptor, Constantin Brancusi, had a profound impact and influence on his own mature aesthetic. The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, designed by Philip Johnson, has had on permanent display in the Great Hall this sculpture since its opening to the public in 1963. Though Juan Hamilton was cognizant (prior to his collegiate studies at Hastings College in …

Natasha Nicholson: Anxious Objects, George W. Neubert Jan 1987

Natasha Nicholson: Anxious Objects, George W. Neubert

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Born and raised in St. Louis, Natasha Nicholson spent her first years in a crowded apartment in a housing project, moving as a teenager to an old house only slightly larger. Her three brothers slept in one room, the three girls in the other on the second floor. It was the children's floor, Nicholson's mother rarely venturing up, and the struggle for space and power among the siblings was unrelenting.

Within this crowded, chaotic environment Nicholson had to create her own way to reach for another reality. When she needed a moment away from the life that surrounded her, she …

Woven From The Soul, Spun From The Heart, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Textiles are luxuries and necessities. They are artifacts as well as primary sources which contain a wealth of information about the society that produced them Materials and color represent products available for textile production; structure gives evidence of levels of technological achievement. Patterns illustrate belief and values, frequently offering insight into daily life. The mingling of motifs expresses a kinship of ideas. Textiles, above all, illustrate a culture's freshness and vitality, its flexibility and adaptation to change.

Meaning and Metaphor: Cultural themes occur in both Persian poetry and the textile arts. Hunting, falconry, bird-and-flower studies were popular subjects for poetry, …

Geometric Abstraction In America, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1986

Geometric Abstraction In America, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Precisionism and Regionalism were the dominant styles of the late Twenties and early Thirties; the isolationist and chauvinistic attitudes which encouraged conservative imagery of the American Scene generated scorn for Modernist art. Sounding very like the critics who derided the Armory Show of 1913, Thomas Craven (for example), writing in the New York American in 1936 about A. E. Gallatin's purchase of Picasso's Three Musicians for his Museum of Living Art, set a standard for vituperation:

Rallying around a fallen idol, the vested interests, collectors, nuts and professional esthetes have joined hands in a last desperate campaign to restore the …

Of Steel And Brick And Ordinary Things: The Sculpture Of Carl Andre, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1986

Of Steel And Brick And Ordinary Things: The Sculpture Of Carl Andre, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

64 Steel Square represents Carl Andre's first use of modular units of steel. Dating from 1967, it reflects nearly all of the tenents of Minimalism which Wade Saunders and his generation of sculptors (who are now gaining prominence) have labored to abandon.

Precisely as the title* indicates, the work is a square of steel plates, each measuring, with minor variations, eight by eight inches . Those dimensions, squared, produce both the size and the form of the completely installed work.

The blunt, arithmetrical logic of the work is underscored by the conspicuous absence of the artist's hand: it is not …

Rhythmic Clay: A View Of Jun Kaneko's Process, Daphne A. Deeds Jan 1986

Rhythmic Clay: A View Of Jun Kaneko's Process, Daphne A. Deeds

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

In this diverse age of artistic pluralism, retrospection and cynicism, Jun Kaneko's ceramic sculptures prevail as confirmations of essential constancies. The certainties of man's elemental graphic urge, the determinism of archetypal shapes, and the symbiosis of time and space are all revealed in Kaneko's three dimensional abstractions.

Kaneko employs abstraction, not to transcend contemporary complexities, but to reveal the inherent synchrony of the natural world. From a position of acceptance, rather than control, Kaneko is but one participant in a private conversation with his media. And though this internal conversation is not directed at Kaneko's audience, we partake of his …

Goldberg, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1985

Goldberg, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

This exhibition, the second in the Resource and Response Series, assembles approximately a score of works which span nearly four decades of Michael Goldberg's career as a painter. In so doing, this exhibition also reflects upon perhaps the most fabled chapter in the history of American art: the emergence of the New York School and, with it, the creation of an "independent, self-generating, and specifically American art.'" Here, as for all shows in this series, the intent is not to rival a full retrospective, but to develop a focused response to prominent issues and concerns in the world of contemporary …

American Impressionism, Suzanne T. Wise Jan 1985

American Impressionism, Suzanne T. Wise

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

T he term American Impressionism, when used in the context of stylistic analysis, implies a specific set of definable characteristics, and by extension, a traceable lineage that will fit comfortably in the historical narrative of American art. If one seeks to assert this notion when confronted with an exhibition of American Impressionist painters, the result will be confusion coupled with a healthy dose of skepticism. For unlike their French counterparts, who established a style in close proximity to one another, both geographically and philosophically, American artists arrived at Impressionism from a variety of viewpoints.

Early surveys of American art tend …

This series is a two-fold exhibition program, the first is: Resource and Response which will be a series of small scaled exhibitions in response to current issues and ideas of contemporary American art and artists. These Response exhibitions are to be far ranging in subject and content, but will reflect a regional component. The second part of the Resource Series is entitled Resource and Reservoir and these exhibitions will be drawn from the Sheldon Gallery's important permanent collection and will focus on subjects and themes …

Alice Aycock: The Machine That Makes The World, Alice Aycock

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

"There is a state of free fall where you don't know up, down, left, right, backwards or forwards; they're totally confused. Those seem to me to be the six ways of orienting yourself. What I would like to do is probably just disorient all those sensations. On the other hand, that also can be a very euphoric state; it can be very pleasing and people engage in all kinds of activities which involve this titillation (skydiving, amusement parks) ... What are they all but ways of titillating yourself? They always have to do with whirling in space, for pleasure as …

Before And After, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1985

Before And After, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

The contrast between the appearance of a work of art which has been professionally restored and one which continues to suffer from at least some of the ills which art can be heir to can seem nearly miraculous, or so subtle as to be invisible to the casually observant eye.

The ills are numerous and reflect the fragility of many if not most works of art. Variations in relative humidity can cause a canvas to shrink or expand. Variations in temperature can do the same. With time and continued fluxations, tiny cracks may appear and grow into fissures that cross …

Cubism In America, Donald Bartlett Doe Jan 1985

Cubism In America, Donald Bartlett Doe

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Synthetic Cubism not only synthesized "real" materials with painted/constructed reality, but also synthesized earlier discoveries, permitting objects to seem tangible while forms and surfaces were shuffled in space as thin as gossamer.

World War I ended the joint investigations of Picasso and Braque and dispersed the international community of artists who had gathered in Paris. Excepting Juan Gris and Ferdinand Leger, all of these artists, including the American artists, were on-lookers. Few grasped all of the issues and formal ideas with which Braque and Picasso experimented. Most seized upon an aspect of the style and wedded it to theories of …

Ronald Slowinski, Donald Bartlett Doe, Norman A. Geske

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

This exhibition is the result of a visit to the studio of Ron Slowinski in 1981. Such a visit is the surest test of one's reaction to the artist's work seen on previous occasions only in isolated examples. Such partial contacts are frequently inconclusive, but in the instance of Slowinski the impression made was sufficient to create an appetite for more. The several hours spent looking at the accumulated work of four or five years was exciting to say the least and impressive to the degree that I came away from the experience convinced that here was an artist who …

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Feb 1983

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.
