Move In The Internet, Jennifer Ziyuan Huang Jun 2021

Move In The Internet, Jennifer Ziyuan Huang

Masters Theses

We work in front of computers and consume digital entertainment our leisure time. Our bodies need frequent consumption of varied movements for essential physiological processes, while screens cause prolonged stationary. Our bodies need good alignment to function well for a lifetime, while devices and chairs cause bad alignments. The goal of my thesis is to design objects to encourage body movements and good body alignments throughout the day. I hope to design for a sustainable state of well-being.

For my first project for the thesis, I looked into sitting. I designed a chair that allows people to switch between kneeling …

Indefinite Origin: Decentralizing Knowledge, Tong-June Moon Jun 2021

Indefinite Origin: Decentralizing Knowledge, Tong-June Moon

Masters Theses

The RISD Digital Commons notes that “graduate education is focused on producing original contributions to a field, based on research and advance practice."

What is collaborative thesis, and what value does it bring to the process?

Indefinite Origin, is a thesis advocating for knowledge to be decentralized and treated as a shared resource. Deviating from a focus on originality, it engages in the creation of knowledge as a collaborative effort. Design flexibility is practiced through intellectual humility, negotiating methodologies and welcoming chance. This thesis explores ideas from Furtherfield’s Do-It-With-Other (DIWO) or Do-It-Together (DIT)4 philosophies that promote synergy around commons5, cultural …

No Winners: Transgender Athletes In Cycling, Max Pratt Jun 2021

No Winners: Transgender Athletes In Cycling, Max Pratt

Masters Theses

Up until very recently, and in many ways still today, the world of cycling has been reserved for those with privilege. Professional racing has found itself in hot water, carrying gender discrimination, transphobia, and elitism throughout its avenues. Those in power are under constant pressure from all sides to make decisions that influence our entire industry.

This work explores the struggles of transgender and gender nonconforming cyclists in the context of competitive racing. Through documentary and design, we aim to bring these conversations to the forefront of the sport, and visualize what the future of cycling may look like for …

A Family Game: Tell The Stories That Shape Us, Zhuoyan Xie Jun 2021

A Family Game: Tell The Stories That Shape Us, Zhuoyan Xie

Masters Theses

There are a lot of books and theories on the market to help improve our communication skills and relationship with others. However, they hardly mention that the fundamental principle behind our relationship to others is how we understand and accept ourselves. The thesis aims to promote our understanding of our own identity and identities of our family members. It is worthy to mention that the thesis is conducted in a Chinese context. The thesis mainly learned from Non-violent communication and theories about identity, especially narrative identity. The deliverables are a set of narrative cards and prompts that can be played …

Kitsch Study And Chinese Kitsch Market, Jiaqi Ellie Liu Jun 2021

Kitsch Study And Chinese Kitsch Market, Jiaqi Ellie Liu

Masters Theses

From the old industrial age to the new information age, the accumulation of capital has led to the monopoly of the assets and technology of large enterprises, and the pressure of the middle class is increasing day by day.

At the same time, informatization has led to a substantial increase in the next round of energy and material needs, and therefore human needs for thinking, physical and emotional needs have also increased. Kitsch can meet the thinking and emotional needs of the public. Therefore, it has become the mainstream contemporary aesthetics.

Kitsch art & design are easier to be loved …

Things That Ignore, Sean Walker Hutton Jun 2021

Things That Ignore, Sean Walker Hutton

Masters Theses

I make landscape and figurative paintings and prints that explore the symbiosis between the sublime and the quotidian. My work is guided by a theory of the sublime that is rooted in divine indifference, the notion that the divine attracts what it initially repels and that absence is presence. Much of my imagery is pulled from a cross country archive of personal photographs and a no-brow collection of film stills. Drawing comparisons between these sources and the ongoing history of landscape, I denaturalize subjects through a painterly appropriation of cinematic sensibilities in order to destabilize a fixed gaze, foster a …

The Beauty Of Collision, Yixuan Pan Jun 2021

The Beauty Of Collision, Yixuan Pan

Masters Theses

As a Chinese artist living in the United States, I’m researching the integration of Eastern and Western aesthetics, as well as the loss of identity that can occur when visual cultures begin to assimilate. My work endeavors to locate the connection between Eastern and Western arts through my own memories and experiences. From the age of five, I have studied calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting with my grandfather, who was a calligraphy professor. Today, I use the shapes of traditional Chinese hand fans as symbols of youth, drawing from memories of my mother and grandmother brandishing the fans to help …

Hard Work / Soft Work, Nicole Schonitzer Jun 2021

Hard Work / Soft Work, Nicole Schonitzer

Masters Theses

I have never eaten a blancmange, or seen one in the flesh, or even talked to anyone about having eaten one, but the Blancmange, I’ve decided, is the mascot of my thesis. (You might say, “why does a thesis need a mascot?”, but I’ll tell you right now, this is already a better thesis for having one.) A pastel blob of a dessert originating from medieval Europe, it’s a gelatinous creamy mixture, chilled in a mold, that you can put nuts in or serve with cookies. It looks terrible, really truly. I mean, it looks great, the pinnacle of fancy—decked …

In The Muck And The Mire, Orli Swergold Jun 2021

In The Muck And The Mire, Orli Swergold

Masters Theses

At the core of my practice lies my fascination with my body; how I exist in relation to others and my surroundings, how much space I take up, how close I am to others, how much distance exists between us. I am interested in intimacy and bodily contact, which I explore through objects that bridge the gap between human embodiment and otherness. My works, made out of paper pulp, simultaneously stimulate a hyperawareness of one’s own body and a dissolution of the self. Their human scale immediately places them in relation to the viewer and creates space for empathy. As …

Illustration Course Work & Materials

"These essays were were written and illustrated by students at the Rhode Island school of Design in February, 2021. Their perspectives are entirely personal and reflect their efforts within a 5.5-week fused studio/seminar course that was centered on the Sixth Mass Extinction and how biodiversity is changing because of humans. Discovering that science communication is more than delivering just the facts, students were invited to research a topic of personal interest that is relevant to human impacts on biodiversity. Through analysis of data and other scientific information, each sought to synthesize their research and opinions on their topic through a …

It Is What It Is, Richard Kraft, Special Collections, Fleet Library

Artists' Books

5 volumes : chiefly color illustrations,. "On inauguration day January 20, 2017, artist Richard Kraft began issuing Donald Trump colored cards, just as a soccer referee penalizes players who transgress the rules and code of conduct. For four years, Kraft scoured the news and Trump's Twitter feed every day, notating and assigning each of Trump's transgressions a colored penalty card (at first, yellow and red, as in soccer--and then Kraft devised magenta, purple, and crimson for ever-escalating offenses). Kraft issued almost 10,000 cards to Trump, half of them in 2020. In this set of five artist's books, totaling over 1600 …
