How do you imagine alternatives if you either don’t have the space for it, or are being restrained from imagining? Faraoyść - the shared emoLon of joy liberated from systems of oppression, which creates a portal towards possible new realiLes - is a method that facilitates the imaginaLon of alternaLves to our current reality currently determined by what is known, what is assumed, and what stops one from imagining. We created and developed tools to culLvate and evoke faraoyść that involved poetry wriLng, culturally-specific storytelling, music, co-design, and the acLon of naming the self and objects. These tools resulted in …
Navigating A Bipoc Identity Through Solidarity Design Labor, Dave Pabellon
Navigating A Bipoc Identity Through Solidarity Design Labor, Dave Pabellon
Pluriversal Design Conference Series
This short paper uses experiences as a design practitioner, an activist, and a 2nd generation immigrant as a means to understand and define “good work”, and how that work can assist in navigating one’s identity. The “good work” is self-defined by the author as labor produced in solidarity with communities in need of support. Through the obsession with work, albeit “good work”, one can ultimately lose sight of their own identity through assimilation. Or at the very least, be forced into a work-first lifestyle where constant code-switching is necessary, which forces the siloing off of each identity lens, never to …

This research responds to the eventual (and very necessary) process of dismantling and unlearning the white Australian culture in favour of pluriversal, decolonial, and relational ecologies. However, the ways in which we go about collectively re-imagining this future is unclear. This research documents my own personal journey to explore and integrate my Celtic ancestry so that it can be a source of wisdom and inspiration for assisting myself and other white people for co-creating regenerative and pluralistic futures alongside indigenous and culturally diverse migrants on the lands of so-called Australia. This study is contextualised through a brief reflection on an …
Staying Diasporic: Centering Migrant And Diasporic Ways Of Being In Design, Yénika Castillo Muñoz
Staying Diasporic: Centering Migrant And Diasporic Ways Of Being In Design, Yénika Castillo Muñoz

Migration and diaspora are phenomenons that are continuously shaping the world, and that are caused and informed by colonial structures. The communities in diaspora are held together by particular ways of imagining and relating with the homeland, the host culture, and themselves, touching back into the local. In the experience of migrating and becoming part of a diaspora, our identities shift, as we enter a state of tension between total assimilation and resistance, questioning our national hegemonic values and ways of being. As a designer with migrated roots, I would like to share some experiences and thoughts about working in …

Narrative-Based Human–Artificial Collaboration: A Reflection On Narratives As A Framework For Enhancing Human–Machine Social Relations, Anca Serbanescu, Mariana Ciancia, Francesca Piredda, Maresa Bertolo
Pluriversal Design Conference Series
This paper aims to reflect on human–artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration in cultural production and depicts the collective socio-cultural imaginary focusing on humans’ intrinsic vulnerabilities related to AI systems, which are often perceived as a way of reshaping human presence within contemporary society. Abandoning an anthropocentric perspective, contemporary ecosystems should include non-human and AI systems. Our hypothesis states that their interactions could be reshaped by adopting a narrative framework. Since humans are social animals, if the power of stories is used for embracing plurality', sociality can be extended to include AI systems. Considering such premises, relationships between humans and AI may …

Relating the concepts of value-sensitive design to decolonial theory, we will describe our attempts to activate resistance to the foundations of modern technicity through a game called Reimagining the Now, which we designed for the Digital Democracies Institute in Vancouver, BC, Canada. We argue that, as digital technologies become embedded in every facet of society, any hope of a digital democracy requires sustained public discourse, imagination, and action that goes beyond an understanding of how digital technologies work, towards a comprehension of the value systems, contexts, and consequences of their creation. To do this we devised a custom card set …
Story-Making: Re-Imagining Possible Futures Through Collaborative World-Building Approaches, Jane Turner, Manuela Taboada
Story-Making: Re-Imagining Possible Futures Through Collaborative World-Building Approaches, Jane Turner, Manuela Taboada
Pluriversal Design Conference Series
This paper discusses insights from a collection of workshops where participants were invited to engage in active imagination and play with world-building and collaborative story-making through activities inspired by improvisation and tabletop role-playing games (TRPGs). The purpose is to explore ways of dismantling the ingrained habits of current design methodologies; unlearn normalized ways of thinking and re-construct shared approaches for designing, making, rethinking and reframing problems. To achieve this, the authors interrogate three of the workshops seeking patterns and characteristics that might offer opportunities for tools that are less encumbered by the legacies of their western modernist colonialist roots. We …

In this paper I propose land-based design methodologies as a way to un-design the colonial space of the University. I contextualize land-based pedagogy within an embodied practice and thus I address my own positionality as a LatinX Queer Brown Mestiza Woman. In the context of a course that I developed called Re-reading Place, I present a methodology that I define as Land-bordering, which captures the transmission of memories and lived experiences as they connect to the land and the intersections that influenced that experience. I propose a design process of dismantling the colonial structures of modernist design that exacerbate the …

The phenomenon explored in this research is participatory site-specific performance art, themed around eco-violence, climate change and water pollution, which is discussed within a framework of the decolonisation of knowledge through arts-based action research and a pluriversal approach to participants’ experiences. The two case projects were conducted with youth and children aged 6-13 y.o. from Kaunas, Lithuania. The data gathered during the two case projects include photo and video documentation and my notes. Via the examples of the provided cases, the present study explores how the transcorporeality of the space and site of a participatory site-specific performance can be used …

Rearticulaciones: Desmantelar Y Reensamblar El Futuro-Pasado Desde La Perspectiva Del Diseño Del Sur, Fernando Alberto Álvarez Romero

Situated in the highlands of Chiapas, southeast Mexico, this research seeks to contribute to decolonising textile artisanal design and the recogni:on of Indigenous design alongside Mayan Tsotsil and Tseltal weavers in search of a fair-dignified life, Lekil Kuxlejal. Using tex:les as sources of rich knowledge and research metaphor, a woven methodological approach is developed by interlacing decolonial theory and design from the Global South. Furthermore, drawing from Indigenous onto-epistemologies such as corazonar, Zapa:smo and Buen Vivir (good living, collec:ve well-being), this study presents a new approach to tex:les as resistance combined with Mayan cosmovision, and is in alignment with the …
A Lesson From Fazal Sheikh’S “Desert Bloom” For Living In A Post-Covid World, Bill Leeming
A Lesson From Fazal Sheikh’S “Desert Bloom” For Living In A Post-Covid World, Bill Leeming

We are told that we can expect to live with an assortment of “new normals” at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are also told that living through the COVID-19 pandemic has made us better able to face longstanding challenges such as climate change and inegalitarian social arrangements. In this paper I reflect on what we are being told by drawing on a lesson I have learned from Fazal Sheikh’s 2011 aerial photographic series to locate evidence of Bedouin villages in the Negev desert in the wake of Israeli campaigns in the 1960s to “make the desert bloom.” The …
Introducing Relationality To Design Research, Jananda Lima
Introducing Relationality To Design Research, Jananda Lima
Pluriversal Design Conference Series
The Design Eurocentric legacy shaped its research practices based on separability and objectification. This paper seeks to reflect on the movement of experimenting and conceiving new methods as the beginning of major changes in the decolonizing design enterprise. The reflection stems from two main concepts: relationality and accountability. By going into the field, embodying other ontologies and epistemologies, I suggest that dismantling assumptions is an enriching and often painful process. It is by embracing uncomfortable positions and by unlearning that designers are able to reimagine design practices for decoloniality. This reflexive exercise is shaped as a conversation between my personal …

In our paper we contrast the idea(l) of an education that aims at community and planetary wellbeing with the current educational reality in South Africa. Drawing on our initiatives to integrate local indigenous knowledges (including use of home language) with the Western curriculum we address the question how to approach educational transformation despite and within the given educational context. We do this through telling our narrative stories as well as reflections on our research project geared towards bottom-up decolonisation. We offer this paper as an invitation to researchers worldwide to engage in scholarly debate around issues on decolonisation.

It is increasingly clear that the sustainable transitions needed to counter climate change depend on lifestyle changes. However, the task of encouraging a shift to more sustainable lifestyles is highly complex. This paper describes an emerging design research method to explore possible pathways towards such sustainable transitions. We describe a living labs-approach based on design practice, developed within [Author affiliation], a design and sustainability research group at [Author affiliation]. We refer to this method as Designerly Living Labs. Based on empirical learnings from four such Living Labs we present eight key characteristics. We then highlight some important aspects that affect …

Incorporating Behavioral Theory In Design Ideation For Changing Sustainability Behaviors, Aysha Alwazzan, G. Mauricio Mejía, Yumeng Xie, Daniel Fischer
DRS Biennial Conference Series
As design research develops, theory is increasingly available for designers. However, there is a limited understanding of how practitioners incorporate theory in activities such as ideation. This exploratory study aims to understand how novice designers respond to and incorporate theory in the ideation phase of the design process. A theory from behavioral economics – nudging – was introduced to the participants while ideating in problems of changing sustainability behaviors. Data collected included focused observations and interviews. Participants appeared to understand some behavioral theoretical concepts, which can be explained in the current pervasive use of human-centered approaches. While there were some …

Founded with principles of equity, freedom and access, public libraries have always served as a cornerstone of democratic values and civic participation. In the context of 21st century transformational forces of globalization and digitization, libraries are also evolving their role from repositories of information and learning, to critical contributors of a culture of care in their communities. In this paper, we present insights from an ongoing collaboration with the Brooklyn Public Library that focused on the library’s current re-entry services directed to formerly incarcerated patrons and their families. Drawing from participatory design and visual ethnographic approaches to inquiry, this study …

Smart textiles are often developed in sports- oriented contexts through technology-driven processes. In the medical context, practitioners themselves also invent and develop technological aids in response to needs that emerge in practice. In these cases, novel technology may be the first driver for design to secure functionality and reliability, but our study shows that these processes benefit from human-centric and empathic design approaches. The project develops smart textiles for infants with medical adversities, such as preterm birth, neonatal infections, or birth asphyxia, collaboratively with medical researchers. Our pilot research illuminates the need to use the interest group’s empathic understanding as …

On a generic level, caring can be described as "everything that we do to maintain, continue, and repair our 'world' so that we can live in it as well as possible" (Fisher and Tronto, 1990). This paper asks how we as design researchers in Scandinavia come to care, for our world and more specifically for the local NORDES community. We do this by describing how we have maintained, continued and added (as a practice of repair) in relation to the most recent NORDES summer school (2018). The summer school invited students to work with tensions between despair, in a site …

What Matters When Turning Utopias Into Material, Philip Hector, Mikko Jalas
Nordes Conference Series
With an increasing number of open laboratories for cultural and technical experimentation in place, questions arise regarding how and with what effects they come about, what they mean to those who partake and how they organize themselves in order to satisfy those involved. Recognizing the way that these spaces reach of alternative technologies and alternative ways of being we conceptualize them as materialized utopias, which are fragile socio-material arrangements. Rather than articulating grand utopian or ecotopian alternative societies, we look at materialized utopias as the gradual tweaking, probing and fixing of things. We elaborate on this with the study of …

Navigating Care In Social Design: A Provisional Model, Eva Knutz, Thomas Markussen, Tau Lenskjold
Nordes Conference Series
The aim of this paper is to show how the value of social design lies in the approach’s ability as a caring practice to foster change for vulnerable groups in society. Yet, to achieve such change, social designers must have a navigational tool that allows them to identify and steer through some of the value conflicts that are typically involved in public service care provision. To substantiate this claim, we rapport from two recent social design projects in the public sector dealing with care within criminal justice and healthcare. Building on these two projects we propose a provisional model for …

Caring For Diversity In Co-Design With Young Immigrants, Dagny Stuedahl, Henry Mainsah
Nordes Conference Series
This exploratory paper will ask questions about how we as co-designers and humanitarian designers engage with the outside and will especially be concerned with dialogues, interaction and knowledge production with young immigrants in co-design processes. We also will ask how we connect the questions arising from the histories of societies that participants bring into the co-design situation, how our practice and co-design understanding can handle cases where we cannot really grasp the complexity when religious, ethnical, personal and political experiences build the ground for collaborations. This becomes especially important in situations where complexity may ruin the co-design process and the …
