Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson was Robert Altman's bicentennial film. Released for the Fourth of July weekend in 1976, the film examines the western both as a national myth and as a commercial entertainment form; indeed, one might see the film's project as an expos? of the ideological functioning of the western, its white male hero, and the Native American in nearly 100 years of American popular culture.

Mary Kelly's gallery size installation, entitled Gloria Patri, was first shown at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum, Cornell University in 1992. Gloria Patri focuses on the issues of heroism, mastery, and war within the context of a pathologized masculinity; that is, on the identification by both men and women with masculine ideals of mastery, domination, and control, and their simultaneous physical and psychological collapse. This crisis of masculine mastery is set against the backdrop of the Persian Gulf War.
An Historical Look At The Negro Baseball Leagues: The Legend Of The Black Knights, Terry Pierce
An Historical Look At The Negro Baseball Leagues: The Legend Of The Black Knights, Terry Pierce
McCabe Thesis Collection
This study hopes to fill in some of the gaps in the history of the Negro Leagues. More importantly though, this research is successful only if the readers can come away with a true sense of what the ballplayers of the era felt and why they played while enduring racism and humiliation.
This study was conducted to pull together the previously written facts and history of the Negro Leagues with obscure oral history and data found through interviews, videotapes, articles, and books from and about those who played and lived during the era.

Various Black Virginians As Told To Daryl Cumber Dance, Daryl Cumber Dance

Shuckin' and Jivin': Folklore from Contemporary Black Americans, published in 1978, derived from fieldwork done far a doctoral dissertation at Virginia Commonwealth University by Daryl Cumber Dance (the only woman named Daryl I have heard of aside from Daryl Hannah). She gathered stories and verses from black Virginians in colleges, senior citizens' centers, and a penitentiary. Though she doesn't bring to the party an editorial touch as enlivening as Zora Neale Hurston's, she has an ear and-unlike far, far too many assiduous collectors of folktales - knows how to capture vocal rhythms on a page.

Sacagawea: A Uniquely American Legend, Donna Jean Kessler
Humanities & Communication - Daytona Beach
In an examination of American texts produced from 1804 to 1989, this dissertation delineates that Sacagawea became a legendary figure because she has exemplified critical elements of narrative traditions recounting the nation's sacred beginnings. As a plethora of works have portrayed Sacagawea as the Indian princess of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, she became an important emblem of manifest destiny. Flexible within its mythic framework, the Sacagawea legend has additionally enabled proponents to confront timely cultural issues, such as women suffrage, taboos against miscegenation, and modern feminism.
Chapter one provides a review of American frontier myths, concepts of sacred mission …

The Development Of A Youth Consumer Culture In The United States In The 1950s, Phillip D. Mccaskey
The Development Of A Youth Consumer Culture In The United States In The 1950s, Phillip D. Mccaskey
History Theses & Dissertations
The 1950s witnessed the development of an important cultural phenomenon in the United States, the result of the demographic increase known as the baby boom. To an unprecedented degree in American history, various facets of the American economy focused towards infants and adolescents due to their swelling numbers and subsequent economic influence. Youths themselves sought to exert their economic power resulting in the formation of a dynamic youth culture manifesting itself most prominently in the entertainment media.
This study examines the origins and scope of the American baby boom. Cultural trends directly related to the baby boom are also analyzed. …

Omnibus: Precursor Of Modern Television, Mary Beth Hinton
Omnibus: Precursor Of Modern Television, Mary Beth Hinton
The Courier
"Omnibus" was, to use an expression current during the Golden Age of Television, a "window on the world", through which art, drama, music, dance, history, literature, science and technology, as well as athletics and comedy were brought into American homes by the gentlemanly and articulate host, Alistair Cooke. Between 1952 and 1961, "Omnibus", in seeking new ways to inform and to uplift, expanded the repertoire of television and stimulated the American public's appetite for 'cultural' programming.
In the early 1960s, Syracuse University unexpectedly acquired kinescope recordings of the "Omnibus" television series' first two seasons: 1952-53 and 1953-54. After the Ford …
