El material de este estudio lo constituyen cincuenta y siete piezas de tejidos precolombinos de la Zona Andina. Entre estas piezas se encuentran también husos para hilar y madejas de hilo. Todas pertenecen al Instituto de Antropología de la Ciudad de La Habana, y en el momento de ser estudiadas y trabajadas se encontraban depositadas en una bóveda de la Academia de Ciencias de La Habana. El texto se concentra en la figura del maestro tejedor que habitó en los Andes del sur del Perú durante los siglos xvi y xvii. Se analizan datos que permitirían aseverar que ahí se concentró la mayor cantidad de tejedores especializados, conocidos como cumbicamayoc, y que ellos fueron los probables autores de los textiles más complejos y finos de la época, como los tapices, magníficos ejemplares elaborados con los materiales y las técnicas andinas ancestrales, y que se ubican actualmente en algunos de los museos más importantes del mundo. Este capítulo estudia el pigmento conocido como azul maya a partir de las fuentes históricas sobre la cultura náhuatl prehispánica, específicamente la Historia universal de las cosas de Nueva España de Bernardino de Sahagún. La obra sahaguntina posibilita la identificación del nombre del azul maya en náhuatl, al mismo tiempo que contribuye a reconstruir su simbolismo en Mesoamérica, en particular, entre los nahuas. Asimismo, el capítulo explica por qué los datos contenidos en la Historia de Sahagún sugieren que el pigmento no era producido en el Valle de México, sino que llegaba ya manufacturado a manos de los artistas nahuas. …

Resumen: El presente trabajo muestra el panorama multifacético de colecciones clasificadas como etnográficas y que son controvertidas por sus contextos de adquisición y adscripciones alternativas en el trascurso del tiempo. El estudio se centra en cinco casos del Museo de las Culturas de Basilea (Suiza) del Museo Etnológico en Berlín (Alemania) y de los Museos Nacionales de la Cultura del Mundo en Gotemburgo, (Suecia) que los autores han acompañado de cerca en los últimos años y que involucran procesos de restitución. Cuando en 2005 se encontró la Tumba del Sacerdote Lechuza en San José de Moro (SJM), no era la primera vez que se hallaban representaciones de lechuzas entre los objetos arqueológicos recuperados en el sitio y, ni muchos menos, la primera vez que las encontrábamos en el arte mochica o el arte de la región andina en general. Este estudio trata sobre las influencias artísticas, prehispánica y colonial, que han tenido y tienen los bordadores en la creación de los diseños bordados que adornan el vestido tradicional indígena contemporáneo de los pueblos de San Pablo, de Tinta y de Marangani de la provincia de Canchis (Cuzco, Perú). El bordado con máquina (maquinasqa) apareció, posiblemente, en la primera mitad del siglo xx. This thesis presents the first ethnography of QuiltCon, the annual fan and artist convention for quiltmakers who identify with and participate in a social phenomenon called the Modern Quilt Movement (MQM) within the 21st century quilt world. During one of the most tumultuous decades in the history of Switzerland, a small group of Vaudois republicans chose to secure their children’s familial, cultural and spiritual patrimony by relocating to the New World. In April 1800, at Le Chenit in the Vallée de Joux, five families framed a compact intended to organize a communal settlement in the Northwest Territory. This digital anthology explores feminism in selected short fiction by women writers from the 1911 run of the popular women’s magazines Woman’s Home Companion, Ladies’ Home Journal, and The Farmer’s Wife. This fiction furthered the women’s rights movement by allowing women to imagine a world similar to their own with a heroine who voiced their desires and enacted change. Rather than the more experimental, inaccessible literature of avant garde high modernist writers consumed by the upper class, popular fiction reached a wider, middle class audience and was more effective at producing a progressive zeitgeist following the stilted Victorian …

This thesis examines Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House book series for the frontier food ways described in it. Studying the series for its food ways edifies a 19th century American frontier of subsistence/companionate families practicing both old and new ways of obtaining food. The character Laura in Wilder's books is an engaging narrator who moves through childhood and adolescence, assuming the role of housewife. An overview of the century's norms about food in America, the strength of domesticity as an ideal, food and race relations, and the frontier as a physical place round out this unexplored area of Little House …

Tucked In: American Quilts And The Beds They Cover, 1790-1939, Madeleine Roberg

This study examines the size of quilts to determine if changes in quilt size are a reflection of changes in bedstead size. To conduct this study 118 quilt publications and 304 furniture publications (including Sears, Roebuck and Co. retail catalogues). were examined for data on quilts and bedsteads. Using these sources the dimensions of 3299 surviving quilts and 1651 bedsteads were examined to determine whether or not changes in quilts sizes correlate with changes in bedstead dimensions. The study found that quilt size (mean area) steadily declined between 1800 and 1910 and increased in the 1920s and 1930s. The most …

A modern cattle industry in Cherry County, Nebraska, developed as challenges of land use and pressures of economic change demanded new and flexible adaptation to the unique environment. Located in the Sandhills, a region only opened to legal white settlement after Indian removal in 1878, the area passed through phases of occupation. Open-range cattlemen drawn by lucrative local markets gave way to struggles over land use between farmers and ranchers. Early twentieth century legislation, the 1904 Kinkaid Act, designed to promote farm settlement, in the end, benefited ranchers the most. As the wedge to gain legal access to land ownership, …

When Europeans visit the Great Plains region of the United States, they are impressed by the newness of the place. Coming from communities that often are filled with physical evidence of great age, they are reminded that here virtually none of the visible marks of Euroamerican culture are more than a mere century old. Before 1854, the year in which Nebraska was legislated into existence, permanent residence in this place was technically illegal. Except for the never-numerous Indians, a few fur trappers and traders, and some soldiers and their camp followers clustered around Fort Kearny, Nebraska had no population. It …

In the pages that follow I have summarized the views of certain selected scholars whose emphases seem to illustrate changing and contrasting interpretations of the interaction of environment and culture on the Great Plains. I have grouped their writings into two inclusive categories. First come those whose conceptual schemes suggest the primacy of environmental variables. I refer to these scholars, perhaps simplistically, as environmentalists, even though this term has acquired a different meaning in recent years. In the second group are several scholars, selected more arbitrarily than the first, whose writings seem to accord more importance to cultural factors. For …
