This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932, presents a portion of an original historical novel titled "Tossed by Fortune," set in colonial New Orleans and Louisiana during the 1760s. The narrative follows Louis de Montaigne, a young French Creole nobleman, and his family as they experience the political upheaval surrounding the transfer of Louisiana from French to Spanish rule under the Treaty of Paris.

Alan Seeger, 1888–1916, American poet, b. New York City, grad. Harvard, 1910. During World War I he served in the French Foreign Legion and was killed in battle in 1916. He is famous for his war poem, “I Have a Rendezvous with Death.” Classmate of T.S. Eliot. In this letter, Seeger talks about his arrival (in September, 1912) and accommodations in Paris, and comments upon the current political and spiritual culture of France.

On November 20, 1820, the whale-ship Essex, out of Nantucket, was twice rammed by a sperm whale and sank in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The crew of twenty took refuge in three open whale-boats, and attempted to sail east toward the coasts of South America. The boats were eventually separated by storms and darkness, and after more than 90 days two of them, holding five survivors, were picked up by other ships; the third boat was never found.

When a dancing master arrived in Boston in 1685 and offered lessons and classes for both sexes during times normally reserved for church meetings, the Puritan ministers went to court to suppress the practice. Increase Mather (1639-1723) took the leading part, writing and publishing this tract, which compiles arguments and precedents for the prohibition of “Gynecandrical Dancing, [i.e.] Mixt or Promiscuous Dancing, viz. of Men and Women … together.” These justifications were certainly shared with the court, which found the dancing master guilty, fined him £100, and allowed him to skip town.
