It is the purpose of this thesis to show the vory close nnd contintled relationship between the govern ment or England and the colony ot Virginia in the Commonwealth period and the greater independence of Virginia undor the Protectorate.Many debatable questions arose during the Commonwealth period and were treated in accordance with the local situation.The general relationship of this first period is that of close and friendly interest, but, at the same time, the authority of the Commonwealth was maintained.In the Protectorate period there were tower questions, since the Lord Protector was occupied with heavier and more pressing problems …

A year ago the attention of the world was focused upon central Europe. Then for a brief moment Poland flashed, and today the Baltic Sea region is in the spotlight. After a lapse of some two centuries, this sudden re-appearance of the Baltic to assume a major role in European affairs calls for comment. Touching upon these Baltic waters are six small democracies (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Esthonia, Liatvia, Lithuania) and two powerful totalitarian states ( Germany and Russia.) Poland's leading role in Europe's most recent crisis which has developed into the Second World War has given new emphasis to her position in world affairs. Due perhaps to the varied course of events that have attended Polish destinies for her 1000 years of history, press dispatches relative to her past are sometimes wholly inadequate and not infrequently confusing. It is with the hope of giving the average reader a fuller background of Polish affairs that this article has been written. The writer has endeavored to deal with the events briefly and as objectively as is humanly possible.

It was in the fall of 1781, over four years after the Declaration of Independence, that General Cornwallis surrendered his force at Yorktown, and American independence was realized. Yorktown is generally supposed to have been the decisive battle of the American Revolution, but it was the naval engagement off the Virginia Capes six weeks earlier, when the British fleet through a confusion over tactical signals, was driven away from the Chesapeake Bay, that actually decided the fate of the British forces in America. The Huguenots, though they were not known by this nomenclature until later, had their origin in France about the middle of the sixteenth century, nearly 400 years ago. As pioneers in the field of absoute libery, the Huguenots probably rendered their greatest sergvice to the world. From the beginning, their slogan has ever been: "An open Bible, freedom of conscience, political and religious liberty."
