At seventeen Roger Fishinger’s a pretty good pitcher. But his older brother Bob’s a pitcher, too—and a once-in-a-generation type talented pitcher, with Big Leagues written all over him. The way Roger sees it, the only way to make up some ground in this probably unwinnable sibling rivalry is to start by getting a Division One scholarship. That, and nothing less. Junkballer is a short novel told from the perspective of Roger over the course of his junior-to-senior year summer as he tries achieving this goal, while navigating the world of youth travel baseball and all its quirks. Holding Up the Sky is the culmination of dedication and research to create a series of eleven vignettes detailing the narratives of immigrants through a work of fiction. The goal of this project is to bring to light the people who may not always be visible— those who have left their homes to travel somewhere strange, whether in search of better opportunities, lost loved ones, or a renewed hope in humanity. Kerstin Ekman’s The Forest of Hours (first published in Swedish in 1988) and Jenny Erpenbeck’s Visitation(published in German as Heimsuchung in 2008) span two decades and two countries, but both novels reach across far larger epochs, in their respective journeys from Europe’s glacial prehistory through the Dark Ages and the Thirty Years War, and through the twentieth century’s collective trauma. My research attempts to build an archive of the violence that mothers and daughters faced under the Argentine "Dirty War" dictatorship of 1976-1983 with specific attention to pregnant women who visibly straddle the identity of mother and daughter. By looking to state-sanctioned resources and fictional narratives, including novels and film, I hope to better understand a lived experience of pregnant prisoners that has been historically erased, and understand how this intergenerational trauma instilled a legacy of terror through the exploitation of feminized bodies. My thesis proposes that subversive, pregnant women posed the historically rich threat of being “brujas” (witches) against …

Articles, stories, and other compositions in this archive were written by participants in the Mighty Pen Project. The program, developed by author David L. Robbins, and in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia, offers veterans and their family members a customized twelve-week writing class, free of charge. The program encourages, supports, and assists participants in sharing their stories and experiences of military experience so both writer and audience may benefit.
