Youth And Legends: A Short Story Collection, Jennifer Kiefer
Youth And Legends: A Short Story Collection, Jennifer Kiefer
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
While young narrators or protagonists have been included in many famous works, such as J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, or Truman Capote’s Other Voices, Other Rooms, typically the main character of a work of fiction is mature. The pieces in this collection of stories, however, are centered around children. Adolescents act as the protagonists of the stories, exploring an adult world. The goal of this collect is not to contribute to young adult fiction or child fiction, but to appeal in style and form to adult readers in a mature, adult writing style. …
Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger
Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger
Senior Honors Projects
Time is often considered the fourth dimension due to the fact that nothing can exist outside the confines of time. Since time is so intrinsic to the very nature of being in the world, creators of film, literature, and television, which are reflective of life, must at least implicitly confront concepts of time and temporality within their work. The intangibility of time presents many difficulties but also a great number of opportunities in accurately portraying its true function within the world.
Many literary works, films, and television programs directly confront concepts of time. Each medium with its own benefits and …

The Raven Loup : A Modern-Day Romance Novella, Andrew John Hamilton
The Raven Loup : A Modern-Day Romance Novella, Andrew John Hamilton
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In her appropriately-titled study, Romance, Barbara Fuchs introduces the romantic in literature as the "textual strategy[:] a concatenation of both narratological elements and literary topoi, including idealization, the marvelous, narrative delay, wandering, and obscured identity, that [...] both pose a quest and complicate it". The purpose of this thesis is to creatively employ the "textual strategy" of romance, applying it to a story set in the near-present with modern-day symbols, events, and characters. With this in mind, the traditional romantic hero is a warrior, a general, or a knight with physical or mental prowess that goes beyond the scope of …
Some Like It Hot – Goblin‐Style: “Ozhivliazh” In Russian Film Translations, Alexander Burak
Some Like It Hot – Goblin‐Style: “Ozhivliazh” In Russian Film Translations, Alexander Burak
Russian Language Journal
This article is about English‐to‐Russian voiceover translating as a translation technique and a medium that responds to and shapes sociocultural identities. It is also about a trend in Russian film translating to enliven – in various degrees – the translation text as compared with the more neutral language in the original films. And, finally, given the multiple translations of the same cultural products, films included, it is an attempt to make a case for a strand of research and translation quality analysis that that may be called “translation variance studies.”

Zephyrus is produced by the English Department and contains student creative writing.
"A literary magazine called Voices had been produced for a number of years prior to that, but in 1969 Professor Gatlin, with the help of Professor Will Fridy, came up with the title Zephyrus, the Roman name for the west wind, because Dr. Wood had asked that "Western" be included in the title." Guatemala Rising, One Girl At A Time: Findings From The 2009–2010 Abriendo Oportunidades Evaluation, Nicole Cushman
Adolescents and Young People
This report documents the process, key results, and lessons learned during the evaluation of the 2009–10 cycle of the Abriendo Oportunidades program. Abriendo is one of very few youth-serving programs in Guatemala that specifically targets one of the country’s largest and most vulnerable and underserved population segments; namely rural indigenous girls and young women ages 8–24. The program divides this critical demographic into age-appropriate cohorts and works with them to build their health, social, and economic assets as key strategies to improve health and education outcomes, improve gender equality and promote community development—thereby contributing to breaking the poverty cycle that …
