Kant was perhaps the first philosopher to note the distinctive puzzle, verging on paradox, which marks our dealings with art. Works of art seem to place us under an obligation to interpret them and yet we are convinced that our interpretations will never be exhaustive. Kant attempts to account for this peculiar phenomenon by talking of "purposiveness without purpose" or of the aesthetic idea as "a representation of the imagination to which no concept is adequate." We are constrained to see some pattern or organization in a work of art and this is typically understood as a teleological or purposive …

The research proposed in this paper involved such an application of current quantitative methods in an experimental investigation of the effects of environmental lighting conditions on the variables of self-disclosure (a dialogic, message-content variable) and interpersonal attraction (an intra-interpersonal unidimensional perceptual variable) in subjects engaged in one hour of structured dyadic interaction in a lighting controlled setting. This research would hope to bring to light some important information regarding the effects of illumination of the environment on both the content of what is being said, and the perception of the communicators. This chapter has presented different models of order (traditional and high technology), and their possible implications for the natural environment. The thesis that native/non-native conflicts arise over different perceptions of the environment instead of racism per se, was put forward. It was suggested that one primary reason for this was the different time frames within which the respective cultures operated in the new worlds of Siberia and America; the aboriginal populations had a minimum of 10,000 years to adapt to their particular environments, the colonists had barely 300 years. The Slumping Process was discovered in the context of Pacific Free School, which was a loosely structured secondary school that offered an alternative to the public high school system of education. This study was conducted during Pacific Free School's second year of operation. The sociology of women is currently an expanding discipline. Production of substantive works on the status of women is epidemic. Although there exists a multiplicity of good short articles drawing on sociological theory, especially theory developed in the field of race relations, there seems a paucity of more extensive theoretical analyses. The study contains three parts. First is a brief analysis of the community mental health doctrine embodied in new California legislation, including a reconstruction of the conditions and forces which appear to have shaped this policy. The second part is an inductive empirical analysis of one phase of policy implementation. Here the research focuses on the disposition of ex-state mental patients in Humboldt County, California after closure of the North Coast region’s major state hospital. It deals with the structural problem of how mental patients are absorbed and handled in the community, and examines the translation of policy into action. …

Symbolic Interactionism And Conflict Theory: Complementary Approaches To The Study Of Social Structure, Guy W. Raymond

This study will provide a brief excursion into the area of sociological theory. The underlying assumption guiding it, although nowhere explicitly stated, is that scientific theory is not a means of determining ‘the truth,' but rather a method of ordering data so that underlying similarities between seemingly disparate events become evident. This assumption includes also the notion that theory determines ‘facts' as much as facts determine theory. The reciprocal relationship between theoretical perspective and data will become apparent when perspectives are compared.

Transcendence And Meaning In Sociological Theory: Emile Durkheim's Conscience Collective, The Social Reality Of Berger And Luckman, And Karl Deutsch's Group Mind, David P. Armentrout

This thesis proposes to trace the thread of transcendence through the theories of Durkheim, Berger and Luckman, and Karl Deutsch. This thread is seen as twofold, as it is attached to the transcendent process, consisting of structural involvement, and also of informational involvement. The process of transcendence itself will be "held constant" by making it the central focus of the investigation. This will allow the other two terms to be examined with respect to it. A discussion of the implications of this study will conclude the presentation.

Personality Similarities Between Female Alcoholics And Wives Of Alcoholics, Birgitta E. Qvistgaard-Welsh

It is hypothesized in this study that both alcoholic women and wives of alcoholics show, a) psychopathic tendencies and, b) a more highly feminine orientation to life than women in general. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory "short form" was administered to twenty alcoholic women, twenty wives of alcoholics and twenty "normal" women picked at random from the general population. It was found that both alcoholic women and wives of alcoholics obtained significantly elevated psycho- pathic deviance (high Pd) scores. The wives of alcoholics obtained significantly elevated femininity (low Mf) scores; while the alcoholic women did not obtain a significantly low …

This study is an investigation of the attitudes expressed by the early church toward St. Peter. While most attempts to understand the origin of Rome's claim to authority based on Petrine primacy have dealt with attitudes expressed in documents, the approach here is to examine the evidence found in various types of artistic expression. It is hoped that the attitudes toward St. Peter which affected and may have caused the unique association between himself and Rome are clarified. This paper will consider autobiography from these various perspectives in search of a means of evaluation of autobiography in terms of the restrictions and potentials of the genre. The intention, the truth, the theme, or the formal value--alone-- are insufficient for a valid conception of the genre. Their interaction is what makes some autobiographies more than historical curiosities--what make them successful and enduring works of art. This study of American autobiography will focus on Sherwood Anderson's autobiography and autobiographical novel, A Storyteller's Story and Tar.
