Secondary School Curriculum

Suki, a young adolescent, loves poetry and its world of metaphor. Her friend Harry hates literature class and the idea of writing poetry frightens him. Their worldviews begin to converge as the two come to see logic and poetry as two ways of finding meaning in life experience, though not before they have confronted a number of problems of language, knowledge and aesthetics. As Suki, Harry and their classmates work through the obstacles they encounter in creative writing, they construct new understandings of concepts like friendship, freedom, integrity, originality, harmony, form, balance, personhood and meaning.

The most elementary discussion of art involves some concern with the question: what is art? As anyone who has tackled this question knows, it seems to have no simple answer. This is not to say that it is not fascinating and worthy of much discussion, however it does not need to be answered for the purposes of this paper. The pragmatic nature of this sociological endeavor does not require the philosophical necessity of defining art in terms of attraction and aesthetics. Research concerning listening has suggested that good listening habits can be taught, are important to the learner, and should therefore be developed through instruction. Gains at various levels have been noted in this chapter. The experiment presented in this paper arose from my curiosity about the effects of listening training in*the early grades. Besides considering earlier findings, it seemed a sound idea to begin at the beginning. Because I recognized the value of listening to both students and adults, I undertook a project and then a study to assemble some listening activities and then to determine how effective planned instruction …

Approaching American Culture Through Art And Poetry (An Exploration Of Ten Themes), Emily M. Bufferd

My project consists of forty-five paintings, twenty-five postcard-size prints, twenty slides, three postcard-size photographs and thirty poems, each representing one or more of ten themes chosen as a basis for teaching about United States culture. These ten themes signify dominant concerns of Twentieth Century America and are arranged, in the following pages, with those works pertinent to the particular theme. This approach to culture is intended for use in an advanced ESL class, its purpose being to increase awareness of and promote discussions about our culture. This study investigates the variables currently utilized by the field of debate in making assessments of intercollegiate debater credibility. All of the variables are the result of field-dependent data. As such, this study investigates the actual perceptions and judgments of debate coaches and judges as they evaluate and critique intercollegiate debaters, and the criteria that compose the assessment of the debater. Following the compilation of constructs of debaters obtained from several coaches, the list is reduced to a more manageable number and then is returned to the coaches and judges in the field of debate for their assessments and judgments …

Thermography is a technique whereby the structure or condition of an object is studied by means of precisely measuring temperature variations over the surfaces of the object. The research which is described in this thesis was undertaken to determine whether thermographic techniques could be applied to the field of art conservation to detect subsurface voids within painted wooden panels. It must be stressed, however, that this research was carried out as a feasibility study with no attempt being made to establish or refine a technique that could be immediately applied to the examination of works of art.
