Breast cancer accounts for 30% of all new cancer cases in women, is the leading cancer site among American women, and is the leading cause of death for women ages 35- 54. According to the 1996 Annual Report published by the Cancer Program of the Saint Joseph Health System of Humboldt County, breast cancer was the top site of cancer for all patients diagnosed and/or treated in their hospitals. Social support and its effect on cancer patients’ adjustment to diagnosis, treatment, and long-term survival has been studied extensively and such support has been found to be associated with positive outcomes. …

Dividing Community: Environmentalists, Police, And Pepper Spray, S. Giovanna Richman

This thesis was a study and analysis of a community’s reaction to an incident of law enforcement’s use of pepper spray on environmentalists carrying out a protest demonstration. The study is based primarily on an analysis of the content of the printed letters to the editors of the local print media.

James, Liz. Light And Color In Byzantine Art, Kathleen Maxwell

Art and Art History

James' title coupled with the generous number of color illustrations in her text led me to assume that she would survey Byzantine art in more traditional terms of light and color. Instead, the book pursues the perceptual repercussions of color in Byzantine art and is based on James' dissertation, "Colour Perception in Byzantium" (University of London, 1989).

The most notorious twentieth-century Mexican artist and politician, Diego Rivera, stepped up to the international pedestal of art in the late 1920s. Recognized for his revival of mural painting and undeniable compositional skill, the middle-aged Rivera was crowned a Michelangelo of modern art by artists, intellectuals, and admirers of the time. When Rivera traveled to the United States to show off his peacock's tail, the American media also participated readily in the servile flattery of the Mexican master. These tea bowls, with their intimate scale and individual personalities, simultaneeously offer an apprectiation of the past and the contemporary. The subtle beauty of traditional-style bowls contrasts with the more exuberant contemporary idiom, raising an awareness of the role that art has, and can play, in everyday life.

Writing And Illustrating Books For Young Readers, Denise May Williamson

This creative project consists of one complete manuscript for a children's book, intended for young readers (ages 5-8), and twelve possible illustrations created in coordination with the text. The manuscript explores the difference between old age and youth, as it is discovered by a child desiring to spend the day with his grandfather. Page numbers and other notes are included to define how the text would come together to fit publishers' guidelines. Various illustration techniques were studied throughout the coursework of this program, to include: black and white ink, color reproduction, watercolor painting, and enhanced computer art. This research examines an approach to art making and viewing that questions the acceptance of the autonomous object in favour of a transient experience. It focuses specifically on work and writing from the 1960s by the American artist Robert Morris that attempted to alter the then predominant Formalist understanding of the art object as autonomous and self-referential. This investigation follows the formal and conceptual development of Morris' work (and that of associated artists Richard Serra and Rafael Ferrer) with particular focus on the shift from static objects to time-based and transient an-forms including film/video and installation. In an interview with Michael Naimark, his work and experiences were discussed. Naimark talks about the beginning of his career at MIT and his experience with technology and media in the late 70s. He also discusses about his experience with Atari Research, Apple, and Lucasfilms. Sociology has been notoriously bereft of theory dedicated to explaining the emergence and perpetuation of the social phenomenon of religion. Berger’s sacred canopy contention and Stark and Bainbridge’s theory of religion are the most salient, if not sole, exceptions. Berger claims that religion functions by giving significance to an otherwise meaningless world. Stark and Bainbridge, on the other hand, insist that religion functions by compensating folks for those things which secular society cannot provide them. In sum, Berger’s approach is holistic yet lacks a program for empirical study, and Stark and Bainbridge’s approach is too tangled up with the embattled …

In this thesis the use of Aboriginal designs on postage stamps is examined from an anthropological perspective. Firstly the ways in which Australia Post reached decisions to use Aboriginal designs is considered and the protocols for their use examined. The theoretical ideas of Munn on the ownership of designs, and of Morphy and Keen pertaining to the "economy of knowledge" provides an approach for considering the topic. The archival work for the writing of this thesis was conducted in a short visit to the archives of Australia Post. The research showed the practices of Australia Post with regard to using …
