Tea Bowl: Imperfect Harmony, Gretchen A. Mehring, Greater Lafayette Museum Of Art

These tea bowls, with their intimate scale and individual personalities, simultaneeously offer an apprectiation of the past and the contemporary. The subtle beauty of traditional-style bowls contrasts with the more exuberant contemporary idiom, raising an awareness of the role that art has, and can play, in everyday life.

Toward A Synthesis Of Perspectives In The Sociology Of Religion, Tony Randall Gragg

Sociology has been notoriously bereft of theory dedicated to explaining the emergence and perpetuation of the social phenomenon of religion. Berger’s sacred canopy contention and Stark and Bainbridge’s theory of religion are the most salient, if not sole, exceptions. Berger claims that religion functions by giving significance to an otherwise meaningless world. Stark and Bainbridge, on the other hand, insist that religion functions by compensating folks for those things which secular society cannot provide them. In sum, Berger’s approach is holistic yet lacks a program for empirical study, and Stark and Bainbridge’s approach is too tangled up with the embattled …

Writing And Illustrating Books For Young Readers, Denise May Williamson

This creative project consists of one complete manuscript for a children's book, intended for young readers (ages 5-8), and twelve possible illustrations created in coordination with the text. The manuscript explores the difference between old age and youth, as it is discovered by a child desiring to spend the day with his grandfather. Page numbers and other notes are included to define how the text would come together to fit publishers' guidelines. Various illustration techniques were studied throughout the coursework of this program, to include: black and white ink, color reproduction, watercolor painting, and enhanced computer art. Lulu sulked and protested: “Don’t want to see the pictures!” so her parents left her sitting on a couch. A winged cherub climbed down from a painting hanging above her and flew Lulu into the winter scene of a Flemish painting, then into other paintings where they splashed in the sea, growled at a tiger, rode a horse, and fell off a cliff. Small Piece Of Paper -- Going Out, Flying Around The World: A Preliminary Discussion On The Reproduction Of Aboriginal Creativity On Postage Stamps, Michael James Judd

In this thesis the use of Aboriginal designs on postage stamps is examined from an anthropological perspective. Firstly the ways in which Australia Post reached decisions to use Aboriginal designs is considered and the protocols for their use examined. The theoretical ideas of Munn on the ownership of designs, and of Morphy and Keen pertaining to the "economy of knowledge" provides an approach for considering the topic. The archival work for the writing of this thesis was conducted in a short visit to the archives of Australia Post. The research showed the practices of Australia Post with regard to using …

In an interview with Michael Naimark, his work and experiences were discussed. Naimark talks about the beginning of his career at MIT and his experience with technology and media in the late 70s. He also discusses about his experience with Atari Research, Apple, and Lucasfilms. He then describes his life as an artist, from 1992 to 1996 and where where that brought him with his knowledge of technology.

Redefining The Art Experience : From Static To Temporal Art Forms, Justine Mcknight

This research examines an approach to art making and viewing that questions the acceptance of the autonomous object in favour of a transient experience. It focuses specifically on work and writing from the 1960s by the American artist Robert Morris that attempted to alter the then predominant Formalist understanding of the art object as autonomous and self-referential. This investigation follows the formal and conceptual development of Morris' work (and that of associated artists Richard Serra and Rafael Ferrer) with particular focus on the shift from static objects to time-based and transient an-forms including film/video and installation. Since I began writing personal essays I have looked at others' writings differently. I analyze writing techniques and look for hidden how-to instructions from which I can learn more about the craft from the masters. One technique that has continually fascinated and challenged me as a writer is the weaving of fact and fiction into meaningful and colorful works of art. Mr. Fairbanks was a man of his time. His scrupulous attention to anatomical detail made him a super realist as he worked from the interior structure of the human figrue outward to an accurate presentaion of each turning of a mouth, drooping of an eyelid or flexing of a muscle. He saw the human figure, male or female, as an object to be venerated, a mirror of elevated spiritual and aesthetic vaules more than just simplistic replication.
