Challenges Facing The Reunification Of Korea, Patricia Cazeau May 2023

Challenges Facing The Reunification Of Korea, Patricia Cazeau

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

After the Second World War, the once-unified northern and southern halves of the nation of Korea had been under immense external pressure from the American-Soviet Cold War. As a result, the northern side had sided with the Russian communists, while the southern side had leaned into the United States’ style of democracy over time. Despite multiple proposed ideas for unification, the increasing tensions between Russia and the United States discouraged reunification, despite the Cold War’s eventual end. Thus, various social, religious, economic, and military crises multiplied within each country’s borders. This paper will assess the challenges surrounding the reunification of …

Pioneering The Field Of Deaf Women’S Studies, Genie Gertz, Arlene B. Kelly, Vicki Hurwitz May 2023

Pioneering The Field Of Deaf Women’S Studies, Genie Gertz, Arlene B. Kelly, Vicki Hurwitz

Society for American Sign Language Journal

This article is written by three Deaf women-scholars who pioneered Deaf Women’s Studies (DWS) about thirty plus years ago: the discipline arose from the need to explore the Deaf female experience (Kelly, 2016). Then, the 1990’s was when the DWS coursework was first developed and offered in American academia. To gain a greater understanding for DWS, the article begins by reviewing the emergence of both Black Studies and Women’s Studies as academic fields and how these were the impetus for DWS. A discussion about the Deaf women’s experiences during different periods of American history is given in detail. A brief …

Role Of Women According To The Indigenous Ways, Melanie Mckay-Cody May 2023

Role Of Women According To The Indigenous Ways, Melanie Mckay-Cody

Society for American Sign Language Journal

Understanding the role of women according to the Indigenous Ways1 is a new topic that needs to be addressed as part of promoting diversity in the American and Canadian societies. The Deaf communities in particular will benefit from learning about the Indigenous Women. The article begins with the discussion on issues pertaining to Indigenous Deaf people. This is followed with three parts, the first covering the organization that Indigenous women created. The second covers a review of tribal signs with special attention to their cultural relevance. The third part pays tribute to Indigenous women who have done their part as …

Experiences With A Museum Exhibition On Deaf Women: Success And Room For Improvements, Meredith Peruzzi May 2023

Experiences With A Museum Exhibition On Deaf Women: Success And Room For Improvements, Meredith Peruzzi

Society for American Sign Language Journal

The creation of a permanent museum at Gallaudet University in 2007 constitutes a historic milestone in the Deaf community, showcasing Deaf people by understanding and embracing their diversity and differences. As with the larger society, the Deaf community has its share of people of color and those with additional disabilities. This article will show there are lessons to be learned on realizing and achieving a more inclusive exhibit. Subject to discussion is the exhibition on Deaf women that was found both impactful and challenging at the same time. It was in 2015 that an exhibition entitled Deaf HERstory was first …

Sticking Up For Sign Language: Historical Deaf Women In Action, Kathy Jankowski May 2023

Sticking Up For Sign Language: Historical Deaf Women In Action, Kathy Jankowski

Society for American Sign Language Journal

The attention to deaf women during an important part of United States history when oralism dominated the education of deaf children is sparse. This motivated the research undertaken for this paper questioning what role deaf women played and the strategies they adopted to promote deaf children’s sign language rights. A review of historical documents indicates that there are a number of deaf women who fought along with the rest of the deaf community against the oral only movement in the instruction of deaf children during the late nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. A number of recurring …

The Polarization Of Political Parties And The American Republic, Patricia Cazeau May 2023

The Polarization Of Political Parties And The American Republic, Patricia Cazeau

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

In the modern age of the 24-hour news cycle and social media, misinformation is rampant, and tensions are high. With a constant barrage of information coming from either direction, political opinions grow in number, and often in opposition to one another. This widens the fissure between the two major political parties in America, the conservative Republican, and liberal Democratic parties. Based on a study of 11 countries, including the United States, political polarization threatens democracies by creating political “tribes” that subscribe to groupthink, a harmful ideology that uplifts one school of thought while condemning others. In addition to having violent …

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’S Discourse On Inequality And Its Impact On Modern Western Society, Roger Engle May 2023

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’S Discourse On Inequality And Its Impact On Modern Western Society, Roger Engle

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

The famous French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau has undoubtedly left his mark on history and heavily influenced numerous governments over the last two hundred years. Rousseau’s “Discourse on Inequality”, in particular, changed the way in which individuals view society, religion, and morality in a significant manner. The worldview which is presented in this writing is the product of years of abandonment, sexual promiscuity, and a lack of personal responsibility. The real-world implications of which have led to the deaths of millions upon millions in one of the bloodiest centuries in all of human history and inspired some of modern history’s most …

A Path To Achieve European Energy Security, Nicholas Wolf May 2023

A Path To Achieve European Energy Security, Nicholas Wolf

Student Theses 2015-Present

The apparatus of Europe’s energy security has collapsed. The Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine, hydrocarbon market turmoil, and the ever-growing threat of climate change has thrust the continent into crisis. As the risks of severe recession, acute energy shortages, and climatic disasters have begun to materialize, the member states of the European Union (EU) have been left scrambling to secure novel energy supplies. In the short-term, these developments pose severe risks to the EU and its member states. Yet, opportunity often presents itself in the midst of hardship, and the European Energy Crisis of 2022 is no different. This essay …

Friedrich Warnecke: Toward A New Edition Of Ad Infinitum, Elton Machado

Dissertations

The dissertation collects and organizes information on German double bassist, pedagogue, and author Friedrich Warnecke and investigates the significance of his life and work to the double bass history. The ever-changing European musical environment throughout Warnecke’s life, the challenges double bassists faced during that time, and the rapid developments of the double bass at the turn of the twentieth century provide a rich historical background. The study addresses Warnecke’s life, pioneering writings on the history of double bass, pedagogical contribution and influence as a teacher and author, and work as a performing double bassist. Finally, it discusses Warnecke’s substantial pedagogical-technical …

"If These Walls Could Speak": Judson College And The Formation Of The New Baptist Woman, 1838-1930, E.Gabrielle Walker May 2023

"If These Walls Could Speak": Judson College And The Formation Of The New Baptist Woman, 1838-1930, E.Gabrielle Walker

Dissertations

Southern Baptist women’s collegiate education and experiences led to their questioning traditional Baptist gender roles and interpreting religion to fit a modern, progressive worldview. Judson College established in 1838 in Marion, Alabama, created a space for its Baptist students to consider socially appropriate ways, outside of doctrinal boundaries, to serve God, themselves, their families, and humanity. Judson remained theologically and culturally conservative, perpetuating inherited religious and social notions of female subordination to men, while increasingly offering students more progressive curricula to meet changing economic and cultural realities. In compliance with white Southern and Baptist conservative values, Judson’s students generally accepted …

Haramed And Dangerous: A Thematic Examination Of Muslim Women’S Representation In We Are Lady Parts, Reham Bohamad May 2023

Haramed And Dangerous: A Thematic Examination Of Muslim Women’S Representation In We Are Lady Parts, Reham Bohamad

Dissertations

Since the early days of Western media, Muslim women have been portrayed in a negative way. From belly dancers to oil-rich horny sheikhs to voiceless passive wives of terrorists. This image has led the Western spectator to associate Islam and the Muslim women’s headscarf (Hijab) with backwardness, extremism, and oppression. In recent years, there has been a positive shift towards a more inclusive and authentic representation of Muslim women. This shift is the result of the post-network era which provides on-demand media outlets that challenge the dominant hegemonic production system and provide diverse and inclusive images that cater to niche …

Cenabis Bene: A Culinary Odyssey Through Apicius, Kathryn Atkinson May 2023

Cenabis Bene: A Culinary Odyssey Through Apicius, Kathryn Atkinson

University Scholar Projects

Apicius is the sole surviving cookbook from classical antiquity; as such it is invaluable for what it tells us about ancient feasting customs. Yet the gluttony typically associated with classical antiquity has no place in Apicius beyond the art that is inherently associated with food; we are not so much given a seat at the cena (dinner) as we are led into the kitchen, handed an apron, and instructed to cook. This critical analysis explores each recipe not only on the surface—i.e., examining the ingredients and recreating selected recipes—but also on a deeper level, lifting food above its concrete reality …
