Our Moral Relationship To Nature, Benjamin Simpson May 2023

Our Moral Relationship To Nature, Benjamin Simpson

Senior Theses

In this paper I will explore the question of whether or not humans, as natural beings, are morally responsible for their actions in relation to nature. After all most natural beings, i.e. deer, wolves, whales, or even plants, regardless of their level of intelegence, are held responsible for their effect on the environment. When a rabbit population explodes and an ecosystem is sent into turmoil, we do not morally find fault with the rabbits. With this in mind I ask: why is it so different when humans send an ecosystem into distress? What is our moral relationship to nature? To …

Mending The Broken Bond: Exploring Human-Elephant Conflict In K. V. Dominic’S Poems, Ramya Kalaivani K, Raichel M. Sylus May 2023

Mending The Broken Bond: Exploring Human-Elephant Conflict In K. V. Dominic’S Poems, Ramya Kalaivani K, Raichel M. Sylus

Between the Species

Mountains are the immovable totem of the landscape which stand out from the surrounding environment as they are the elevated portion of the earth’s crust. In mountain regions, wildlife is one of the essential factors to be considered for developing a holistic environment. As a result of the rapid dwindling of resources for wildlife, the ecological balance is affected. It deteriorates the relationship and instigates conflict between human beings and animals. Mountains are home to various species. Among various animals, elephants are the significant animals seen in the mountain region. K.V. Dominic’s poems depict humans’ cruelty and brutal treatment towards …

2023 Denominational Survey Results, Calvin University

CRCNA Denominational Survey Results

As part of the denominational ministry plan, Our Journey 2025, the CRCNA has contracted with DataWise Consulting to administer an annual denominational survey. The results from the 2023 survey have now been compiled.

All CRC-affiliated adults and older youth are welcome to respond to this survey as they are led. However, in order to ensure a healthy number of responses to the survey each year, CRC leaders have randomly assigned every CRC church to one of five “cohorts.” Each cohort includes about 20 percent of all active congregations, and each congregation will be asked to engage in active recruitment …

Using Video Storytelling To Transform The Consumer Narrative Of Fashion Into One Of Caretaking: A First Step Towards A Sustainable Fashion Industry, Piumi De Alwis

Masters Theses

This study speaks about today’s apparel industry run by the consumption based “consumer narrative” and will introduce a sustainable alternative of “caretaker narrative,” a consumer oriented way of being to combat toxic practices in the apparel industry. Meanwhile on the other hand in today’s day and age video storytelling is getting extremely popular in the media we daily consume. This study examines how to effectively use video storytelling to popularize the sustainable practice of the “caretaker narrative” in society.

Cmlit 100: Writing About World Literature (Philosophical Literature), Victoria Tomasulo

Open Educational Resources

This syllabus was designed as an Open Educational Resource for Writing about World Literature, a comparative literature course focused on the writing of research papers. The course theme, Philosophical Literature, will be of interest to those in the academic community who are engaged in the teaching and learning of interdisciplinary writing. Students choose a philosophical concept that interests them the most, among three-- the absurd hero, lightness versus weight, and the will to power-- and they use it as a lens through which to better understand literary works from different cultures. They learn to write recursively, putting literature and philosophy …

The Role Of Rural And Urban Geography And Gender In Community Stigma Around Mental Illness, Shawnda Schroeder, Chih Ming Tan, Brian Urlacher, Thomasine Heitkamp

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications

Empirical evidence describes the negative outcomes people with mental health disorders experience due to societal stigma. The aim of this study was to examine the role of gender and rural/urban living in perceptions about mental illness. Participants completed the Day’s Mental Illness Stigma Scale, a nationally validated instrument for measuring stigma. Directors of Chambers of Commerce in North Dakota distributed the electronic survey to their members. Additionally, distribution occurred through use of social media and other snowball sampling approaches. Analysis of data gathered from 749 participants occurred through examination of the difference in perceptions based on geography and gender. The …

Looking To Entangle, Alex Mclaughlin May 2023

Looking To Entangle, Alex Mclaughlin

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

What kinds of images stick with you? Are they the ones that are readable, understandable right from the get-go? Surely not. Likely, they’re the ones that challenge you, frustrate you, and entangle you in the process of trying to understand them. This thesis argues that the semantics of looking, and the way in which the art-object is experienced through the process of looking, creates the opportunity for the unique engagement of the viewer as more than a bystander. By frustrating them with a lack of information, or rewarding them for looking harder, the artist can make the viewer aware of …

A Peeling Art, Terry Rim May 2023

A Peeling Art, Terry Rim

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Action is greater than words, interaction is greater than viewing, and experience is greater than theory. So I came up with a way to make my art into an act of criticism toward consumerism. My art resembles colorful Pop Art on the surface but follows the defiant spirit of Dadaism at the core. It reveals the content full of dark humor and cynicism once the viewer “peels off” the appealing surface by interacting with it. The four artworks analyzed in the paper — Hole, The Twelephone and Alarming Alarm, Self-Destructive Ashtray, and Heavenly Cow — are designed …

The Monumentalization Of The Past: German Humanist Patriotism And Source Use, 1488–1582, Justin Meyer May 2023

The Monumentalization Of The Past: German Humanist Patriotism And Source Use, 1488–1582, Justin Meyer

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The development of a patriotic discourse among German Renaissance humanists emerged from a humanist desire to memorialize the past by gathering information from the sources of German history and geography. Prevailing scholarly arguments explain the emergence of this discourse as a result of cultural conflict with Italian humanists who reproached the Germans for their barbarity. This explanation, which I call the Conflict Model, is inadequate as a means to explain the phenomenon of this patriotism because it relies on too few sources. This dissertation rests on a far more expansive source base in which cultural conflict is a limited but …

The “Dread Sex Cases:” Community, Citizenship, And The Regulation Of Adult Theaters In The 1970s, Erin Barry May 2023

The “Dread Sex Cases:” Community, Citizenship, And The Regulation Of Adult Theaters In The 1970s, Erin Barry

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Through an innovative examination of scale (local, state, and national regulatory structures), space (the location of theaters, the spatial arrangements inside them) and place (the cities and suburbs in which these battles took place), my dissertation on the regulation of adult theaters in the 1970s raises compelling questions about sexuality, space and the various levels at which citizenship is enacted and policed. I utilize three Supreme Court cases, Paris Adult Theater v. Slaton, which dealt with consent and the application of community standards, Erznoznik v. Jacksonville, which addressed bans on nudity and pornography at drive-in theaters, and Young v. American …

Solo Dance In Greek And Roman Comedy, Marleigh Anderson May 2023

Solo Dance In Greek And Roman Comedy, Marleigh Anderson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In the first full-length study focusing exclusively on comic solo dance, I argue for the presence and significance of solo dance in both Greek and Roman comedy. My dissertation aims to answer two driving questions: where does solo dance (broadly defined as dance by actors) occur in extant Greek and Roman comedy, and how does such dancing contribute to the plays? The introduction lays out my methodology for approaching these questions. My study then moves from what can be known with certainty (definite solo dance scenes and references to dance) to what requires more speculation (likely dance scenes). Chapter one, …

The Juris Master: A Proposal For Reducing Excessive Public Defender Caseloads, Blake Comeaux May 2023

The Juris Master: A Proposal For Reducing Excessive Public Defender Caseloads, Blake Comeaux

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

The US public defense system is underfunded, understaffed, and underdelivering on the Constitutional promises of the 6th Amendment, the right to a fair and speedy trial. This state of our public defense system results in monstrous impacts for indigent defendants nationwide. Through indefinite delays in litigation, being abandoned in jail while sitting on waiting lists for public defenders, and being outright denied representation, indigent defendants are deprived of their rights. Beyond just defendant neglect, our current system puts immense strain on public defenders, prosecutors, and state budgets. In an attempt to combat this current state of affairs, this paper …

Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine May 2023

Expressive Marks: Art In The Age Of Augmented Reality, Carson G. Levine

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Augmented reality (AR) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) introduce new considerations for the long-standing debate of what it means for digital art to be “real.” However, the ability to create AR experiences is limited to those who are technically skilled or who can afford to consult someone else. This paper addresses the need for an accessible tool that enables artists of all technical backgrounds to expressively create marks in AR. The solution includes a mobile application called CrayonAR. The system was designed to be modular, minimal, and physically engaging, and was developed in Unity using ARFoundation and Firebase Storage and Realtime …

Re-Membering The Living Earth: A Year In Rural Sri Lanka, Samuel C. King May 2023

Re-Membering The Living Earth: A Year In Rural Sri Lanka, Samuel C. King

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The following thesis tells the story of my year in rural Sri Lanka. After college, I traveled from suburban New York to the highlands of the island country with the hopes of writing an ethnography on agrarian Buddhism. I soon realized, however, that I was not just embarking on an academic project, but an inner journey to explore ways of being that had been lost in the modern culture I had known. My narrative recounts how immersion in a rice cultivating village deepened my sense for what it means to live in reciprocity with the more-than-human world—a world of plants, …

What God Has Joined Together: The One Threefold Purpose Of Marriage, David Frayne Shudy May 2023

What God Has Joined Together: The One Threefold Purpose Of Marriage, David Frayne Shudy

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Modern married couples and marriage-minded individuals are often left awash in a sea of confusion aimlessly groping about for a purpose for their marriage, with disastrous societal results. Whereas long-standing Christian tradition has taught a unified threefold marital purpose of three equal elements—procreation, mutual help, and remedy for sin—Enlightenment thinkers and their ideological descendants have introduced a hierarchical marriage teleology with a self-chosen purpose (usually companionship) at the top in order to correct for an alleged countervailing overemphasis on procreation in premodern marital teleology.

This thesis will challenge the claim of a relative deficiency in the companionate aspect of premodern …

“Speechless, Placeless Power”: Affect And Trauma In Moby-Dick And “Bartleby, The Scrivener”, Lauren Colandro May 2023

“Speechless, Placeless Power”: Affect And Trauma In Moby-Dick And “Bartleby, The Scrivener”, Lauren Colandro

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick and “Bartleby, the Scrivener” contain affectively unsound figures such as Captain Ahab and Bartleby that seem to disrupt larger narrative functions, both developing these characteristics in response to prior trauma. However, narrators are not privy to the extent of their feelings because of their idealistic attachments to the disruptive figures. This thesis examines the commonalities of Melville’s disruptive characters in both stories using affect theory, as well as how their disruptions illuminate the effects of repressed trauma in an increasingly capital-driven society.

Recovering Pearl: Utopian Projections In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter", Evan Weiss May 2023

Recovering Pearl: Utopian Projections In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter", Evan Weiss

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Much of the recent scholarly criticism of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter aims to demonstrate the novel’s function as an allegory for Hawthorne’s anti-reformist (and especially anti-abolitionist) views at the height of the antebellum crisis. This commitment to revealing Hawthorne’s conservatism tends to cast the novel’s major figures as pieces within a self-balancing paradigm of good (intentions) and evil (acts) that ultimately symbolizes the author’s preference for inaction on the major political and humanitarian issue of his time—slavery. Curiously, however, the character of Pearl, Hester Prynne’s “wild,” “bird-like” child who dominates nearly every scene in which she appears, is almost …

On The Six-Cornered Snowflake, Jackson Hescock May 2023

On The Six-Cornered Snowflake, Jackson Hescock

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

On the Six-Cornered Snowflake, named after Johannes Kepler’s 1611 essay on geometrically covering surfaces, is both the title of both my final thesis work and essay. Beginning with an inquiry into the nature of hand-made object as intrinsically valuable, my earlier sculptural work surrounding quilting is broken down and considered as a form of reverence for the American object. This is partly achieved through a comparison to traditional Japanese packing techniques and how my own assembly mirrors and converses with the graceful and sensitive packing of Japanese hand-made goods. Early 20th-century flight experiments are also hand-made objects of …

Socrates The Expert, Jeremy Samuel Henry May 2023

Socrates The Expert, Jeremy Samuel Henry

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

I argue that an account of recognizing experts can be drawn from the dialogues of Plato in which Socrates is engaged in the activities he describes in the Apology, that he is an expert in recognizing experts, and that this supports his argument that no one can be an expert in ethics. I also show that his account contains a decision procedure for recognizing experts and a view about the nature of expertise (from which that procedure is derived) that is very plausible for his purpose.

Haunted Pasts And Contested Presents: Essays On Thai Gothic Fiction, Nationalism And Identity, Anothai Kaewkaen May 2023

Haunted Pasts And Contested Presents: Essays On Thai Gothic Fiction, Nationalism And Identity, Anothai Kaewkaen

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation takes the form of a suite of six essays (plus a formal introduction and conclusion), each focused on a representative work of Thai Gothic fiction. This corpus spans the late 1950s to the present day, encompassing the entire period known as “modern” Thai history, which takes 1932—the year the absolute monarchy fell and our first author was born—as its starting date. These texts are read not only in relation to their English-language forebears—the Jane Eyres, the Draculas, and Rebeccas that are their progenitors, alongside lesser-known authors like Marie Corelli (1855-1925)—but also for the ways in which they interact …

How Can One Be Happy? Conteuses’ Lessons On Proper Conduct And Mentality In The Court Society Of Louis Xiv, Zhiyuan Meng May 2023

How Can One Be Happy? Conteuses’ Lessons On Proper Conduct And Mentality In The Court Society Of Louis Xiv, Zhiyuan Meng

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

“How can one be happy?” is an age-old question that has been asked countless times throughout history. The answer, however, varies considerably according to when and where the question is asked. In seventeenth-century French court society, marked by patriarchal and monarchical domination, the key to happiness depends heavily upon the individual’s gender and social position. This dissertation examines three cross-dressed heroines in fairy tales written by first-generation French storytellers at the end of the seventeenth century. Their adventures as male chevaliers are conducive to the evaluation of advice for an audience of both genders from aristocratic and high bourgeois backgrounds …

Musical And Spiritual Meaning In The Franciscan Works Of Franz Liszt, Jorge Luis Modolell May 2023

Musical And Spiritual Meaning In The Franciscan Works Of Franz Liszt, Jorge Luis Modolell

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Liszt’s relationship to St. Francis of Assisi was an integral part of the composer’s identity. His devotion to the saint, cultivated from an early age, served as a constant source of spiritual guidance that only grew stronger over time. Texts by St. Francis and anecdotes from the saint’s life provided the artistic incentive for a number of important works, which form the core of the present study. By examining several of these works together, with full analyses and within a broader cultural framework, this dissertation aims to arrive at a true understanding of the messages Liszt took from this figure …

Painless Hylomorphism: A Deflationary Metaphysics Of Form, Graham Renz May 2023

Painless Hylomorphism: A Deflationary Metaphysics Of Form, Graham Renz

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops and defends a deflationary or minimalist version of hylomorphism, the Aristotelian view according to which objects are composites of matter and form. According to hylomorphists, a house has various material components—bricks and timbers—and a special, non-material or formal component that makes the bricks and timbers to be a house. Hylomorphism is intuitively appealing and explanatorily powerful, but its primary posit—form—is hard to get a firm grip on. Because of this, contemporary hylomorphists have proffered myriad accounts of form. Forms might be structures, relations, principles of unity, inherent character-grounders, abstract offices, functions, emergent powers, configurational states, activities, processes, …
