The Sobering Lesson Of The Grolier Codex, John L. Sorenson, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
T he story of the authenticating of the Grolier Codex twenty-five years ago still teaches some valuable lessons about the dangers of jumping to conclusions and the problems of name-calling, even though the scholars involved no longer hold to their original positions. As, discussed recently by John L. Sorenson, the discovery of ancient manuscripts is a touchy issue that, for some people, can be unsettling.

Hinckley and the BYU Board of Trustees to have FARMS become part of Brigham Young University. In extending the invitation to FARMS, President Hinckley said: "While I have never been intimately involved with FARMS, I have observed it from time to time. It began modestly many years ago and represents the efforts of sincere and dedicated scholars. It has grown to provide strong support and defense of the Church on a professional basis. This has had important salutary effects both in addressing the …
Language Sciences And Their Impact On Dispelling The Illusion Of Difference And Contradiction In The Book Of God, Ahmed Ababneh
Language Sciences And Their Impact On Dispelling The Illusion Of Difference And Contradiction In The Book Of God, Ahmed Ababneh
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This study examines the employment of language sciences to dispel the illusion of difference and contradiction in the Holy Qur’an through the use of rhetoric and grammar. Rhetoric is explored through its three branches: semantics, eloquence, and "badi" (embellishment). In semantics, techniques such as the meanings of letters, the method of delivering information and intent, implication and explicitness, and presenting assumptions as certainties or straightforward ideas are analyzed. The rhetorical device of metaphor is also considered. For the science of "badi," the study demonstrates that certain topics influence dispelling misconception, focusing on moral enhancements like exaggeration in description—not for the …
Sources Of Income For Women In Islam, Abdulfattah Al-Samman
Sources Of Income For Women In Islam, Abdulfattah Al-Samman
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
According to some studies, the feminization of poverty has become a common trend in Islamic societies, with rates exceeding 70%. This situation directly contradicts the essence of Sharia, which provides women with thirty sources of income and ensures their financial independence and care in all circumstances. If a woman is wealthy, Sharia safeguards her wealth and grants her the freedom to spend it as she wishes. In the Muslim community, a breadwinner is typically responsible for meeting her needs, protecting her honor, and providing food, drink, clothing, and housing according to his ability. In the absence of a breadwinner, Allah …

A Corpus-Based Study Of English Synonyms: Small, Little, Tiny And Petite, Raeda Ammari, Wajed Al-Ahmad
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
Synonymy is one of the complex linguistic features that learners of English face as a second language. This study investigates the similarities and differences among four English synonyms—small, little, tiny, and petite—in terms of their genres, usage comparisons, grammatical patterns, and collocations. The data is derived from both the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) as a native English corpus and the Cambridge Learner Corpus (CLC) as the non-native corpus. The results from both corpora show that small and little are frequently used, while petite is rarely used in COCA and not used at all in CLC. …

The Effect Of Credit Facilities Granted By Jordanian Islamic Banks On The Money Supply: An Analytical Study For The Period From 2011 To 2020, Ali Al-Aababneh, Amer Al-Otoum
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
This study aimed to explore the concept and types of credit facilities and their relationship to the money supply. It also aimed to explain the concept of Islamic banks and their reality in Jordan, as well as the nature and types of financing formulas used by Jordanian Islamic banks in the facilities they grant and their impact on generating bank money. This was achieved through a presentation of statistical analysis models for the independent study variables, represented by credit facilities, the factors affecting them, and the extent of their impact on the dependent variable represented by the money supply. The …

The Legend Of Orpheus Between Narrative And Religious Presence: The Poem 'Dar Jeddi' By Al-Sayab As A Model, Salem Al-Trabeen
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
The study provides an analytical reading of one of the most important Greek legends, the legend of Orpheus, and how it is used within the poetic construction of the Arabic poem. The use of this myth has varied among poets, but Badr Shaker al-Sayyab stands out as one of the poets who presented the legend of Orpheus in its religious and spiritual form, rather than in its legendary context. The poem "Dar Jeddi" by Al-Sayyab represents a significant achievement in employing the legend of Orpheus through its spiritual discourse. This study presents the integration of the legend within the construction …

Semantic Disparity Between Amr (Command) And Nahy (Negative Command) In The Noble Quran: An Interpretive/Contextual Study, Saad Meqdad, Murad Al-Bayyari, Mohammad Al-Taher
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
The present study explores the semantic disparity between the use of the verb Amr (command) and Nahy (negative command), based on the contexts of each in the Noble Quran. Among the key results of the study is that Amr primarily serves to obligate the prompt execution of an action or its continuous maintenance, which may or may not have commenced prior to the command. Furthermore, Amr often denotes a desirable or commendable action. In contrast, Nahy, which consists of a present verb with Lā, typically necessitates halting a despicable action that is common or committed by some individuals. It is …

Open Liver Open Lung: Elaborate Expressions In White Hmong, Luke Walker Packer
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a description of four-word elaborate expressions in White Hmong, a Hmong-Mienh language spoken in the northern mountains of Southeast Asia. The goal of this work is to describe the behavior, characteristics, and functions of the expressions using data from the White Hmong-English Dictionary (Heimbach 1980). A native speaker helped find 318 examples of elaborate expressions in the dictionary. Elaborate expressions have previously been described as "a balanced group of four words in which the first and third element, and the second and fourth element, are either identical to each other or share a common meaning and often …

Code Switching Use, Attitudes, And Identity: Differences Among Spanish-English Bilinguals In Canada, Mexico, And The United States, Ana Sofia Rubalcava Karmanov
Theses and Dissertations
Code-switching (CS) has been extensively studied for a variety of purposes and under many contexts. In recent years there has been a shift in CS literature to better understand the sociological forces that affect speakers’ use of CS. While in earlier literature, CS was perceived negatively by both speakers and the general public (Milroy & Muysken, 1995; MacGregor-Mendoza, 2021; Anderson & Toribio, 2007; Fishman, 1967), it has since been shown that many bilinguals view CS positively. More recent research suggests that bilinguals perceive CS as an important part of their identity and use it to show they belong to particular …

The -Go Morpheme And Reference Tracking In Jicarilla Apache, Lee Shanideen Ferrin
Theses and Dissertations
Jicarilla Apache is a Southern Athabaskan language with a complex verbal structure, including a prefix template with positions for more than ten affixes. Little has been done to document or describe the language grammatically or typologically, but one of the morphemes that has been described in the literature is the suffix -go. The morpheme can be found in elicited speech as well as in narrations. This morpheme is one of the few verbal affixes that can appear after the verb stem and plays a role in many subordinate clause constructions. It has been described as a temporal marker, a feature …

Forgotten Voices: Japanese War Orphans In China, Feimo Zhu
Theses - ALL
Research on World War II (WWII) history has predominantly focused on the European theater, with limited attention given to the war’s events in Asia. The scarcity of in-depth studies conducted by Asian historians necessitates an investigation into the complex events that unfolded in this region during this significant period in world history. This study aims to shed light on the often-neglected history of Japanese war orphans in China during WWII and their lives in the post-war era. To provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the war’s impact on the lives of ordinary individuals, this study follows the historical timeline …

Perceptions Of "Southern" In Utah English, Chad M. Huckvale
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, two experiments are conducted to study language regard of Utah English. Experiment 1 is a draw-a-map study wherein participants were asked to mark areas on a map to of Utah where people speak differently (Preston 1989; Bucholtz et al. 2007). Experiment 2 uses a new research method, referred to here as a "perceptual audio survey". With this method, participants are asked to listen to recordings of native English speakers and identify where in Utah the speaker is likely from (Preston 1996:320-328; Cramer & Montgomery 2016:11). Crucially though, the speakers used in this experiment were from throughout the …

The Effect Of Shadowing With Text Presentation On Intermediate-Level Esl Learners' Pronunciation, Mishelle Kehoe
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to replicate previous studies (Foote et al., 2017; Martinsen et al., 2017) investigating the technique of shadowing and its impact on English language learners’ oral fluency and intelligibility. The target population for this study was intermediate-level English language learners as prior shadowing research has focused on advanced learners (Foote et al., 2017) and beginner learners (Lu, 2021). The study involved both a control group (n=10) and a treatment group (n=10), with each group participating in a semester-long class at Brigham Young University’s English Language Center (ELC). Both groups participated in pre and post testing …
L2 English And Language Anxiety: Accuracy, Comprehensibility, And Speech Rate Across Three Communication Tasks, W. Cole Thorpe
L2 English And Language Anxiety: Accuracy, Comprehensibility, And Speech Rate Across Three Communication Tasks, W. Cole Thorpe
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how second language (L2) English learners differ in their amount of language anxiety across three communication tasks: a formal academic speaking test, an informal casual interaction with a classmate during an activity in pairs, and a formal interview with an unfamiliar native speaker. It also addressed whether and how their language anxiety across the three tasks affected their accuracy, comprehensibility, and rate of speech. Thirty-seven intermediate-high L2 English learners participated in the three communication tasks. They also completed a general language anxiety questionnaire and three anxiety inventories--one before each task. Results demonstrated that the speaking exam caused …

Panem's Parallel's: Authoritarianism In The Real World, Quentin J. Stewart
Honors Capstones
Throughout the twentieth century, there has been an increasing awareness and fear of authoritarian governments in the Western world, the United States in particular. While these methods of governance were steadily becoming more present in Western media throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, portrayals of authoritarianism and dystopia experienced a peak in popularity toward the end of the two-thousands decade, with book and film franchises like The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins spearheading this emergence. Many of the themes and aspects of the series setting alert the audience to many of the ways authoritarianism can be seen in real life, …
