The Crocodile God Of Pharaoh In Mesopotamia, John Gee
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In the famous anti-Mormon crusade against the book of Abraham in 1912, one of the individuals involved asserted that the book of Abraham could not be true because "Chaldeans and Egyptians are hopelessly mixed together, although as dissimilar and remote in language, religion and locality as are American and Chinese." This exaggerated opinion was seconded by the Reverend Samuel A. B. Mercer: "I challenge any intelligent person who knows Chaldean and Egyptian history to read the first chapter of said book [of Abraham] without experiencing the same feeling. Chaldea and Egypt are hopelessly mixed . . . . No one …

Emma And The Joseph Smith Translation, Scott H. Faulring
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Recently, researcher examining the original "New Translation" or Joseph Smith Translation (JST) manuscripts discovered evidence of a scribe whose work on the manuscripts had previously only been supposed. Emma Smith, the Prophet's wife, recorded more than two pages of the JST document on a certain day during the first months of the translation. Although only a small percentage of the overall content, Emma's scribal contribution tangibly displays the realization of an earlier revelatory assignment given her by the Lord.

“And They Were All Astonished (?)” The Verb Ἐκπλήσσω, Competition, And Mark’S Narrative, Nathaniel Desrosiers
“And They Were All Astonished (?)” The Verb Ἐκπλήσσω, Competition, And Mark’S Narrative, Nathaniel Desrosiers
Journal of Religious Competition in Antiquity
This essay discusses the key Greek verb e0kplh/ssw in Mark’s gospel, which is typically rendered as “astonished” or “amazed” in English translations. However, outside of the New Testament the term usually connotes a much more emotional, visceral response than mere amazement; relaying a sense of anger, frustration, and the threat of violence. Accordingly, I argue that standard modern renderings of this verb in Mark and the other Synoptic Gospels are not only inaccurate; they also detract from the overall depth and meaning of the passages in which it appears. Through a reexamination of this verb in concert with an analysis …
A Tale Of Two Fathers: Leadership Between The Estate And The Study House In The Origin Story Of Eliezer Ben Hyrcanus, John Mandsager
A Tale Of Two Fathers: Leadership Between The Estate And The Study House In The Origin Story Of Eliezer Ben Hyrcanus, John Mandsager
Journal of Religious Competition in Antiquity
The coming-of-age tale of R. Eliezer b. Hyrcanus, found in a number of late midrash collections, contains competing ideals of masculine mastery and leadership. Through analysis of the three main characters of the story, R. Eliezer, and his two fathers, Hyrcanus, and his master R. Yoḥanan b. Zakkai across the variants of the story, this article demonstrates that the spaces of the agricultural estate and the study house are idealized in competing ways in rabbinic midrash as spaces for mastery of ideals of masculine identity (success in estate management and excellence in Torah study). In addition, Hyrcanus and R. Yoḥanan …
“All One In Christ Jesus:” Physical And Moral Equality In Galatians 3:28, Kevin Mcginnis
“All One In Christ Jesus:” Physical And Moral Equality In Galatians 3:28, Kevin Mcginnis
Journal of Religious Competition in Antiquity
Galatians 3:28 has often been interpreted as a slogan or baptismal formula that is disconnected from Paul's argument in the letter. It is also often pointed to as evidence of a radically egalitarian lifestyle among early Christians, one in which ethnic, social class, and gender differences are erased in favor of complete social and political equality. This article argues that Gal 3:28 does fit well with Paul's argument about the necessity of baptism for gentiles, but not circumcision, to be included as part of God's salvific plan. It also makes the case that the equality suggested in 3:28 has to …

Despite the American Psychiatric Association’s removal of homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973 and ego-dystonic homosexuality in 1987, nonheteronormative sexual orientations remain stigmatized and underrepresented in scientific literature. To estimate the prevalence of LGBTQIA+ topics in popular psychological research, the author queried more than 20,000 articles from 1987 to 2022 in the two most cited journals in each of four major domains (cognitive, clinical, developmental and social). In addition, the author randomly queried 20% of all empirical articles published from 1987 to 2021 in the top eight empirical journals to understand how often sexuality …

Lectures Examine Abinadi
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In a new video discussion on the ancient prophet Abinadi, Todd Parker, associate professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU, presents an informal discussion on the trial of Abinadi before wicked King Noah's court of priests. Parker's wide-ranging and eclectic presentation summarizes information on Abinadi's trial for blasphemy and false prophecy, the courageous way he delivered God's message of repentance to the wicked Nephite priests, and the masterful way he taught the priests the correct interpretation of the law of Moses. The law of Moses prescribes daily activities from which the people learn principles; the law of Christ teaches correct principles …

We often receive questions from Insights readers about one aspect or another of the research that FARMS sponsors. We plan to address some of these questions, and the larger concepts that lie behind them, periodically in this column on "FARMS research notes." In this issue we consider some financial aspects of research support. In future issues we will address such topics as what counts as evidence, how to (and not to) draw conclusions from evidence, what is the nature of "peer review," and what is the purpose and meaning of scholarly "weasel words." We invite your comments and suggestions.

Latest Brown Bag Lectures
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
On March 27 Carl Johannessen, emeritus professor of Geography from the University of Oregon, spoke about evidences found in the ancient Old World of crops normally considered indigenous to the New World, particularly maize. His discussion, entitled "Diffusion of Cultural Traits across the Oceans in Pre-Columbian Times," included a slide presentation showing ancient architecture that depicts what he argues is maize. If his evidence is confirmed by additional research, it will help establish the existence of contacts between the Old and New Worlds before Columbus, thus helping to establish the plausibility of the Book of Mormon account.
