Eldin Ricks's Concordance Aids Scripture Study

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Eldin Ricks devoted his career to a study of the scriptures. In addition to spending thirty-six years teaching and inspiring students at BYU, he wrote many books and articles about the scriptures--especially materials intended to help others study the scriptures, such as his Combination Reference, often known as the "Ricks Ready Reference," and editions of the Book of Mormon intended to make reading and studying the book easier (his Fireside Editions and Wide Margin Edition). But one project that he worked on for much of the last twenty years of his life was uncompleted at his death in …

Old World People In The New? (Part 2), John L. Sorenson

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

The Quiche Indian tradition of "Toltec" migrants from the Near East reaching Mesoamerica (see Insights, April 1995) may be of interest in relation to new linguistic research reported by a senior linguist at one of this country's most prestigious universities. Copies of two papers outlining her findings have become available; however she insists that their contents not be attributed to her until they have been formally published.

Review Begins New Features: Picks And Index

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In the latest Review of Books on the Book of Mormon, editor Daniel Peterson selects the books he would most recommend to his readers from among those published in 1994. The book by Warren and Michaela Aston is the most highly recommended in this issue: In the Footsteps of Lehi: New Evidence for Lehi's Journey across Arabia to Bountiful (reviewed by Ara Norwood). Peterson recommends the book enthusiastically for its "brief and rather personal summary of the authors' extremely important research into the Arabian geography" that might correspond to 1 Nephi.

Format Changes

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

We have made some changes that we hope will make Insights even more useful. We have organized the news into departments to make it easier to find. We have restructured the page format somewhat so we could punch the paper to fit in a binder for storage-for those who wish to use a binder with the FARMS name and logo, we are negotiating with manufacturers to obtain nicelooking binders for a reasonable price; we should be able to offer these by the next issue.

Ricks's Thorough Concordance Aug 2023

Ricks's Thorough Concordance

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

In 1971, Eldin Ricks initiated the first project to put the scriptures into computer form. The database that resulted has been used as the basis for the Topical Guide and other scriptural references and was the original database for the Church's distribution of the scriptures in computer form (LDS View) and for most other recent concordances, both computer and printed. But Brother Ricks always had in mind a printed concordance of the LDS scriptures comparable to the James Strong Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, which lists all occurrences of all words in the scripture text, shown with a meaningful …

New Video Lectures

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Two new lectures are available in the FARMS Book of Mormon Lecture Series. Dale Le Baron, associate professor of Church History at BYU, discusses how the Book of Mormon presents "A Pattern for Preparing a People to Meet Christ." This pattern includes: know the signs of the second coming; beware of wickedness; know the patterns of destruction; believe that despite persecution, righteousness will prevail; heed the counsel of the prophets; and study the ministry and the return of Christ. The Lord's elect are responsible for preparing his people for the second coming of the Savior. Brother LeBaron counsels us to …

Griggs To Translate Egyptian Papyri

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Wilfred Griggs of the Department of Ancient Scripture at BYU has been given authorization to examine a set of over 150 papyri found years ago layered underground in some stone enclosures near an ancient temple in western Fayum, Egypt. The discoverers, unable to read the ancient language(s) of the writer(s), simply put the treasure in storage. The papyri are believed to be from the first through the fourth centuries and written in Greek, with possibly some Coptic.

Early Lds Views Of Millennium Aug 2023

Early Lds Views Of Millennium

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

What did early Church members think about the end of the world and the ushering in of the Millennium? In The Millenarian World of Early Mormonism (University of Illinois Press), Grant Underwood examines how profoundly influenced the Church was by the view of an imminent second coming of Christ and millennial transformation of the earth. What makes this book of interest to FARMS readers is its detailed exploration of early Latter-day Saint understandings of the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

Madsen Inspires Fireside Attendees On Temple Worship

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Some 800 members of the Arcadia and Pasadena (California) stakes sat engrossed at a FARMS-sponsored fireside on 20 January 1995 as speaker Truman Madsen presented three questions about temple worship and the Atonement. First, if you knew that Christ himself was to minister unto you in the nearby temple, would you be there? Second, if you knew you could receive at the hands of the Savior a kind of patriarchal blessing for the rightful use of your human talents, would you be there? Third, how much will you give to receive God's all?

Old World People In The New? (Part 1), John L. Sorenson

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Joseph Smith is said, in 1842, to have "quoted with approval from the pulpit reports of certain Toltec legends which would make it appear that those people had come originally from the Near East in the time of Moses"; he did not connect the purported migration at all to the Book of Mormon.

Flickering The W-Defense, Michael Robinson Aug 2023

Flickering The W-Defense, Michael Robinson

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

One way to defend the Principle of Alternative Possibilities (PAP) against Frankfurt-style cases is to challenge the claim that agents in these scenarios are genuinely morally responsible for what they do. Alternatively, one can grant that agents are morally responsible for what they do in these cases but resist the idea that they could not have done otherwise. This latter strategy is known as the flicker defense of PAP. In an argument he calls the W-Defense, David Widerker adopts the former approach. I argue that, while Widerker's argument does a poor job showing that these agents are not morally responsible …

Warnings Against The Exploitation Of Children In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, James Henry Lambert Aug 2023

Warnings Against The Exploitation Of Children In Young Adult Dystopian Literature, James Henry Lambert

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The works of Suzanne Collins, Koushun Takami, and Neal Shusterman present a unique subset of young adult literature in which young adults are forced to kill one another. My thesis argues that the presentation of child gladiators in these stories is a form of weaponization conducted by the fictional governments as deterrent weapons against the parents of these fictional dystopias. This weaponization is accomplished through the creation of spectacular events that are meant to draw the attention to the power of the government, also as a form of deterrence against rebellion. Next, my thesis demonstrates how the human body is …

“Já Muito Estropeadas”: Bodies And Landscapes Of Oppression In Rodolfo Teófilo’S A Fome, Mikaela Wood

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis article analyzes Rodolfo Teófilo's novel "A fome" through the lens of ecofeminism, exploring the representations of gender and nature in Brazilian literature. The novel, set during a devastating drought in the Northeast, follows Manuel de Freitas and his family as they seek relief in Ceará. While existing criticism has focused on the novel's use of nature and masculinity, the portrayal of female characters and the connection between gender and nature representations have been overlooked. Ecofeminist theory offers a critical perspective to understand these dynamics, revealing the devaluation of women and nature in favor of men and human beings …

“My Flesh Was Its Own Shield” Eroticism In Aids Activism, Jake Whitney Aug 2023

“My Flesh Was Its Own Shield” Eroticism In Aids Activism, Jake Whitney

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The most enduring images of the HIV/AIDS crisis are pictures of ACT UP members being arrested and staging die-ins or men huddled together in hospital beds. These images and the historical narrative accompanying them espouse unity, a coming together of the queer community. No one manufactured this unity. Gay men came together to fight AIDS with force stronger than that which had fought back at Stonewall. Although the gay community saw increased unity during the AIDS Pandemic, the benefactors of this unity, the mainstream gay movement, marginalized men practicing radical sex through a rhetoric of anti-eroticism, a negative, rather than …
