The Issue Of War And Its Representations In Selected Iraqi Theatrical Works, Adnan Al-Mashakbeh, Yahya Issa, Marianna Al-Alawnah, Fuad Khasawneh

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series

This study aimed to identify the issue of war and its representations in theatrical texts by addressing the concept of war in philosophy and literature. This issue is one of the most complex human concerns and has been depicted in the works of various playwrights in Western theater. In the Arab theater, particularly in Iraqi theater, the issue of war emerges as a significant theme. It is noteworthy that Iraqi playwrights have expressed their commitment to the issues of their homeland, reflecting the lives, hopes, and aspirations of the Iraqi people across all social classes. The researchers applied a descriptive …

Column: The Development And Recovery Of North Omaha, Preston Love Jr.

Black Studies Faculty Publications

COMMUNITY COLUMNIST

To understand the long-term lack of development and economic devastation of the North Omaha community, one must understand the history. That history includes the growth of an African American community, during and after the turn of the 20th century, during a period of mass migration from the racist South. Despite the Nebraska Legislature’s passage of its Economic Recovery Act, I submit that without the understanding of these historical elements, an attempt to lead or create a plan to develop and recover North Omaha will struggle.

The series follows the story and struggles of Professor Ji-Yoon Kim, the first woman, and an Asian-American, to be appointed chair of the English department at the elite Pembroke University, as she tries to protect the employment of a young African-American female professor and to raise her adopted daughter as a harried single parent. This media review essay examines the themes and issues addressed in this TV series, including the challenges faced by women …

White Male Privilege, Diversity-As-Deficit, And Tokenism In The North American University: Reflections On Netflix’S The Chair, Annamma Joy

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Ji-Yoon, an Asian-American woman, is the newly appointed chair of the English department at Pembroke University, a lower-tier Ivy League school. Most of the department’s faculty are older and white and male, but do include a female white professor, Joan Hambling, clearly suffering from marginalization. There is also a young black faculty member named Yasmin McKay, whom Ji-Yoon wants to make the university’s first black tenured professor in the English department. Yaz, as they call her, has published in the top journals and is loved by her students, who flock to take her courses. There are other story dynamics dealing …

Reflections On The Development Of A Chinese-American Literature Course, Ling Ma Aug 2023

Reflections On The Development Of A Chinese-American Literature Course, Ling Ma

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

Chinese-American literature are an important part of Chinese literature and a literary genre of great cultural and social significance. Chinese-American literary works not only showcase international perspectives and the development of social and cultural issues, but also provide profound reflections on current international situations, social conditions, and human emotions, thereby enhancing readers' understanding and in-depth knowledge of the Chinese-American community. However, the reality is that American students have little knowledge of Chinese-American literature and are unaware of how to explore it. The author attempts to incorporate Chinese-American literature into Chinese language teaching curriculum to help students develop a preliminary understanding …

Modernity And The Water Calligraphy Experience, Maddie Oprica

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

This article explores how Chinese calligraphy has evolved in the modern world, utilizing one particular focus: water calligraphy. Water calligraphy is a fascinating, non-invasive, and communal form of street art. It recontextualizes traditional calligraphy and offers insight into modern Chinese society and the concepts of art and creation. The following article will go through water calligraphy's link to modernity, its general appeal, and my own personal experience attempting it.

Fullchinese At Mit: A Non-Disruptive Integration Of Technology For Intermediate Students, Emmanuel Roche, Tong Chen

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

We describe here ten years of development of a Chinese learning technology and five years of practical experience in integrating this technology in MIT classrooms for intermediate-high and advanced-low students. Key results are as follows:

  • There is no need to disrupt the classroom experience (both for the teacher and the students);
  • Technology provides a sharp increase in learning efficiency and motivation, as confirmed by students; and
  • This overall improvement in learning is achieved by focusing on the efficiency of personal study time.

The most salient type of feedback from students falls into two categories: “I wouldn’t have been able to …

Differences In Code-Switching Between Chinese Heritage And Non-Heritage Learners In Computer-Mediated Communication, Feng Xiao, Cecilia Wade Aug 2023

Differences In Code-Switching Between Chinese Heritage And Non-Heritage Learners In Computer-Mediated Communication, Feng Xiao, Cecilia Wade

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

In the fields of bilingualism and second language (L2) acquisition, growing attention has been paid to code-switching in Chinese heritage learners , as they show how early linguistic and cultural influence affects language use. Most existing studies focused on balanced bilinguals but little has been done to understand the differences in code-switching between Chinese heritage and non-heritage learners. Moreover, no studies have focused on L2 code-switching in computer-mediated communication which has become a daily routine of many L2 learners after the COVID pandemic. To fill these gaps, the present study compared differences in code-switching instances between five Chinese heritage and …

Dogma: How A Convenient Narrative Led To The Holocaust, Morgan Rynn Schroeder

History: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

I developed this research paper as a result of my study abroad experience in Germany in June of 2023. In this paper I weave a combination of personal experience, primary sources, and works by historians to explain how Nazi ideology developed into genocide. I also emphasize the importance of how history is remembered in the form of monuments and museums.

Srad Director's Corner: Us Army War College Russia-Ukraine War Study Project, Eric Hartunian

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

The Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College is analyzing the operational events and activities of the Russia-Ukraine War to understand the war’s strategic implications for the US Army and its role within the NATO Alliance. Analysis will further inform theater and national US strategy and may benefit Army doctrine and concepts vis-à-vis the Russian threat. It will also examine how US and allied defense policies should adjust to the current character of war. Lessons learned from Ukraine are relevant to the evolving challenge in the Pacific in the near term and are opportunities for the United States …
