Pappus Of Alexandria, Book Viii Of The Mathematical Collection, Pappus Of Alexandria, John B. Little
Holy Cross Bookshelf
John B. Little is the translator.
This is a Greek-to-English translation of one section or chapter of a larger ancient Greek work called the Mathematical Collectionby Pappus of Alexandria (ca. 290 - 350 CE). Specifically, this is “Book VIII”' of that work. To date and to the translator’s knowledge, no complete English translation of Book VIII has been published.
Pappus was very influential as a bridge between the knowledge that had been preserved from ancient mathematics and European mathematicians in the Renaissance. This specific part of Pappus' work deals with applications of geometry to questions in mechanics.

This article examines a series of photographs by Griselda San Martin, a Spanish journalist and documentary photographer based in New York City and Mexico City. The series focuses on the experiences of people at Friendship Park, a bi-national park located in the border region of San Diego, United States, and Tijuana, Mexico. Working in Tijuana, San Martin engaged with families as they attempted to connect with loved ones across the border in San Diego. Many of the people she met at Friendship Park had become separated from family members after living as undocumented migrants in the US and then being …

‘Public Enemy Number One’: The Resistance Of Japanese Americans In Concentration Camps, 1942-1946, Robert K. Coleman
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper explores the defiance of Japanese Americans who were unlawfully imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II, challenging the Model Minority Myth that portrayed them as docile and silent actors. Using court cases, personal stories, newspaper articles, and film analysis, the paper shows how Japanese Americans actively defied their unlawful situation and resisted their oppressors.
The Lost Fortune Of The Virginiaman: Analyzing The History Of The Beale Ciphers Using Historical Land Grants, Simon E. Rosenbaum
The Lost Fortune Of The Virginiaman: Analyzing The History Of The Beale Ciphers Using Historical Land Grants, Simon E. Rosenbaum
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Since the mid-19th century, the mystery of the Beale ciphers has confounded cryptanalysts, intelligence agencies, historians, and treasure hunters alike. Countless works of scholarship have analyzed the story, the ciphers, and possible locations for the massive buried treasure allegedly in rural Bedford County, Virginia. However, prior methodology applied to historiography on the subject has been unsuccessful in making headway in an understanding of the history and location of the Beale treasure. In examining prior scholarship in conjunction with recorded land grants and associated archaeological scholarship, this paper proposes a new direction for research into the Beale cipher mystery and new …

Domestic Material Culture And Wealth: Equality Bronze Age Houses And Intramural Tombs At Titriş Höyük, Turkey, Yoko Nishimura
East Asian Studies Faculty Publications
This article measures differential accumulation of material wealth between houses at the intrasite level. The dwellings measured are located in two separate residential neighborhoods at the urban settlement of Titriş Höyük in southeastern Turkey. As proxies of the measurement, the author employed various architectural spaces, built-in features, and portable artifacts exposed from primary floor contexts, as well as grave inclusions from burials within the houses that were completely or partially excavated. Gini values are calculated for thirteen variables derived from the material culture. The results show that occupants of the houses shared a similar economic status from about 2300 to …
From Thermopylae To Leuctra: The Evolution Of The Spartan Military Ethos, Evan M. Smith
From Thermopylae To Leuctra: The Evolution Of The Spartan Military Ethos, Evan M. Smith
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper examines the transformation of the Spartan military tradition from the Persian Wars to the Theban Ascendency. The Battle of Thermopylae marked the height of the Spartan military ethos. However, the strain of their military culture forced the Spartans to dilute their old mores over time. Their old cultural and military practices became unsustainable as military innovation increased. The Battle of Sphacteria clearly illustrated the deterioration of Spartan military ethos and the need for innovation. Straddling the line between tradition and innovation, Spartan military ethos received its death blow at the Battle of Leuctra.
The Darien Insurrection Of 1899 And The Origins Of The Mcintosh Militia, Elliot Ferro
The Darien Insurrection Of 1899 And The Origins Of The Mcintosh Militia, Elliot Ferro
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The Darien insurrection has been portrayed in historical literature as a lone victory of African American self-defense against racist violence in the Jim Crow south. This portrayal ignores the observable cause of the insurrection as a natural extension of decades of black political organizing in McIntosh County. In beginning to center the story of the Darien insurrection in Darien's home of McIntosh county it becomes clear how the insurrection was not a spontaneous event but a planned protest organized by a long surviving political machine. In recognizing the long history of political organizing by Tunis Campbell, a case can then …

Economic Equality In The Age Of Atlantic Revolutions, Wim Klooster
Economic Equality In The Age Of Atlantic Revolutions, Wim Klooster
History
While hierarchy had been a cornerstone of medieval and early modern societies, during the Enlightenment literate Europeans began to discuss the desirability of human equality. That ideal carried over into the Age of Revolutions (1775–1824), when some authors and activists specifically pursued economic equality. I will provide a brief survey of plans and policies on both sides of the Atlantic that aimed to introduce some form of equality or at least take the edge off of existing inequality.

Impact Of Sex In Luxury Fashion Advertisements On Brand Attractiveness And Identification, Alyssa Dana Dana Adomaitis, Diana Saiki, Juan Del Pozo Severino
Publications and Research
Purpose
This study examined perceived brand attractiveness of and identification with fashion luxury brands given different levels of sexuality in advertisements. Sex in advertisements has become increasingly more common to generate attention and interest in fashion luxury products, with limited research on its influence on the consumer. However, the use of sexuality in luxury advertisements may counter the ethical expectations of brands by the current consumer in the United States.
Design/methodology/approach
A sample of 1,266 males and females completed a survey on brand attractiveness and identification after examining an advertisement of a luxury fashion product. Participants were assigned an advertisement …
The Virtue Of Humour In King Lear, Kent R. Lehnhof
The Virtue Of Humour In King Lear, Kent R. Lehnhof
English Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"As the essays in this volume by Carolyn Sale and Katie Adkison clearly demonstrate, King Lear is centrally concerned with virtue. France makes it a priority when choosing Cordelia for his wife, telling her ‘Thee and thy virtues here I seize upon’ (1.1.250).1 Similarly, Cornwall cites Edmund’s ‘virtue and obedience’ when deciding to ‘seize on’ Edmund as his own (2.1.115, 118). The fact that characters as opposite as Cordelia and Edmund are alike ‘seized’ upon on account of their virtue underscores how difficult it can be to determine who and what is truly virtuous. Lear highlights this very problem when …
(Un)Orthodox Jewish Women In Latin American Visual Representation, Mirna Vohnsen, Daniela Goldfine
(Un)Orthodox Jewish Women In Latin American Visual Representation, Mirna Vohnsen, Daniela Goldfine
Articles
The 2000s was a breaking point for female Jewish representation in Latin American cinema. Previously represented in stereotypical roles, Jewish women morphed into more rounded characters in the first decade of the 21st century, showing that they had become part and parcel of the social fabric in Latin America. Films such as the Brazilian Olga (Jaime Monjardim, 2004), the Chilean-Mexican El brindis (Shai Agosin, 2007) and the Argentine La cámara oscura/Camera Obscura (María Victoria Menis, 2008), which explore Jewish Latin American culture and identity, testify to the normalization of female Jewish characters. In these films, Jewish Latin American women would …

Conservation Treatment And Technical Analysis Of A Blue & White Parian Vase, Yuyin Li
Conservation Treatment And Technical Analysis Of A Blue & White Parian Vase, Yuyin Li
Art Conservation Master's Projects
Parian ware is a type of hard-paste, biscuit porcelain first manufactured in Victorian England and later in Bennington, Vermont as well. This project studied a Parian vase with Multi-Spectral Imaging and x-ray radiography and analyzed it with x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Results suggested a potassium rich clay, a zinc rich cobalt overglaze, and an interior clear lead glaze. Conservation treatment cleaned and compensated for the losses in the vase. Library research did not identify the vase’s place of manufacture; it showed the vase has similar designs as objects in the Elizabeth McCullough …

Adults’ Reading Engagement And Wellbeing In Aotearoa New Zealand, Stephen Reder
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Education and literacy have long been associated with a range of economic and social outcomes in industrialized societies. Recent research based on large-scale national and international surveys has examined effects of education and literacy on individuals’ social and economic outcomes. This paper takes a further step in understanding the importance of literacy for individuals’ economic and social outcomes by disentangling the effects of two different aspects of literacy, literacy proficiency as measured by standardized tests and reading engagement as measured by self-reports of everyday reading activities. Using recent nationally representative survey data from New Zealand, multivariate regression models estimate the …
