Assessing The Threat Of Social Media To National Security: Information Operations In The 21st Century, Brendan M. Cullen Oct 2023

Assessing The Threat Of Social Media To National Security: Information Operations In The 21st Century, Brendan M. Cullen

Senior Theses

The ubiquity of social media has enabled an unprecedented amount of personal data to be accessible to various entities. Social media platforms leverage this data to optimize algorithmic recommendation systems, persuade users to engage, and promote monetization. The social media ecosystem’s business model demands continuous engagement and the relentless collection of user data to grow and scale. Not only is social media massively popular around the world, but it has integrated heavily into users’ daily lives. This integration is driven by social platforms’ deliberate architectures and affordances. The intentionality of social media can be exploited by state and non-state actors …

The Bereaved Songwriters' Project, Laura A. Figueroa

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to evaluate bereaved individuals’ responses to a reflective songwriting program intervention (RSPI). The purposive and convenient sample included 30 bereaved adults who were members of the teaching staff at a private, Christian, K-12 school in the southeastern United States and/or past or present members of the church with which the school was affiliated. The researcher developed a simple and succinct RSPI in which study participants were prompted to create an original musical piece using personal reflections, memories, and descriptions in song form to commemorate a deceased loved one. The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being …

Detecting Differential Rater Severity In A High-Stakes Efl Classroom Writing Assessment: A Many-Facets Rasch Measurement Approach, Apichat Khamboonruang

PASAA

Differential rater severity (DRS), one prevalent case of differential rater functioning (aka rater bias or rater interaction) effects, manifests itself when a rater assigns unusually severe or lenient ratings, threatening the validity and fairness of ratermediated assessment. Building on a many-facets Rasch measurement (MFRM) approach, this study aimed to detect whether teachers exercised DRS towards rating criteria and student subgroups (classroom, proficiency, and gender) in a high-stakes EFL classroom writing examination. Data were collected from three teachers who applied a four-point fivecriteria analytic rubric to rate opinion essays written by 42 English-major undergraduates during the examination. Main findings revealed that …

Development And Use Of Cefr Based Self-Assessment In A Thai Tertiary Context, Chatraporn Piamsai

PASAA

Self-assessment is an alternative assessment that can assess one’s language ability, and it has been widely used, especially in classroom contexts. However, recent research has suggested different results regarding the correlation between student selfassessment and language performance. The accuracy of student assessment depends on various factors and contexts. Yet, research on self-assessment has revealed great benefits of this form of assessment for students and stakeholders. The present study’s objective was to explore how Thai university students rated themselves using the developed CEFR-based self-assessment grid. It also aimed to investigate the correlation between student self-assessment and their scores on a university …

Language Assessment Literacy: Thai Efl Lecturers’ Language Assessment Knowledge, Beliefs, And Practices, Pariwat Imsa-Arda, Supong Tangkiengsirisina

PASAA

Language assessment literacy (LAL) remains an uncharted area for many English language lecturers, hindering their ability to effectively bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in language assessment within the classroom setting. This research aimed to investigate the language assessment literacy of Thai EFL university lecturers, with a focus on the reciprocal relationship between their knowledge and beliefs and their assessment practices. Employing a multistage sampling method, the study involved 152 Thai EFL university lecturers from eight public universities in Thailand. Participants completed a language assessment literacy questionnaire and assessment practice inventory. The findings indicated that the majority …

PASAA

Context has been recognized to exert a significant influence on language policy and planning (e.g., Cross, 2009; Gorsuch, 2000; Köksal & Şahin, 2012) as well as on teachers’ decisions in the field of English language teaching and assessment (e.g., Fulmer et al., 2015; Shulman & Shulman, 2004). However, research on the interface among various contextual factors seems to receive limited attention. In the hope of contributing to the literature on context-related research and understanding the current landscape of English language assessment practice in Vietnam, this paper aims to look into the interaction between the macro (i.e., nationwide English language assessment …

The Vain Explorer & Death: An Analysis Of Ecclesiastes' Philosophy, Quinn M. Gillies

Student Publications

A literary work and analysis of the philosophy of Ecclesiastes about how they viewed the world, more specifically how and how not to live one's life. It starts with a short story about an explorer who in their vanity searches the whole world for answers and comes back feeling only suffering. They are then met by a personification of death who tells them what's wrong with the way they tried to live their life and then gives the explorer the ability to live their life again with new found knowledge of the correct way to live and be without suffering. …

The Barriers To Implementation Of Artificial Intelligence In Human Resource Management, Maddy L. Filetti

Student Publications

The influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in Human Resource Management (HRM) has rapidly become a point of controversy in academic and applied settings. This review will specifically examine the most recent publications on the challenges of implementing these AI tools in the recruitment and selection functions of HR. I identify various issues brought forth by the literature related the adoption of AI-based hiring technology in organizations, including practical costs, bias, data privacy, adverse employee and manager perceptions, and validity and reliability assessment. Suggestions for addressing the concerns are also discussed – namely, the construction of inclusive algorithms, creation of …

The Five Factor Model Of Personality And Hr Employees’ Perceptions Of Ai Adoption, Maddy L. Filetti Oct 2023

The Five Factor Model Of Personality And Hr Employees’ Perceptions Of Ai Adoption, Maddy L. Filetti

Student Publications

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support Human Resources (HR) functions has recently gained influence and sparked controversy in both academic and applied settings. While studies on human-technology interaction have mainly focused on the response of humans to digital technologies in various contexts (e.g., instant messaging and social media), there remains a lack of empirical research on HR professionals’ individual perceptions of AI tools. This paper will utilize McCrae & Costa’s Big-Five Factor Model of Personality (1989) to develop five theoretical propositions about HR workers’ dispositional willingness to accept AI technology. It is proposed that while agreeableness, openness …

A Delicate Balance: Pennsylvania College In The Pennsylvania Borderlands, 1832-1860, Vivek K. Rallabandi Oct 2023

A Delicate Balance: Pennsylvania College In The Pennsylvania Borderlands, 1832-1860, Vivek K. Rallabandi

Student Publications

This paper discusses Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College) and its presence in the Pennsylvania borderlands region during the antebellum period, 1832-1860. The paper argues that Pennsylvania College's location and the "borderlands" identity of many of its students and faculty were integral to how discourse and actions surrounding slavery and abolition manifested themselves at the institution. The paper indicates that Pennsylvania College's antebellum history can serve as a microcosm of broader trends in American borderlands communities during this period. Crucially, this paper is shaped by primary source research conducting using minutes of Pennsylvania College's debating societies, the Philomathean and Phrenakosmian societies, …

Theology In Service Of An Ideology: A Polemic Against Peniel Rajkumar’S Dalit Theology And Dalit Liberation, Vivek K. Rallabandi

Student Publications

This paper examines Dalit (a marginalized group in India) Christian theology as articulated through Peniel Rajkumar's 2010 book, Dalit Theology and Dalit Liberation: Problems, Paradigms, and Possibilities. The paper criticizes Rajkumar's book, arguing that he errs in offering Christianity as the sole panacea to Dalits' spiritual ailments.

Tadaypaly Veeraragava Roy’S Gettysburg: A Reconstruction-Era Study, Vivek K. Rallabandi Oct 2023

Tadaypaly Veeraragava Roy’S Gettysburg: A Reconstruction-Era Study, Vivek K. Rallabandi

Student Publications

One of the first international students that attended Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College) was Tadaypaly Veeraragava Roy, who was a student at the college for about a semester in 1876. Roy was a student from Guntur, a prominent city in what is now the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Guntur was the center of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church's missionary operations in India, and there were many missionary schools and churches in the region. It is possible that Roy came into contact with Lutheran missionaries that may have made him aware of Pennsylvania College's existence. As one of the college's …

Hacking The Library Exhibition Designs, Karen Diaz Oct 2023

Hacking The Library Exhibition Designs, Karen Diaz

Hacking the Library

The hacker ethos in the positive sense is about the ability to deconstruct and reconstruct information systems. Hacking starts with reconceptualizing libraries. Libraries are now beyond the book. As libraries evolve into a new sort of space --still a space for research, learning and study-- but also for community engagement and collaboration, library exhibits present a unique opportunity for both collaborating exhibitors and library users. Artists engage with libraries creatively through artist residencies, installations, using discarded library materials in their work, collaborative workshops, digital collections remixing, performances and more. Hacking the Library will present artwork that highlights the intersecting values …

From Vertical To Horizontal Empowerment Of Women (In) Peace And Security: Toward A Feminist Perspective Of Human Security, Ma. Lourdes Veneracion-Rallonza Oct 2023

From Vertical To Horizontal Empowerment Of Women (In) Peace And Security: Toward A Feminist Perspective Of Human Security, Ma. Lourdes Veneracion-Rallonza

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

Human security, a people-centered approach to security, typically seeks to examine vulnerabilities and identify ways of protecting people from threats. However, people are not perennial victims—they also have agency and are capable of acting on their own. This study looks at how the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda has created both the discursive and actual spaces for women's agency, particularly in the case of women's civil society organizations (CSOs), as illustrated by their work on the ground. This chapter investigates how the Gaston Z. Ortigas Peace Institute (GZOPI), Sulong Peace, and Women Engaged in Action on United Nations Security …
