With limited space, lack of natural lighting and restrictive internal layout, children living in subdivided units and other similar small living spaces are often left with no choice but to study, play and sleep on the bed for a prolonged period. Designer's position and authority have long been challenged. However, “Design” has only recently stated responsibility for its direct impact on social structures (Escobar, 2017; Fry, 1999; Maze, 2019). Among many new “Designs”, there is an emerging decolonizing design movement in which members pursue ontological change rather than additive diversifying measures that would only uphold and sustain colonial institutions and systems. Urbanization has been a regular feature of demographic and environmental change in New Zealand for over 70 years. Urban design and development are foundational processes in this trend, accounting for population densification as well as the erosion of mature ecosystems. In Auckland, urban development has resulted in a 30% loss of green space, and continues to present significant challenges for preserving natural and cultural heritage. This pictorial uses Te Pātaka Art Trail as a case study in pluriversal design research. This pictorial paper stages the generative dialogue between a designer-researcher-teacher and a philosopher-teacher-painter in the Chinese tradition. Through cultural decentring and exchange of perspectives, we aim at questioning designers’ posture. More specifically, the polarities of “empty” and “full” are used to discuss the sense of authorship, and the balance between engagement and letting go in practice. The paintings that punctuate the text are neither used as simple illustrations nor as achievements, they constitute another type of narrative thread in our dialogue, that we hope will trigger readers’ sensitivity, reflection, and action.

6G-enabled technologies are set to become an integral part of the infrastructure within the next decade. This paper provides a speculative design-based approach to shape future technology development. We do this by leveraging current technologies to simulate future network capabilities. Specifically, we focus on how the 6G network could transform mobility in Japan. We begin with an overview of the country’s societal macro trends, the current state of technologies, and the expected novel capabilities of 6G. We report on the design and execution of a probe as an anonymous self-reporting tool to investigate the perception of mental well-being and support services for university students. The pictorial describes a six-day probe study with students. The study focuses on students’ perceptions, struggles and coping strategies to maintain their mental well-being. Our contribution is multifold. We detail the design and deployment of the probe for HCI practitioners and designers to adapt and adopt it, while we reflect on the data, deriving sensitizing concepts and personas to support the design practice for students’ mental well-being.

The emergence of hydrogen aviation technology and concepts such as regional air mobility present an opportunity to transform the air travel experience. This pictorial explores this possible future through an air travel scenario set in the context of Queensland, Australia in 2040-2050. The concept of co-performance offers a new perspective on artificial agency by understanding artifacts as capable of performing everyday practices next to people. We propose a parametric customization process that provides step-by-step instructions for end-users to personalize product shapes by adjusting pre-set parametric values. This pictorial presents the process of structuring the parametric model of eyeglass frames in Rhino Grasshopper as a case study to demonstrate the proposed process through iterative design explorations.
