Translation Alignment For Ancient Greek: Annotation Guidelines And Gold Standards, Chiara Palladino, Farnoosh Shamsian, Tariq Yousef, David J. Wright, Anise D’Orange Ferreira, Michel Ferreira Dos Reis

This paper covers three datasets containing texts in Ancient Greek, manually aligned at word level against translations in English (Grc-Eng), Portuguese (Grc-Por) and Latin (Grc-Lat). The datasets were collected by two domain experts through annotation on the Ugarit Translation Alignment Editor (https://ugarit.ialigner.com/). The quality of each dataset was measured through Inter-Annotator-Agreement (IAA) above 80%. Each dataset contains the aligned pairs and an Annotation Style Guide, and serves as a Gold Standard for translation alignment of Ancient Greek, for the evaluation of automatic translation alignment models, and as high-quality training data. This book develops the core proposition that systems theory is an attempt to construct an “exact and scientific metaphysics,” a system of general ideas central to science that can be expressed mathematically. Collectively, these ideas would constitute a non-reductionist “theory of everything” unlike what is being sought in physics. Inherently transdisciplinary, systems theory offers ideas and methods that are relevant to all of the sciences and also to professional fields such as systems engineering, public policy, business, and social work. ‘James,’ born 1951, grew up on Narragansett Avenue in the Bronx. He remembers the neighborhood as heavily Italian, with a sprinkling of Jews, Irish, and others. It was primarily small, private homes, many attached like their own. Their own neighbor expressed a dislike of living next door to Jews, directly to his parents’ faces. Yet, James grew up to become friends with the non-Jewish neighbors. He describes their own practice of Judaism as less prosperous and traditional than other parts of the Bronx.

Men’S Sheds: An Outlet For Engaging In Creative Activities, Melinda Heinz

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

This research highlights the purpose behind creating an art exhibition featuring work made by Men’s Shed members, many of whom are older adults. Publicly displaying their creative works demonstrates the creative capacities of these older men and counteracts the negative narrative that older adulthood is a time when individuals experience declining abilities. The exhibition also inspires older adults to consider what they can create, experiment with learning new mediums, and provides them an opportunity to connect with others who may share similar interests.

In my mother’s kitchen lasting bonds among family, friends, and newcomers are created. Using that space as a point of departure, I explore the significance of pedagogical places outside of classrooms that serve as flavorful ingredients for performative and participatory learning. This article articulates ways in which rituals associated with Sicilian cultural traditions are interwoven and complicit in establishing dispositions for socially engaged learning and teaching in the arts, showing how an ethic of care can transcend generations. The transition to long-term care settings can be difficult for residents and feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety are not uncommon in these environments. However, participating in therapeutic artmaking rituals creates opportunities for residents to process their feelings, experience states of flow and mindfulness, engage with others, and focus on their own psychological growth. In long-term care, the physical needs of residents are often prioritized, but psychosocial needs also require attention. International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

This article introduces the concept of ritual and the role it can play in art education across generations from PK-12 schools to community collaborations. Three authors elaborate on research, personal experiences, and applications of ritual in their art education practice. The first introduces ritual within personal, historical, cultural, psychological, and sociological contexts. Then, relates these to art education curriculum and an intergenerational community collaboration. Author 2 shares experience with ritual-based artists using performance, body adornment and modification to communicate creative sacred/secular expression. The “Rebuff Chorus” In 1960–2000 Pop Music, David Heetderks

Gamut: Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic

In some verse–prechorus–chorus (VPC) songs from 1960–1990, the prechorus sets up an expectation for tonic arrival, only to have the subsequent chorus reject this tonal implication and either withhold tonic resolution, abruptly change to a new key, or contain a passage whose relation to the previous one is tonally ambiguous. I call this event a “rebuff” chorus. Formal analysis and intertextual comparison show how rebuff choruses use absent-tonic passages or modulatory “breakout” passages in order to swerve away from the implications of the previous section. The formal device often transforms the expressive effect of the chorus from arrival and sincerity …
