Reconstructing The Kantian Ends Of Reason: Holiness Analytically Entailing Beatitude In An Eternal Highest Good, Anthony Gudwien

This dissertation argues that an eternal highest good is the final end of sensible, rational agents. This final end occurs in a noumenal world – what I have labelled World Four – that has holiness analytically entailing beatitude. However, before meritorious moral agents are incorporated into this final noumenal world, they will exist in three prior worlds. World One is our current phenomenal world where sensible, rational agents can adopt a maxim to resolutely pursue holiness. World Two, which is made possible by the immortal soul postulate, is where sensible, rational agents continue their resolute pursuit in order to become …

The Merchant And The Mathematician: Commerce And Accounting, Graziano Gentili, Luisa Simonutti, Daniele C. Struppa

In this article we describe the invention of double-entry bookkeeping (or partita doppiaas it was called in Italian), as a fertile intersection between mathematics and early commerce. We focus our attention on this seemingly simple technique that requires only minimal mathematical expertise, but whose discovery is clearly the result of a mathematical way of thinking, in order to make a conceptual point about the role of mathematics as the humus from which disciplines as different as operations research, computer science, and data science have evolved.

Ancient Loom Weights At The J. Paul Getty Museum, Marie Louise Nosch, Caroline Sauvage
Classics and Archaeology Faculty Works
The article presents a group of twenty-two mostly unpublished terracotta loom weights in the Villa collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Most have been classed as coming from the southern Italian Peninsula and are discoid or hemispherical. A functional analysis based on experimental archaeology demonstrates that these loom weights were used for weaving fine cloth. Their decoration includes dots and lines, imprints of coins, and images pressed in a mold of figures from mythology, and the iconography draws on themes from domestic life and women’s experiences. The Materiality Of Textiles And Textile Tools In The Late Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean, Caroline Sauvage

This paper examines the materiality of Late Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean (including the Aegean) textiles, fibres and textiles tools and aims to explore the relationship between people and their cloth and clothing while considering the diverse material properties of each garment and tool. It focuses on elite clothes and textiles. The article highlights the agency of matter and how the assemblage constituted by the individual elements of Late Bronze Age garments (natural fibres, imported or local dyes, colourful embellishments of beads, precious metals, and threads) acted on its environment as well as on its wearer. Educating For Good Thinking: Virtues, Skills, Or Both?, Jason Baehr

This paper explores the relationship between intellectual virtues and critical thinking, both as such and as educational ends worth pursuing. The first half of the paper examines the intersection of intellectual virtue and critical thinking. The second half addresses a recent argument to the effect that educating for intellectual virtues (in contrast to educating for critical thinking) is insufficiently action-guiding and therefore lacks a suitable pedagogy.
