“My Purpose Is To Assist”: How Chatgpt Can Push Liberal Arts Institutions To Think Critically About Themselves, Clare B. Martin

Since its release, ChatGPT, a chatbot specialized in writing content and answering questions in response to user prompts, has posed an unclear threat to liberal arts institutions. Can it serve as an effective tool for cheating? Can its responses replace work done in the liberal arts? This thesis argues that ChatGPT’s limitations—particularly its inability to think critically—prevent it from replacing real liberal arts work, which involves questioning, critique, and re-examination. If anything, this thesis suggests, ChatGPT can push liberal arts institutions to better promote critical thinking by serving as a litmus test for liberal arts-level work.

Growing up in an urban food desert can significantly affect children's development, health, and well-being (Jencks et al., 1990; Leventhal et al., 2000). Compared to their more affluent peers, youth living in low-socioeconomic urban neighborhoods are at greater risk of experiencing poor-quality diets, food insecurity, unhealthy body weights, and mental health problems (Duncan et al., 1997; Sampson et al., 1997). Moreover, children living in food-insecure households are more likely to consume calorically dense diets high in trans fat and added sugar, putting them at risk for poor health, childhood obesity, and chronic, diet-related diseases as adults (Nielsen et al., 2002). …

This thesis seeks to amplify Indigenous lifeways, diplomacies, sciences, diplomatic relations, and the power of storytelling. This is not a piece analyzing Indigenous culture. Rather, this thesis returns the gaze to the settler colonial state, specifically its storytelling ideologies, to show that systemic practices of inequity in storytelling can be disrupted and decolonized through a recentering of Indigenous ideologies. This study examines Indonesia’s reliance and independence on foreign direct investment (FDI) and multinational corporations (MNCs) in the oil and gas sector. Analyzing historical, economic, and political primary and secondary sources and conducting qualitative interviews, the research explores the friction between economic development aspirations and nationalist sentiments. The study reveals that the current ambiguity surrounding FDI and MNC policies in Indonesia’s oil and gas sector can be traced back to the country’s economic decolonization and demonstrates that Indonesia’s economic policies towards these factors shifted in the aftermath of political change. This paper aims to bridge the gap between the plebiscites following the First World War and the referendums of the Third Reich. To this point, the literatures on these sets of votes have remained completely separate. No scholars have considered the NSDAP’s votes in the context of the postwar votes. By comparing and contrasting these groups of plebiscites for the first time, this paper will shed light on the democratic backsliding of interwar Germany.

Using historian Benedict Anderson's framework from his seminal text Imagined Communities of examining nation-building and identity construction through colonial artifacts, this thesis turns to maps, censuses, and museums to better understand the colonial and post-colonial imagining of the country that is now known as Malaysia. Reconciling with regional histories that predate the nation-state and defy the contemporary boundaries of territoriality, this thesis largely seeks to elucidate the contestation between colonially-imposed ideas of spatiality, categorization, and the reproduction of history with the modern Malaysian nation-state and the conflation of ethnicity with nationalism from which much of this contestation is derived from.

This paper attempts to explain the significance of Jewish presence in the Venetian Empire in the context of the myth of Venice. Jews were officially permitted to settle in Venice in 1516, but their connection with the Venetian Empire goes further back. Choosing to focus on authors such as Jane Austen, Frances Burney, John Cleland, and Samuel Richardson, I aim to see if gender of the author matters in giving a realistic portrayal of eighteenth century British female protagonists, and if there actually is a difference depending on that gender (male or female, specifically). ในปรัชญาพุทธมีหลักการที่เมื่อนำมาพิจารณาร่วมกันแล้วมีความขัดแย้งกันคือหลักการเรื่องอนัตตาและกรรม ความขัดแย้งของหลักการทั้งสองนี้อยู่ตรงที่หลักการเรื่องอนัตตาไม่ยอมรับอัตตาที่เป็นเจ้าของของการกระทำ แต่ในทางกลับกัน หลักการเรื่องกรรมได้เสนอว่ากรรมที่ได้กระทำไปแล้วย่อมมีผลตามมาเสมอโดยกรรมดังกล่าวนี้ย่อมส่งผลแก่ผู้ที่ได้กระทำกรรมนั้นเองซึ่งมีนัยยะถึงอัตตาที่เป็นเจ้าของการกระทำนั้น วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เป็นการวิเคราะห์แนวคิดของนาคารชุนผู้ก่อตั้งสำนักปรัชญามาธยมิกะ เพื่อหาคำตอบว่าในระบบปรัชญาดังกล่าวนี้มีองค์ประกอบที่สามารถพัฒนาเป็นแนวคิดเรื่องเจตจำนงเสรีได้หรือไม่ โดยมีเป้าประสงค์เพื่อนำแนวคิดเรื่องเจตจำนงเสรีมาช่วยในการอธิบายถึงความไม่เข้ากันของหลักการอนัตตาและกรรมที่ขัดแย้งกันในเรื่องอัตตาของมนุษย์ วิทยานิพนธ์เล่มนี้เสนอว่าในปรัชญามัธยมกะมีองค์ประกอบเรื่องเจตจำนงเสรีมากมาย ทั้งเรื่องเจตนา ผู้กระทำ ความเป็นนิยัตินิยม เจตนานั้นมีอำนาจในการสร้างผลและมีนัยยะของการเลือกอยู่ อีกทั้งแนวคิดเรื่องผู้กระทำนั้นยังสามารถเป็นเจ้าของการกระทำของตนเองได้โดยไม่ต้องใช้แนวคิดเรื่องอัตตามาประกอบ เนื่องจากทั้งสองอย่างนั้นอิงอาศัยกัน ทั้งหมดสามารถนำมาสร้างเป็นหลักการเรื่องเจตจำนงเสรีแบบเข้ากันได้กับนิยัตินิยม(compatibilism) อีกทั้งแนวคิดเรื่องเจตจำนงเสรีดังกล่าวยังสามารถช่วยอธิบายและเติมเต็มส่วนที่ไม่เข้ากันระหว่างอนัตตาและกรรมได้บนฐานของความเป็นเจ้าของการกระทำที่ไม่อ้างอิงถึงอัตตา

งานวิจัยนี้เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อหาแนวคิดอารมณ์ขันที่เหมาะสมกับเรขศิลป์เคลื่อนไหวในสื่อการเรียนรู้ในกลุ่มวิชาศิลปะและการออกแบบที่เหมาะสมในระดับอุดมศึกษา และ 2) เพื่อประยุกต์ใช้แนวคิดอารมณ์ขันในการออกแบบเรขศิลป์เคลื่อนไหวสื่อการเรียนรู้ในกลุ่มวิชาศิลปะและการออกแบบที่เหมาะสมในระดับอุดมศึกษา โดยมีวิธีการดำเนินงานวิจัยคือ ผู้วิจัยใช้กลุ่มตัวอย่างสื่อเรขศิลป์เคลื่อนไหว (Motion Graphic) ซึ่งเป็นผลงานปฏิบัติที่เป็นเลิศ (Best Practice) จากแพลตฟอร์ม TED-Ed จากเว็บไซด์ https://ed.ted.com/ (TED-Ed., n.d.) ใน 2 หมวดหมู่คือหมวดหมู่ศิลปะ (Visual Arts) และหมวดหมู่การออกแบบ (Design) รวม 187 เรื่อง เก็บข้อมูลกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญชุดที่ 1 และ 2 ด้วยวิธีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก และเก็บข้อมูลกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญชุดที่ 3 ด้วยวิธีเดลฟาย (Delphi) ผลงานวิจัยพบว่า แนวคิดอารมณ์ขันที่เหมาะสมกับเรขศิลป์เคลื่อนไหวในสื่อการเรียนรู้ในกลุ่มวิชาศิลปะและการออกแบบที่เหมาะสมในระดับอุดมศึกษา มากที่สุดคือ 1) การแต่งกายแปลกประหลาด 2) การทำให้เกินจริงและเป็นเรื่องเหลวไหล และ 3) การล้อเลียน ส่วนการประยุกต์ใช้แนวคิดอารมณ์ขัน​พบว่าสามารถใช้ทฤษฎีการเล่าเรื่อง​ (Narrative Theory) ส่วนโครงเรื่อง​ (Plot) ตัวละคร​ (Character) และสัญลักษณ์ (Symbol) โดยอารมณ์ขันที่​ใช้ใน​โครงเรื่อง​คือ​ 1) การแต่งกายแปลกประหลาด​ 2) การทำให้เป็น​เรื่องเกินจริงและเป็นเรื่องเหลวไหล 3) การล้อเลียน​ 4) การเล่นเลอะเทอะแตกหักทำลายและทำให้เจ็บตัว 5)การหักมุมและพลิกความคาดหมาย 6) การเสียดสี และ​7) การทำให้เป็นเรื่องเพศและเรื่องสัปดน​ อารมณ์ขันที่ใช้ในตัวละคร​ คือ​ 1) การแต่งกายแปลกประหลาด 2) การล้อเลียน​ และ​ 3) ​การทำให้เป็นเรื่องเพศและเรื่องสัปดน ส่วนอารมณ์ขันที่ใช้ในสัญลักษณ์​ คือ​ 1) การใช้ตรรกวิทยาผิดๆ และ​ 2) การทำให้เกินจริงหรือเป็นเรื่องเหลวไหล

การขับร้องชุดเพลงร้องศิลป์ที่มีคุณค่าของ ฟรานซ์ ชูเบิร์ต กาบริเอล โฟเรและราล์ฟ วอน วิลเลียมส์ และการสร้างสรรค์ชุดเพลงร้องศิลป์ "นิราศทำนองธาร" สำหรับนักร้องเสียงโซปราโนและวงเชมเบอร์ ที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากสายน้ำที่ไหลล่องไปตามสถานที่ต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งชีวิตและประสบการณ์ในช่วงเวลาที่ต่างกันของผู้วิจัย ประกอบด้วยเพลงร้องภาษาไทยจำนวน 9 บท เนื้อร้องคัดจากบทกวีร่วมสมัยของก้องภพ รื่นศิริ และประทวน อารีรอบ ผู้เป็นบิดา ที่มีความสละสลวยของภาษาและทรงคุณค่าทางวรรณกรรม และมีเนื้อหาสอดคล้องและเหมาะสมในการประพันธ์ชุดเพลงร้องศิลป์ ในส่วนของดนตรี ผู้วิจัยประพันธ์ร่วมกับ ดร.วานิช โปตะวนิช ตามแบบแผนของดนตรีคลาสสิกที่ผ่านกระบวนการวิจัยอย่างเป็นระบบ
