I am a junior at Roger Williams University studying Forensic Science with a minor in Creative Writing. I grew up in a small town on the East Coast sailing and playing tennis during the summers. My dream has always been to publish my own book, and recently I got involved in writing more poetry, and have added to that dream of someday getting my poems published as well.

Student Self-Diagnostics: Engaging Students As Co-Respondents To Their Own Writing, Robert M. Rowan

Journal of Response to Writing

Student self-analysis and reflective work can be useful components of the writing classroom. This article examines a student self-diagnostic tool, developed by the author, which can elicit closer attention paid to the student’s own writing, analysis, and research processes and to other desirable outcomes the teacher’s learning plan may be pursuing. This tool, the Genre Understanding Sheet or GUS, has been successfully deployed in a variety of writing courses such as introductory composition, business and professional writing, and technical communication. The article examines the GUS and its development and rationale, reviews the underlying science and theory-work which inform its design, …

Mineral-Specific Issues In 3d Scanning And Printing For Digital Collections, Outreach And Display, Selby Hearth, Bronwen Densmore

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Three-dimensional (3D) scanning and 3D printing of natural history specimens presents interesting opportunities for informal and formal science education, as well as specimen preservation and display. Museum staff in several museums have begun scanning and making specimens available online. However, very few mineral specimens are available as scanned 3D objects, because minerals present unique challenges in scanning. Specifically, their variable surface reflection properties (“luster”) and surface complexities make them complicated specimens to reproduce. This paper examines the variables involved in 3D scanning and 3D printing mineral specimens, lays out criteria for ideal candidates, and presents workarounds to common problems. In …

Dire Le Monde : Le Corps Et Ses Écologies Dans Guelwaar D’Ousmane Sembène, Abdoulaye Sall Jan 2023

Dire Le Monde : Le Corps Et Ses Écologies Dans Guelwaar D’Ousmane Sembène, Abdoulaye Sall

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article focuses on corporality as a focus of meaning in Guelwaar of Ousmane Sembène and, above all, on its multiple relationships with its different ecologies: textual, social, etc. We study, successively, the metamorphosis that is taking place in African societies through the naked body, emaciated or used in a subversive form and the caricature of the political power that we can see in the representation of elongate body, voluminous or profane.

Ousmane Sembène : Une Esthétique Du Diiso, Mbaye Diouf Jan 2023

Ousmane Sembène : Une Esthétique Du Diiso, Mbaye Diouf

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The representation of public speech continues to determine two major components of African text and film, that is, the dialogical and the narrative. As a site of relational negotiations, reminders of the doxa and ceremonial practices, this public word is formulated and refined in instances of verbal performance such as consultation (diiso), panegyric (tagg), farce (foh) or tirade (xas). For an author such as Ousmane Sembène, the elaboration of the text (Le dernier de l’Empire) and of the film (Guelwaar) constitutes a moment of aestheticization of the diiso …

Chains Shall He Break: A Vision For Reconciling Worship, Kyle Joseph Harmon Jan 2023

Chains Shall He Break: A Vision For Reconciling Worship, Kyle Joseph Harmon

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

In the Evangelical church, there is a disparity between the worship of the church and a lack of care for the marginalized and oppressed in American society. Though their worship proclaims freedom, chains being broken, and captives set free, the church does little to advocate for the actual poor and disenfranchised. Because of these and other reasons, the American evangelical church has come to resemble something other than both its heritage and the Body of Christ described in Scripture. Instead, it has become a cloistered, segregated, echo chamber for those who agree on orthodoxy to retreat into and sense the …

Seeing The Unseen: Bridging Realities Of Experience Through Dependent Origination, Shubham Sapkota Jan 2023

Seeing The Unseen: Bridging Realities Of Experience Through Dependent Origination, Shubham Sapkota

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Overall, this project looks into the problem and history of colonialism, the impact of it on the people and knowledge coming from South Asia, and offers an alternate view to understand our world. The notion of seeing the unseen acknowledges that there are facets of our day-to-day reality that we are often unaware of when thinking about our communities and ourselves. Yet, being able to fully acknowledge and understand the seen and unseen aspects of our community is necessary if we are to work towards improving our communities for the long run. By relying on the Buddhist teaching and discourse …

The Creative Process—A Study Of Influence In Poetry Through Ocean Vuong And Ross Gay, Katie Hallock Jan 2023

The Creative Process—A Study Of Influence In Poetry Through Ocean Vuong And Ross Gay, Katie Hallock

Student Research

In this work, I attempt to document the creative process as it relates to itself: the inspiration and the interpretation changing each other. Poetry expresses a relation of the self to the world, and so it is both outlet and introspection. Being fascinated by this connection of inner and external, I hope this commentary and creation project will show the interdependency of the two. Poetry is a unique process; it is necessarily vulnerable and honest, connecting the writer and reader to the external world in a way that prose would find difficult to articulate.

Rosalie Edge And The Modern Environmental Movement, Elizabeth Claire Coleman Jan 2023

Rosalie Edge And The Modern Environmental Movement, Elizabeth Claire Coleman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This thesis examines and follows the actions of an understudied activist in the environmentalist movement: Rosalie Edge. This thesis relies and encourages a combination of conservation, environmentalism, and historical women’s history in America. Rosalie Edge’s work as an environmentalist created a new and effective way for environmentalists to advocate for the environment around them. She created a pamphlet medium that invited scientists and other conservationists to publish writings and opinions that went against what the Audubon Society, the Biological Survey, and legislators were doing and publishing. The research for this project combines analysis from other professionals in the field with …

Perception Vs. Reality: The Influence Of Civic Experiences In High School On Adult Civic Engagement, Kaya Bottmeyer Jan 2023

Perception Vs. Reality: The Influence Of Civic Experiences In High School On Adult Civic Engagement, Kaya Bottmeyer

Political Science & International Studies | Senior Theses

Research on political socialization has shown that individuals’ families and education play a significant role in their later political actions and attitudes, but more needs to be understood on how large the role of education is and, specifically, what impact secondary education has on people’s political socialization. Literature suggests that educational standards that require more civics or social science courses are more effective in creating civically engaged individuals, and curriculums that employ service learning and experiential learning techniques are even more effective at increasing civic engagement, but to what extent does a person's perception of their educational experience factor into …
