Nearly all content in this collection comes from microfilm of the Bridgewater Independent, covering the years from approximately 1880 to 1925. Dr. Spence spent ten years printing out pages from the microfilm, cutting the content into individual articles, and putting them onto index cards filed by subject. He included hand-written notes and dates on the cards. His research focusing on the years represented by the collection resulted in a collection of ten written works on this time period, referenced together as, Bridgewater, Massachusetts: A Town in Transition. Links to the digital files of these works can be found …

Blagoveshchensk Massacre And Beyond: The Landscape Of Violence In The Amur Province In The Spring And Summer Of 1900, Sergey Glebov

History: Faculty Books

In the early 1930s, both coastal and offshore Japanese fisheries in Kamchatka caused strong tensions between Japan and Soviet authorities. Japanese salmon fishery companies then turned their attention to the East Bering Sea near Alaska. The Japanese government operated its experimental salmon fishery in the international waters of Bristol Bay in Alaska in 1936–1937. The operation immediately triggered massive protests from the US side. Even though the Japanese government was seriously concerned about the situation, Japan could not step back easily, as a compromise with the USA would weaken Japan’s position in its negotiations on a new fishery treaty with …

Cosplay refers to the fan practice of costuming and (often) playacting characters from media. Cosplays can be derived from a spectrum of fan-oriented media franchises including comics, live-action television, cartoons, and more. Matthew Hale (2014, 6) argues that cosplay is less represented in fan studies because cosplay’s embodied and performative nature did not seem to lend itself to the postmodern, intertextual readings that characterized early fan studies. However, as outlined by Paul Mountfort, Anne Peirson-Smith, and Adam Geczy (2018, 24), “Cosplay’s particular form of détournement is a ‘recontextualization’ of sources which aligns it with other mixing and mashing practices, such …

Finding The Middle Zone; Redefining Spirituality Through Contemporary American Literature, Mickey Mcpoland Jan 2023

Finding The Middle Zone; Redefining Spirituality Through Contemporary American Literature, Mickey Mcpoland

Master's Theses

In this essay, I investigate the intersection of post-postmodern literature and postsecular thought. I examine Jonathan Franzen’s novel Crossroads (2022) as a means to examine a religious conception of goodness and how goodness becomes rooted in what we worship. I also look to Infinite Jest and “Good People” by David Foster Wallace. The latter illuminates the conflict between traditional forms of worship and contemporary calls to worship one’s own desires, which results in stagnation, frigidity, and indecisiveness. Characters follow their internal compass, which leads them only further away from a sense of stability. Franzen’s work shows what replaces traditional religious …

Anise’s favorite poisonous plants were delphinium, oleander, and lily of the valley. Especially lily of the valley, which she’d wanted in her wedding bouquet even before she knew the flowers could put a man into cardiac arrest. After she learned that tidbit, it had sounded even more appropriate for a wedding. A flower that could literally make your heart skip a beat? Not to mention the wicked play on “till death do you part.” She didn’t tell anyone about this joke after it had gone over poorly with her sister, who had always been, Anise thought, a little too sensitive …

It’s August, and I am thinking of old friends. I count the house numbers, my shoulders sweating under the guitar case strapped to my back. Even in this Minnesotan neighborhood, which tries very hard to be an antithesis of the South, the wet air steers my thoughts to Nashville.

Something happened when he recommended Anna Karenina. They were sitting on her grandmother’s rickety porch swing one evening in May. Fields of corn and alfalfa stretched out before them in the gold light like a frayed heirloom quilt. She was leaning her head back, waaaay back craning it till it hurt—because she was trying to watch a little spider who was fastening its nylon web to the board-and-baton behind the swing.

A place within my memory, an intersection. A minivan full of dreams, desires. Frozen by red light. Knock, knock, knock-ity, knock. The sky cracked, hail shards cackling against metal and pavement. I’m a passenger, a child strapped in the back, ignorant of destination or direction.

have an extra tear duct. You can see the little hole in my face, like a pin prick, just below its working counterpart. Every time I show someone they ask if it works. I feel a little reluctant to tell them, “No. It doesn’t work.” I don’t know if it ever has. I believe it never did, but I know it doesn’t work now. They say “huh,” as if my extra nonfunctioning body part has just disappointed them. I don’t like to dwell on that.
