(Im-)Plausible Classroom Communities: World Language Learners‘ Perceived Accuracy Of Stereotypical Attributions To Teachers Of German, Lucian Rothe
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Grounded in self-based and community-oriented concepts of motivation research into learning world languages, this study investigated stereotypes about native-speaker and non-native speaker teachers of German that 110 novice learners of French, German, Russian, and Spanish had encountered. It furthermore analyzed how participants rated the accuracy of the described stereotypes. With the goal to explore whether stereotypical attributions to teachers of German speak to Chavez’s (2021) concept of the plausible foreign-language self, the study examined how clichés about instructors and their perceived accuracy differ between learners and non-learners of German. Statistical analyses showed students’ awareness of stereotypes about teachers of another …

Have Underground Radiation Measurements Refuted The Orch Or Theory?: Comment On “At The Crossroad Of The Search For Spontaneous Radiation And The Orch Or Consciousness Theory”, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
"In [1] it is claimed that, based on radiation emission measurements described in [2], a certain 'variant' of the Orch OR theory has been refuted. I agree with this claim. However, the significance of this result for Orch OR per se is unclear. After all, the refuted 'variant' was never advocated by anyone, and it contradicts the views of Hameroff and Penrose (hereafter: HP) who invented Orch OR [3].
My aim is to get clear on this situation. I argue that it is indeed reasonable to speak of 'variants' here. Orch OR is not a complete model of reality but …
How Understanding History Through Historical Fiction Affects Gender Relations, Samantha Eastman
How Understanding History Through Historical Fiction Affects Gender Relations, Samantha Eastman
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
In supporting how understanding history through historical fiction affects gender relations, it is important to look at not only the studied value of historical teaching but also the history itself. The history of women, particularly women of color and other marginalized groups, is often neglected in the Public Education system globally. In higher-level education, educational gaps are not always addressed. Understanding what led to the core values popularly held in society today can simultaneously allow us to reevaluate them. This thesis examines three major periods in US history where women were negatively affected by the standards and beliefs of the …

The “Heaven Ab Initio” Argument From Evil, Carlo Alvaro
The “Heaven Ab Initio” Argument From Evil, Carlo Alvaro
Publications and Research
Logical and evidential arguments from evil are generally thought to have been rebutted by various refutations, defenses, and theodicies. While disparate, these responses employ similar strategies to show that God has morally sufficient reasons to permit evil and suffering in the world, either to preserve human freedom, for the sake of the moral growth of human souls, or to train humans to be able to act freely without sinning once in heaven. In this paper, I defend the heaven ab initio argument from evil (HAIAFE), which demonstrates that God could have accomplished all these goals, without the need for evil …

Between Heaven And Earth! A Poem-Collage Pair About Hypatia Of Alexandria, Sarah Glaz, Mark Sanders
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
The poem-collage pair presented here is a work of collaboration between the mathematician and poet, Sarah Glaz, and the collage and ceramic artist, Mark Sanders. The piece is part of their larger joint poem-collage project involving the history of mathematics. Included as background is a brief discussion on the history and mathematics involved, and a reflection on several landmark locations and some of the relevant imagery appearing in the poem and the collage.

Astor Place Barber, Audrey Nasar
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
"Astor Place Barber" is a short story about a math professor and a barber. It plays with the logical concept of a paradox via the Barber's Paradox, which, made famous by Bertrand Russell, tells the story of a barber who both shaves himself and does not shave himself.
Locked In Functions: A Short Poem For Robert Langlands, Virgilio A. Rivas
Locked In Functions: A Short Poem For Robert Langlands, Virgilio A. Rivas
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This short poem is inspired by Robert Langlands, recipient of the 2018 Abel Prize. The poem tries to sum up in poetic language, as brief but substantial as it can be, the philosophical and rhetorical connotation of his contributions to mathematics, from automorphic forms to number theory, and the famous Langlands programme, among others. Also partly inspired by Edward Frenkel's tribute to Langlands, the book Love and Mathematics, the poem seeks to capture the philosophical beauty of mathematics that privileges the importance of 'functions' over 'passions', consistent with Langlands' purely mathematical side.
