Understanding The Roles Of Images And Intermodal Relationships For Optimized Use Of Visual And Verbal Resources In Vietnam’S Textbooks For Lower Secondary Levels, Yusnita Febrianti, Thao Vu
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
The study investigates the roles of images and intermodal relationships of both language and images in two English textbooks used in Vietnamese lower secondary schools, namely Tieng Anh and Solutions textbooks to gain insights on the ways to optimise the use of both language and images as resources in teaching and learning activities. Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (1996, 2006) framework on the grammar of visual design is used to analyse the images, looking at the types of image representations and the compositional meanings. The language-image relationships in the books, on the other hand, are analysed using the framework of Intermodal …

Exploring Batik Semarangan As A Medium To Develop Intercultural Communication Awareness And Global Competence, Ekawati Marhaenny Dukut
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
People doing work from home are mostly depending on what the internet has to offer for communication. Because people want to make good use of the Internet for communication, such information is available in English as a global language. One of the advantages of having ready information in English is that local cultural products can now have better chances to compete globally with products from other cultures. One of those products is Indonesia’s Batik Semarangan, which is produced in Semarang, the capital city of Central Java. Through studying the motifs found in Batik Semarangan, an intercultural communication awareness of rich …

Reimagining Singapore In Verse: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Contemporary Poetry And Its Role In Emerging National Identity, Benjamin Baguio Mangila
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This paper critically examines how contemporary Singaporean writers use language in verse, that is poetry, to make vivid representations of Singapore as a nation and discursively construct the social notion of the country's national identity. Utilizing Wodak's (2001) Discourse-Historical framework, this paper reveals how the two authors use some common discursive strategies, mainly representational and predicational, in making explicit representations of Singapore and creating a strong sense of national identity. In their poetry, authors frequently utilize referential linguistic devices such as first personal pronouns to attach specific human traits that help personify Singapore and express an in-group identity that functions …

This study aims to describe the lexical semantic fields of reading textbooks in Universitas Negeri Malang, specifically in categories being, cosmic, energetic, substantial, terrestrial, objective, living, animate, and human. It used a descriptive qualitative method with a semantic analysis approach. The semantic approach was selected since we intended to comprehend the semantic phenomenon from the lexical-semantic field aspect of a specific textbook course. In detail, we started the research by describing the lexical-semantic field in the textbook and classified the words and phrases. Further, we identified the rational understanding of those words and phrases as a complete understanding of a …

Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Webinar Recordings and Conversations
To continue our conversation and readiness in this critical time for higher education, the following questions are kept in mind: If the Supreme Court does away with race in admissions in colleges and universities around the nation, what does this decision mean for Pacific? And, how do we collectively center anti-racism in our all efforts?
Join me for the final installment of: Equity-minded leadership in a post affirmative action environment on Tuesday, February 28 from 12-1pm on the Stockton campus (in the X-space, first floor of the library across from the Cube, and on Zoom).

How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast
In this final episode, we will first listen to the “Song of Suffering Calamity” by the woman poet and scholar Wang Duanshu (1621-ca. 1680), narrating her flight from the invading Qing army during the Ming-Qing transition. We will conclude with two examples by women among the many poems in the Ming and Qing that record quotidian pleasures and reflections on daily life. Whether pain and loss or pleasure and joy, men and women in late imperial China inscribed their emotions and thoughts in poetry.

Home – No Home: Expatriation, Social Integration And Remote Viewing Of Place. An Expanded Photography Approach, Ioannis Galanopoulos-Papavasileiou
All Works
Home – No Home reflects through expanded photographic artworks and elucidate – through heuristic introspection, auto-ethnography, and critical text analysis – notions of expatriation and social integration, such as home, (Blunt & Dowling 2006; Blunt et al., 2007) home displacement and attachment, nostalgia (Vidler, 1992; Koerner, 2017) and homesickness (Fink et al., 2007). Attached to these concepts are deeper questions rooted in societal discourses about today’s global trends and discourses of expatriation, (Fechter, 2007; Leonard 2010; Walsh, 2010, 2012, 2014; Mathur, 2011; and Kunz, 2016) and the politics of border assertion and control.
